Paul Pickleberry was excited to share his progress from Speak English with Vanessa. “I understand Vanessa very well!” he announced.
“Good for you, Paul,” I said. “What have you learned/learnt this week?”
“She said I should practice/practise asking polite questions, so I tried it with my neighbour,” Paul explained.
“And how did it go?” I asked.
“Well, I knocked on his door and said, ‘Excuse me, sir, could you possibly lend me your garden gnome for the weekend?’ He just stared at me and shut the door!”
The class howled with laughter, and Paul shrugged. “Vanessa said to practise, not to make sense!” 😄
