James Schuyler (1923-1991) was born in Chicago, IL, but he was inspired to write poetry when he moved with his family to East Aurora, NY, when he was 15 years old. However, his first major collection was published when Schuyler was 46 years old.

The mint bed is in
bloom: lavender haze
day. The grass is
more than green and
throws up sharp and
cutting lights to
slice through the
plane tree leaves. And
on the cloudless blue
I scribble your name.
