Tenerife adventure !

Twelve students from FYD went to Tenerife in week 15 – it is the “South” for many Norwegians, but the students from Vg1 Studies Specialization
were there to learn about the island’s very special geology, climate and history.
The trip was linked to the subject Geography, and geography teacher Odin Thorbjørnsen was with our students together with science teacher Helge Jellestad.
Tenerife and the rest of the Canary Islands have a volcanic geology, says Odin. – We went for a walk in the crater areas and on Pico Teide, the highest volcanic mountain on the island.
Our students got to see good examples of different layers of ash and lava flows.
They gain a different understanding when they can see and feel the types of stone, lift them and feel their weight.
– The climate on Tenerife is very complex, despite the fact that the island is small, he continues.
– We were in desert areas and in the lush Anaga area where there is a humid Atlantic climate.

We love school trips

Student and study trips abroad are a focus area for Fyllingsdalen vgs. Our goal is for as many of our students as possible to visit upper secondary schools and other institutions abroad, meet young people from a different cultural background and gain insight into how they work with academic content. Our students can also take part in hosting students and teachers from the schools we collaborate with.

Mads and the professors discuss two completely different poems: Hölderlin’s “Midtveges i lifet” (from 1804, rewritten by Olav H. Hauge) and the closing poem in Anne Helene Guddal’s collection Death and other beggars (as of 2016).

Since this is a live recording, the sound quality will probably vary a bit, but hopefully our listeners can handle it. Chat content maintains high quality.

Bergen (Bjørgvin), is a city …

Bergen panorama at night panoramio 1 1

Bergen (Bjørgvin), is a city on the west coast of Norway with population of 285.900. Bergen is the second largest city in Norway. The city centre and northern neighbourhoods are on ‘the city fjord’, and the city is surrounded by mountains. Bergen is known as the city of seven mountains.

Trading in Bergen may have started as early as the 1020s. According to tradition, the city was founded in 1070 by King Olav Kyrre and was named Bjørgvin, ‘the green meadow among the mountains’.

The city is an international center for aquaculture, shipping, the offshore petroleum industry and subsea technology, and a national centre for higher education, media, tourism and finance. Natives speak a distinct dialect, known as Bergensk.

Bergen has a mild winter climate, though with a lot of precipitation. From December to March, Bergen can, in rare cases, be up to 20 °C warmer than Oslo, even though both cities are at about 60° North. The Gulf Stream keeps the sea relatively warm, considering the latitude, and the mountains protect the city from cold winds from the north, north-east and east.

Sustainability Conference 2023

Οn Friday 17th Feb 2023, Year 1 students welcomed the public to the Sustainability Conference 2023.
Students presented their own solutions for a more sustainable life and society.

The conference concluded the school’s Sustainability Week. The sustainability conference took place at Fyllingsdalen High School on Friday 17/2 at 12:00.

It was based on the UN’s sustainability goals and Year 1 students have tried to find out for themselves how we can achieve the goals.

They worked on the goals for a week and looked critically at the current practice and described the future as they want it to be.

The school also had guests who inspired the students and we heard exciting and educational lectures from Nature and Youth, the Food Center and activist Martin Skadal.

It’s the third year we’ve had Sustainability Week at school and we think it’s a good way to learn about the curriculum goal Sustainable Development.
