Bonds of friendship between Germany and Greece due to a European project

Thirteen students from 2nd General Lyceum of Aliveri, Evia traveled from 03 to 09 of November  2019 to Ibbenbüren, in North Rhine-Westphalia, Germany and were hosted by German families.

Common element is that the towns of both schools, Ibbenbüren and Aliveri, are industrial towns and in the past there were coal mines in the area, which have been closed down, and today Gas Plants operates respectively.

Industrial landscape in Aliveri

Students participated in joint activities with their partners at Berufskolleg School, Tecklenburger Land, like the theatre workshop on cultural diversity “Changing identities in industrial areas – challenges not problems”.

Outside school they had the opportunity to get to know the relevant to the project sights of the area.

Starting in Essen a group was guided to the Zeche Zollverein, which was included on the UNESCO World Heritage List on December 14, 2001. Zeche Zollverein and the Coke Factory (erected in 1957-1961, closed June 30, 1993), was among the largest in Europe. Well 12, built with New Objectivity style, opened in 1932 and is regarded as an architectural and technical masterpiece, perhaps “the most beautiful coal mine in the world”.

Another group was guided to the Ruhr Museum, housed in Zeche Zollverein, in the permanent exhibition of over 6,000 exhibits which presents the fascinating history of one of the largest industrial sites in the world since its formation of carbon, 300 million years ago, until the current structural changes to the Cathedral of Ruhr.

They were also guided to the German Energy Company (RAG) apprenticeship site in Ibbenbüren, where they were presented the ambitious Urban Development Plan for the Ibbenbüren coal area in collaboration with RAG Anthrazit Ibbenbüren GmbH, following the final closure of the coal industry. Scale consisting of politicians, administrators and business experts, working in partnership with citizens, is looking for new ways to develop the area with transparency and an intensive dialogue among residents that have lost their jobs to stay in the region and work there.

The visit to Augustaschacht, to the neighboring town of Osnabrück, which was originally a mine for ore production, was very touching. In Augustaschacht, early 1944, the Osnabruck Gestapo set up a labor training camp, which served mainly as a “punishment for minors”, workers’ who had become ‘visible’ (since their confinement there, as a result of kidnapping by the German occupation troops, was surrounded by total secrecy). It was one of the 100 AEL or AZL camps operated by the Gestapo between 1940 and 1945. The renovated place, opened in January 27, 1998, hosts a permanent exhibition on forced labor in Osnabrück area for the prisoners of war in Piesberg and for the end of the war in 1945 in the area.

Farewell

In March 2020 Greek students will host their partners in Aliveri.

The project is being implemented under the EUROPEANS FOR PEACE International Youth Projects with the support of the Erinnerung Verantwortung Zukunft Foundation (EVZ) and it is one of four school projects approved by EVZ throughout Germany for 2019-20. The founders of the project, Sandra Frommeyer, deputy director of the German school, and the teacher Litsa Glarou from Greece, were invited by the Foundation for the Consultation Seminar 2019 in Weimar in May 17 to 20, 2019.
