The IARD Institute, founded in Milan in 1961 by Franco Brambilla and named after him since 2002, is a body active in sociological research and in the professional training connected to it.
Numerous researches have been conducted by IARD, both nationally and locally, on issues related to the condition of youth. Among the many, it is worth mentioning the three editions of “Fare scuola” on the living and working conditions of teachers in Italian schools
The IARD foundation presents a comprehensive view of teachers through three surveys (1990-1999-2010)
Third Iard Survey (2010)
The main points of the investigation are reported.
– Teachers and social inequalities: feminization has gone from 2/3 to over 3/4 of the total teaching body.
– High average age.
– The change in social policies has led to fewer young people entering school.
– Wages are lower than in Europe. Miller and Chamberlain (2000) demonstrated how a profession that tends towards feminization tends to be socially demeaned and increasingly rejected by males.
-Training and professionalism: the younger ones have attended the new degree courses, the older ones are outside the refresher system.
-Inadequacy of school systems to cope with the accelerated pace of social change
-Inadequacy of professional training
– Motivation to teach. Mattioli (2009) reports that the depictions of teachers are polarized, either they are moved by a vocation or they choose a permanent state job out of opportunism.
