Happy Lunar New Year 2019!!!

Today I wanted to talk about the Lunar New Year to my 1st grade students; it’s a great opportunity to get them acquainted with things other than what they already are familiar with. 2019 is the Year of the Pig! I brought a couple of handouts for them, a nice colouring printable and a bookmark to make and use. The nicest part of today’s lesson, though, was the music I brought for them to listen to: The Butterfly Lovers Concerto and Moon Reflected in the Erquan.

Here is more information about the Lunar New Year, for you to use and explain a few things to your students. These are the worksheets I used today, but I’m thinking I could teach animal vocabulary for our next lesson, using the 12 zodiacal signs for the 12 months:

The funny thing about today was that we also cut the vasilopita in our school, for all the students! Happy New Year to all!

“Party with Mr. Men and Little Miss” – Mr. Tall and Little Miss Somersault (with a visit from Mr. Bounce)

For the past couple of lessons with my 2nd graders we’ve been discussing different body types, like Mr. Tall (also Mr. Tickle, Mr. Nosey, Mr. Greedy and Mr. Small, who appear in the book) and Little Miss Somersault (along with Mr. Bounce). Students were introduced to the idea that one’s obvious “drawback” may well indeed be a blessing, as is the case with Mr. Tall! And in the case of Little Miss Somersault, how delightful to see a girl character save the day like a super hero, only to discover that super heroes do sometimes need help themselves! Two lovely messages from Roger Hargeaves, worth the attention of younger learners.

The students drew Mr. Tall this time, easily following this wonderful video, which I only had to pause a little, and then there was also colouring and lots of “Jump! Bounce! Cartwheel!” singing! I think they carried on jumping for the next hour, as by the time we finished, it was time for their P.E. class.

Tales of Beatrix Potter in the EFL classroom presentation on September 7, 2017

In the hot summer month of July I was fortunate enough to have been invited by the School Advisor, Ms Marianthi Kotadaki, to present the work I did on Beatrix Potter during 2016-17 with my then 3rd grade students. The presentation took place at a seminar meeting on September 7, in Pyrgos. This is where you can have a look at it, if you are interested in obtaining a general picture, instead of reading all my blog posts about the project. Enjoy!

Healthy and unhealthy food – an enjoyable activity with 3rd grade

Easel the weasel and Cole the mole have done it again! The 3rd grade students were thrilled to talk about healthy and unhealthy food, intrigued by the characters of Magic Book 2. I gave each student a food word, they illustrated it and then put it on the whiteboard with some tape, on the left (healthy) or the right (unhealthy) side. What a nice way to revise vocabulary!

After that, I was surprised to see them take turns showing their classmates what was in their schoolbag for lunch, saying it in English and also labelling it “healthy” or “unhealthy”. Needless to say, home-made cake was “healthy”, but at least the whole activity made a student with diabetes feel very at ease and it helped put an “I-told-you-so” smile on her face 😉

What’s the weather like? A project for D class, popular among students

This project was done with a lot of excitement! The students really liked going up to the map of Greece in the classroom and finding the towns the wanted to talk about! They revised the relevant language of telling the weather beautifully! They added drawings of the weather description near each town they had chosen and some even wanted to present their project in class, just like a weather forecast!

“Αίσωπε και Potter, παραμυθοβγαίνουμε;” – Η Ιστορία του Πήτερ Ράμπιτ και Η Ιστορία του Μπέντζαμιν Μπάνυ

Πρώτα μεταφράζεις. Μετά μεταφράζεις ξανά. Και έπειτα, καταλήγεις να διαβάζεις δυνατά και φιλάρεσκα τις μεταφράσεις σου, με κάθε ευκαιρία. Τώρα, η ώρα της αλήθειας!

Τα παιδιά έχουν στρογγυλοκάτσει στο χαλί που έχει τοποθετήσει η δασκάλα τους στο πίσω μέρος της τάξης. Ξεκινάω να διαβάζω την ελληνική μετάφρασή μου για την Ιστορία του Πήτερ Ράμπιτ, ενώ παράλληλα τους δείχνω τις εικόνες της Beatrix. Μία ανάγνωση είναι αρκετή για να εθιστούν. Τις επόμενες δυο μέρες φτιάχνουν κι άλλες ιστορίες με ήρωα τον Πήτερ Ράμπιτ.

Πρώτη δραστηριότητα, ζωγραφίζουνε σε ζευγάρια εικόνες από το βιβλίο, με στόχο να τις βάλουν στη σειρά και να αφηγηθούν την ιστορία. Λεπτομέρεια: Καθώς ζωγραφίζουν, γεμίζουν την κόλλα με χρώμα από άκρη σε άκρη, τοποθετώντας τη δράση σε φόντο. Όπως ακριβώς έμαθαν πέρυσι με την δασκάλα των εικαστικών τους -φέτος δυστυχώς το σχολείο δε διαθέτει (προς το παρόν) δασκάλα εικαστικών. Συγκινητικό!

Δεύτερη δραστηριότητα, μαθαίνουν και επαναλαμβάνουν λέξεις όπως garden, rabbit, parsley κ.λπ., κάποιες από τις οποίες γνωρίζουν από τη Β’ τάξη, μέσω flashcards.

Τρίτη δραστηριότητα, συζητούν για το τί έγινε μετά, όπου φυσικά διαφωνούν.

Επιφυλάσσομαι για πολλές ακόμη δραστηριότητες, αλλά πρέπει να προχωρήσω, να τους διαβάσω τη μετάφραση της Ιστορίας του Μπέντζαμιν Μπάνυ. Εδώ επικρατεί ενθουσιασμός, συμμετέχουν στην ιστορία μιλώντας στους δυο πρωταγωνιστές και γενικά παθιάζονται. Καλό.

Ως πρώτη δραστηριότητα εδώ, επιλέγω να μάθουν λεξιλόγιο σχετικό με τον κήπο του κυρίου Μακ Γκρέγκορ, και φτιάχνουμε όλοι μαζί μια τεράστια αφίσα στο ταμπλώ της κεντρικής εισόδου του σχολείου, που προκαλεί την περιέργεια και τα σχόλια και των υπολοίπων μαθητών του σχολείου.

Τα παιδιά του Στ2 ιδιαίτερα ευαισθητοποιούνται από την αφίσα και προθυμοποιούνται να βοηθήσουν σε μια πιθανή δημιουργία και πραγματικού “κήπου του κυρίου Μακ Γκρέγκορ”. Ενδιαφέρον, ακριβώς εξαιτίας του δημιουργικού παρελθόντος των παιδιών αυτών στον κήπο του σχολείου! Ο δάσκαλος του Στ2, κύριος Άγγελος Μιχαλόπουλος, και η κυρία Όλγα επίσης εμπλέκονται στο πρόγραμμα, καθώς η κυρία Όλγα υπόσχεται να μας προμηθεύσει με παραδοσιακούς σπόρους για όλα αυτά τα φυτά, κινητοποιώντας και τα παιδιά του Γ1 να μάθουν περισσότερα πράγματα για την κηπουρική! Κι έτσι, ενώ αυτές οι δραστηριότητες υλοποιήθηκαν στο διάστημα Νοεμβρίου-Δεκεμβρίου, η καινούρια χρονιά προβλέπεται να ξεκινήσει με τους καλύτερους οιωνούς!
