Our journey started from the local competition that took place in December 2022 under the responsibility of the National Natural Sciences Laboratory Centre of Rhodes. Our school participated with two groups of three students each, the training of which was undertaken by the teachers of Biology: C. Angelides and A. Tenende, the teachers of physics: Th. Matzavinou and E. Flouri and the teachers of  chemistry: S. Koupadi and E. Pilini and of course with the full support and assistance of the Director, Mr. Karagiannis Vassilis, Physicist.

The first place in the local competition was taken by the students Karamolegkou Argyro, Kousoutzi Panagiota and Schisa Stefania — Agapi, who won the qualification and went to Athens to claim the first place in the Panhellenic competition, accompanied by teachers of Biology Mr Tenende Angeliki and Mr. Angelidis Christina. There, despite the huge competition, they managed to bring a very good place among all the schools in Greece that qualified. The GE.L. of Naxos along with the GE.L. of Agioi Anargyroi won the 1st place and they will represent our country in the European Olympiad.

At this point, we would like to thank Mr. Koliadis Alexandros, President of the M.O.C.S.R.(Municipal Organization of Culture and Sports of Rhodes), for his immediate response and full support. Without the valuable help of Mr. Koliadis and the M.O.C.S.R., who covered all the travel expenses, none of the above could be realised.

IARD surveys.

The IARD Institute, founded in Milan in 1961 by Franco Brambilla and named after him since 2002, is a body active in sociological research and in the professional training connected to it.

Numerous researches have been conducted by IARD, both nationally and locally, on issues related to the condition of youth. Among the many, it is worth mentioning the three editions of “Fare scuola” on the living and working conditions of teachers in Italian schools

The IARD foundation presents a comprehensive view of teachers through three surveys (1990-1999-2010)

Third Iard Survey (2010)

The main points of the investigation are reported.

– Teachers and social inequalities: feminization has gone from 2/3 to over 3/4 of the total teaching body.

– High average age.

– The change in social policies has led to fewer young people entering school.

– Wages are lower than in Europe. Miller and Chamberlain (2000) demonstrated how a profession that tends towards feminization tends to be socially demeaned and increasingly rejected by males.

-Training and professionalism: the younger ones have attended the new degree courses, the older ones are outside the refresher system.

-Inadequacy of school systems to cope with the accelerated pace of social change

-Inadequacy of professional training

– Motivation to teach. Mattioli (2009) reports that the depictions of teachers are polarized, either they are moved by a vocation or they choose a permanent state job out of opportunism.

Europe 2020.

  3. lifelong learning and the mobility of students and teachers with periods of training abroad.
  4. high quality of teaching in general.

Therefore EU flagship initiative “An agenda for new skills and jobs” to modernize labor markets by
facilitating labor mobility and the development of skills throughout the lifecycle with a view to
increase labor participation and better match labor supply and demand.

Rhodes Island.

Rhodes Island, known for its medieval architecture and castles, is the 4th largest island of Greece and the largest of the Dodecanese Islands, located in the Aegean Sea. Rhodes has been inhabited since the Neolithic period (4000 B.C) and due to its size and location, it has been famous throughout history.

During the Hellenistic Period (323BC – 33 BC), the island flourished economically and culturally. As one of the most organized and eminent periods of ancient times, the growth and expansion of the cities were immense. A case in point was in 280 BC when the citizens built the monumental statue of the Greek sun-god Helios. It’s more widely known as the Colossus of Rhodes, one of the Seven Wonders Of The Ancient World. It stood 33 meters tall and was made of polished brass but has collapsed during an earthquake in 292 BC. Unfortunately, it was never restored.

Another prime period of Rhodes was during the two centuries of the “Domination of the Knights” 1300-1522. They built and restored a hospital, a palace, several churches, and various castles. The Old Town of Rhodes still carries its medieval character with excellent examples of Gothic and Renaissance architecture. In 1522, the Ottoman Empire defeated the Knights and enslaved the island for 4 eons. After these 400 years, Italy occupied the island and they created a colony named “The Italian Islands of the Aegean”. Even though the inhabitants were Greeks for centuries, it wasn’t until 1947 that the island was reunited with modern-day Greece, due to the WW2 Peace Treaty. The Medieval Old City of Rhodes has been declared a World Heritage Site. The unique traits of the island’s history, are still showing today, especially in architecture. The Palace of the Grand Master, the remaining buildings of the Order of the Knights, the Turkish Baths are some to name a few.

Today, Rhodes Island is one of the top vacation destinations in Europe due to its uniqueness! Rhodes offers something for every taste; the cosmopolitan and traditional are blended into what locals call “life on Rhodes”.

Meet 4th GEL Rodou.

APOF 2021 22

4th GEL Rodou is a public secondary school in Rhodes city, Greece. It has more than 450 students and 50 teachers. Offers general education of all subjects, such as languages, sciences, health sciences and economics. Most of the students are preparing for the national exams and continue their studies in greek and other European universities after graduating.

The school is active in Erasmus projects and both teachers and students have embraced with enthusiasm and hard work this opportunity to meet people and learn more. Furthermore, every school year many extracurricular projects take place at 4th High School aiming to enlarge students’ love for sciences and connect all sciences with society and culture. The ultimate goal is to promote sciences as vibrant, functional, creative and interactive parts of every society, rather than learning textbooks by heart.

In this context, over the last five years the school participates in the interactive exhibition of the Athens Science Festival presenting students’ project work in many fields such as marine biology, ecology, archeometry, youth entrepreneurship and economics, geology. Student groups have twice participated in the National School Rhetoric Competition “SchoolLab Live” winning the 1st National Prize in 2018. Also, during the school year 2017-18 students organized an innovative “Science Escape Room” that was presented at the 9th Pan-Hellenic Conference for ICT in Education.
