Monumental Europe

“Our rich and varied cultural heritage has a profound power to help build our nation”. Nelson Mandela’s words have been our inspiration and motto in the implementation of our project, Monumental Europe, during the European Year of Cultural Heritage 2018. With close cooperation and coordination, the five partner countries have achieved our goals and strengthened our sense of European identity.

https://twinspace.etwinning.net/44435

Collaborative activities have allowed us to deepen into each partner’s cultural heritage and to be sensitized about the value of our monuments, traditions, languages and cultural diversity. The project helped our students become more autonomous, creative, social, communicative and extrovert. They also significantly improved the level of English, as this was the language of communication. Since the beginning of the action, students have had a new challenge: to discover countries, monuments and cultures from Europe and to spread their new knowledge beyond their classroom, school and their cities.

According to their views, they now feel more European. The project plan was fully completed as the participants collaboratively created original material on specific themes.

The synopsis of this multidimentional creative collaboration is a video titled “Monumental Europe in Three Minutes” showing the most important points of the project.

It is important to add that our project has been presented during the school year in several official educational events such as:

  • Two eTwinning workshops for teachers in Pyrgos, Greece
  • The presentation of school projects in the prefecture of Ileia, Greece
  • The presentation of european projects in Patras, Greece, https://www.teachers4europe.gr/repository/node/137
  • eTwinning teacher training session in Manresa, Barcelona, Catalonia
  • President Mattarella, Sardinia, Italy

  • Project Presentation in The Town Hall and in the Gramsci Museum Ghilarza Italy

eTwinning report, 2017

Almost 6,000 eTwinners participated in the 2017 survey and the results were presented in the eTwinning conference in Patras, Greece in November 2017.

90% of the respondents reported that the top skills most impacted by eTwinning are their ability to teach cross-curricular skills and project-based teaching skills.

However, eTwinning’s impact not only affects teachers but also their schools and students. Students are not only becoming more creative but also more collaborative with their teachers and fellow students.

Over 90% of respondents state that eTwinning has had a positive impact on increasing student motivation and fostering collaborative work among them.

eTwinning is an amazing foundation that fosters the development of  a European collaborative culture: appreciating cultural diversity, international collaboration, collaborative learning and professional development!

The full report “eTwinning Twelve Years On: Impact on teachers’ practice skills, and professional development opportunities, as reported by eTwinners” will be online soon. Until then, check the article on the portal of eTwinning  here  or the summary of the report here.

The Climate Action Project

The Climate Action project is a project founded by Koen Timmers. In october 2017, 250 schools over 69 countries participated in the Climate Action project. This project is supported by His Holiness the Dalai Lama, the Jane Goodall Foundation, the 2 directors of Greenpeace, Unesco, Microsoft Education, scientists and other public figures.
Students over 6 continents focussed on Climate Change during 4 weeks.

You can see the amazing work hundreds of teachers and thousands of pupils did on the site at https://www.climate-action.info/

Climate Action
Go to this Sway

We broke down our classroom walls and connected students over 60 countries working on a project. It was a student-centered project which engaged the learners to explore an issue of vital significance.

The students did the research, brainstorming and discussion. They shared their findings via weekly videos or presentations. We, the teachers, did not give away any knowledge. Teachers pointed their students in the right direction and made sure the students verified their sources. All students learned in very different ways, collaborative, by expressing and creating, by doing research, by discussing, by connecting to experts on social media, and had very different outcomes. This project covered several subjects: Science, Math, History, Biology, Literature, and helped ss learn to use certain tools without being instructed how to use them.

My class had the chance to work on this project and cooperate with a school in Ireland but my students explored the work done by many different schools all over the world. You can see our submissions at https://www.climate-action.info/users/kouzouli

Thank you, Koen Timmers, for inspiring us!

World Teachers’ Day

5 October is rldTeachersDay!

Empowering teachers is empowering education!

This year, World Teachers’ Day commemorates the 20th anniversary of the 1997 UNESCO Recommendation concerning the Status of Higher-Education Teaching Personnel. Teaching personnel at institutions of higher education are often overlooked in discussions concerning the status of teachers. Like teachers at pre-primary, primary, and secondary levels, teaching in higher education is a profession requiring expert knowledge, specialized skills, and pedagogical competence.

World Teachers’ Day 2017 will be celebrated under the theme “Teaching in Freedom, Empowering Teachers”, echoing the 2015 theme that followed the adoption of the new Sustainable Development Goals (SGDs) in September 2015, when teacher empowerment was reaffirmed as a top priority in all education and development strategies.

Sustainable Development Goals

No matter which teaching/learning method you are a fan of, make sure, what you teach is purposeful #TeachSDGs

The Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), otherwise known as the Global Goals, are a universal call to action to end poverty, protect the planet and ensure that all people enjoy peace and prosperity.

These 17 Goals build on the successes of the Millennium Development Goals, while including new areas such as climate change, economic inequality, innovation, sustainable consumption, peace and justice, among other priorities. The goals are interconnected – often the key to success on one will involve tackling issues more commonly associated with another.
