INTERVIEWING A REPORTER / NEWSPAPER OWNER
by Alexia A. (6th grade)

On Wednesday 4th November we, the 6th graders, visited the office where the local newspaper “Ο ΛΑΟΣ ΤΟΥ ΑΛΜΥΡΟΥ” is prepared. We saw there the room where the reporters work and, on the same day, Mr. Tsintsinis, the owner of the newspaper, came to our school and we asked him some questions.

First of all, we asked Mr. Tsintsinis some things about the newspaper. We found out that the newspaper was founded eleven years ago. He also told us that an article can take from 30 minutes to one day to be edited. In addition, we got the information that in this newspaper there are four important categories of professionals working for it: the reporters, the technicians, the secretary and the marketing manager. Moreover, we were told that, for the newspaper to be printed, all the articles are ready from the previous day. Finally, when we asked him which article he considers to be most successful, or influential among those he has written, he told us that he thinks that his article about contaminated water consumption in Almyros was one that was discussed a lot, he received a lot of criticism about it and he was even led to trial for it, only to be acquitted afterwards.

We are really grateful to Mr. Tsintsinis for the opportunity he gave us to get to know more about how a newspaper is created and what the job of a reporter is all about (see also the article in Greek for extra information on the interview).

1st Primary School of Almyros – November Issue – Μάζεμα Σκουπιδιών

Τhe Municipality of Lamia has founded the “Folklore Museum” of Fthiotida, in 1984. The “Women’s Society for the Improvement of the En¬vironment and Culture” of Lamia, insistent in that direction, in order to create an organization, that would collect, catego¬rize, restore, conserve and exhibit the materialistic ev¬idence of the traditional civilization of Lamia and Fthi¬otida in general. The Municipality of Lamia assisted this effort of individuals and as a result the Folklore Muse¬um was founded.

Nowadays the museum is housed in a newly built, four-storied building, financed by the municipality of Lamia in Kaliva – Bakogianni pedestrian road that leads to the historical “Laou” square. The exhibits (arts and crafts productions, rural fife and stockbreeding, costumes, jewelry, weaving, housing e.t.c.) are dis¬played on the first and second floor of the building. 1300 items are exhibited in the museum which come from donations by citizens of the region. We are deeply indebted to those people since it was due to them that a great part of our tradition has been con¬served.

The 3rd floor of the building houses a conference room and a small library with folklore and historic books. Our effort of making known the folklore culture of the region led us to the publication of several books that are available in the museum. The books are “Tra¬ditional Recipes of Roumeli”, “Folklore of Fthiotida” and “Greek traditional tastes in Lamia”.

1st Primary School of Almyros – November Issue – Swine Flu

swine-flu.jpg
SWINE FLU
by Jim M. (6th grade)

Everybody talks about the new virus. How dangerous is it and how can we protect ourselves? The pathologist, Dr Nikolaos Sarris, was kind enough to answer some questions and give us some information.

The virus began in the U.S.A. Many cases appeared in Mexico, too. The first cases in Europe were in England, France and Spain. The virus infects people through the air with drops from our breath, mouth and hands. There is a variety of symptoms that are very gentle, like temperature, cough, or vomit and diarrhea, but sometimes our breathing system gets worse and this may lead to death. We can cure the signs of illness, but we cannot cure the virus at all, because the antivirus we know today cannot solve the problem.

Because of this, we must take prevention measures by taking care of our health or being injected with the vaccine for virus H1N1. This way, the existence of the virus will become less. Some doctors prefer the vaccine, while others do not.

In Greece, deaths are not so many. We have got about 10 cases that passed away, but we do not know how things will be pretty soon. In Magnesia, and particularly in Almyros, there are only few people who have had the flu, but, luckily, all of them have got over it now.

We would like to thank Dr Nikolaos Sarris for his time and the information he gave us.

MY COUNTRY
by Alexia A. (6th grade)

My name is Alexia and I am 12 years old. I live in Greece, a beautiful country. Greece borders with Albania, Bulgaria, FYROM, Turkey and Italy.

Greece has mainly got mountains and plains, but actually its beauty comes from the many seas we have.

The weather is cold and it often rains in winter, but in summer the sun shines.

In Greece there aren’t only Greeks. There are also people from other countries. Almost half of the foreign people are of Bulgarian or Albanian origin.

I don’t think Greece is the best country of all, but it is my country and I love it!

FUTURE SCHOOLS
by Chris P. (6th grade)

I think schools in the future will be fantastic! Why do I think that? Because we all see that technology moves forward.

Schools in the future will have computers and children will have computers, too. They will probably not have a board to write on. Maybe there will not be human teachers, because there will be robot teachers that will teach the subjects in a very simple way. All children will have a robot and, when a child is ill, a robot will go to his/her house. The students will eat in school and do their homework there. There will also be a flying bus to take the children from home and return them from school.

I hope schools in the future will be fantastic, very good and funny!

LET’S DANCE!
by Effie T. & Georgia S. (6th grade)

Here, in Almyros, there is a dance teacher, Mrs. Ritsa Karanika, who teaches modern hip – hop, oriental, latin, tango, jive, cha – cha to like who like dancing. She was kind enough to answer to some questions about dancing.

First of all, we asked her what she thinks dancing offers to children and she answered that it offers a beautiful and worked-up body and maybe for some children an opportunity to have a good job. Then, we asked her how she has decided to set up her dance school and she answered that, when she was young, she loved this job and she chose to do this professionally.
Our next question was for how many years she has been teaching dancing and she said to us that she has been doing it for 8 years. We also wanted to know why she likes dancing and she informed us that it combines both gymnastics and fun!
After that, we asked her how many performances she has organized and in how many of them she has participated and she told us that she has organized 16 performances and participated in 12 of them. In the end, our last question was about the cities where she teaches dancing and she said that she teaches dancing in Thessaloniki, Athens, Zagora, Stefanovikio, Risomilos, Almyros and Volos.

We would like to thank her for her time and the information she gave us. We advise you to go to this dance school because it is fantastic! We love our teacher very much, because she is a very kind and good teacher. This dance school is at the place where KTEL used to be in Almyros and its name is “Magic Steps”. It is suitable for all ages and – in our opinion – Mrs Karanika teaches in the best possible way!

BEAUTIFUL DESTINATIONS
by George K. & Jim M. (6th grade)

A place we recommend for visiting is the Atomium in Brussels, Belgium.

You can visit the Atomium, a unique building, as you can see in the picture. It was ready in 1958 and the man who made it is André Waterkeyn. He wanted to represent the nine atoms of iron crystal and he wanted his building to be the highest in the area. Its height is 110m.

Atomium is the symbol of Brussels with a magic view from the top sphere. In general, Belgium is a beautiful country and we suggest you visit it some time in the future!

A DAY IN MY LIFE
by Maria E (5th Grade)

My name is Maria Ekizoglou. I am 10 years old and I go to the fifth class of Primary School. I get up at 7 o’clock because I have to go to school. I eat my breakfast. Then, I wear my clothes and my shoes. I brush my teeth and make my hair. Then, I go to school.

At school, we learn Maths, Language, Geography, Physical Education, History, Music, English, German and Physics. School starts at 8:15 and ends at 1:30 or 1:55. In school we have six teachers.

Then, I get home from school and I do my homework. I eat my lunch and I study for my English and German afternoon lessons. Then, I go to my English school and after that I go to my German school. After that, I get home and play with my friends. Then, I go to the ballet school. I like dancing very much.

Before I go to bed I watch TV and I eat my dinner. There are many programs on TV but my favourite is the “X-Factor”. I go to bed at ten o’clock because it’s time to sleep.
