OUR SCHOOL

The identity of the Primary School of Rizomylos

The Primary School of Rizomylos was established in 1886. Its operation as a one-class mixed school began for the first time the following year. It was originally housed in two Turkish houses.

During the first year, teachers were paid by the parents of the students due to lack of resources, but after 1890 by the state. The local community financed the school fund mainly with money coming from the leases of the meadows.

For the first 40 years or so, pupils had only one book, the reading book. At school, there were five maps and a book with the title «All School Stuff». The teachers used this book to prepare their lessons. During the lesson, the teacher used to present all the facts in a simple way and repeated them once or twice. At the end of the lesson, the students asked questions and, if the teacher had time, he in turn posed them some questions to check  whether the lesson had been understood or not.

Ιn the winter, in order to warm themselves, both teachers and students went to school very early in the morning and burned wood outside the building. Students used to bring this wood from their homes. When the wood was burning, they carried it inside the school to warm themselves. The lessons were being held in the morning and in the afternoon and students were going to school as soon as the church bell rang. On Wednesdays and Saturdays there were no afternoon lessons.

In 1950, after the decision of the Ministry of National Education, the reconstruction of the primary school of Rizomylos began. All the inhabitants of the village offered money so that the reconstruction works of the new building would be finished as soon as possible. The new school building was completed at the end of 1953.

On March 8, 1957, a devastating earthquake took place in the area and, like all the other buildings of the village, the school was destroyed. In subsequent years, teaching took place in cabins. In 1962, the reconstruction of the primary school which included six classrooms began and the works ended in 1966.The following year the school began to operate and it is the building that still exists today.
