Students and teachers travelled the week from 7-13 April 2019, as guests of Galileo Galilei Technical High School, to historical magical Genova in Italy where they experienced a wonderful full week of warm Italian hospitality and inspired creative activities and workshops.

An unforgettable week of presentations, cooperation, various intensive workshops, cultural scientific and technological activities, and came back home full of unprecedented pictures, knowledge and life experiences.

The students, who were hosted with love and plenty of  Mediterranean care by the families of the Italian students, presented in Genova this year’s studies, projects and craftwork of theirs, according to the schedule of the third year of cooperation, which amongst others  included the gradual energy upgrading aiming at a «green» school, the 3D model of the school building with the use of sustainable energy sources and an energy study-proposition for the upgrading of the school building complex, interviews with scientists and projects concerning the energy footprint of the school as well as the energy footprint of the houses and of the town of Amaliada. Moreover, there was a presentation of the Eratosthenes experiment that our school conducted in cooperation with the schools-partners in the programme with the guidance of the teachers in the educational team Mr Vassilopoulos Gregorios, Mr Spyropoulos Charalampos and Mrs Andreou Aikaterini.

Exploiting creatively their days in the exceptionally organized and equipped contemporary technological premises of Galilei Technical High School, the Italian, Greek and German students cooperated as they took part as mixed groups in pleasant exercises of computer programming, robotics, engineering, chemistry and many other.

They were guided around the historical port of Genova, Pallazzo Rosso and other monuments, they were greeted by the Municipal Administration and in the premises of the Genova Town Hall they were informed about the city and its modern state and they were offered souvenirs. Also, they tasted the local cuisine came in contact with the great history and  the high level Art of  Liguria Region.

They were astonished by the underwater world in the second biggest Aquarium of Europe

and they took part in an activity concerning climate change.

In the mornings, within the framework of work progress in Galileo Galilei school, the students attended presentations of institutes such as the great ABB Industry of Genova and the Italian Institute of Welding with its countless applications in which the whole engineering, technological, constructing, trading and industrial evolution is based.

In PESEA park, they were toured around an energy autonomous technological and agrο-touristic educational unit which uses renewable sources of energy. On location they observed and with the guidance of experts experimented on electricity, solar energy and wind turbines.

They visited the great ITT (Italian Institute of Technology) where great distinguished scientists  inducted the students with big enthusiasm into the latest advances in robotics, nanotechnology, chemistry in the service of  state-of-the-art future recycling  and a lot of other modern miracles in the scientific field. An Institute where different young scientists (among of whom many Greeks) bind their powers together to create the conditions for a better future that we are dreaming of. Students and teachers were impressed and inspired by the researchers, by their future preceding results, their immediacy and passion. their research work and the communicability and directness of  such great scientists.

In the wider area we also visited the traditional and picturesque Paper Museum Mele and waterpower of Aquasanta, where the students watched the captivating procedure of paper creation. They took part in a traditional paper making workshop inside the old stone-walled watermill, whereas after they had visited the Catholic Church of Aquasanta, they enjoyed the local cuisine in a traditional tratoria.

Then they had an impressive sightseeing experience in modern 20th century art in the neoclassical building-museum of Nervi Park and they strolled around the magnificent park coast and rose garden, enjoying the view of the Ligurian coast.

During a special emotional farewell ceremony on the last day, certificates of attendance and gifts were given from Galileo Galilei to everyone.

They were guided around the historical centre and medieval museum, walked around at Piazza Ferrari and then enjoyed the final moving dinner, offered by the Italian parents, with traditional pizza baked in wood-fired oven, on the brightly lit up port of Genova. Together all families, Italian, Greek and German students and teachers we said farewell to the city in an emotional atmosphere.

One month after our return,  not only is nostalgia prevalent but also joy to be back home and share our experiences, after an adventure full of knowledge, happiness, science, art, cooperation, much…walking, wonderful communication and lots of new friends.

The remarkable projects of the students will be presented at the end of this second successful year in June in the form of digital magazine, videos  and exhibitions, and they will be spread through the local press to the community so as to inspire and concern others as they did last year.

In our programme, we work together with Goethe Gymnasium of Cassel, Germany and Galileo Galilei Technical High School of Genova, Italy on subjects such as renewable energy sources, sustainability, climate change, problems and solutions that we have to suggest, but above all each one of us is changing attitude and is applying new environmentally friendly practices in everyday life in the school, family and social environment.
