Herbs & Cooking

Nowadays the worldwide consumers want more and more from their meals: more naturality, more health, more sustainability, and more taste. The addition of an aromatic plant or herb gives a distinctive flavor to your dishes while releasing its beneficial properties for the body. Moreover, the use of herbs is necessary especially in barbeque since according to surveys, it blocks carcinogenic compounds formed by high temperatures

Aromatic herbs are used in small quantities. Therefore the need to keep in good condition the unused ones. Your task is to find a lot of information in order to know which herb fits on each food, when you can add them in your cooking and how you have to preserve them so to be able to add flavor and taste on your dishes in order to convince a hesitant customer to try your dishes!!

Step one

Students will join a MENTIMETER presentation using their smartphones (by entering a given code at menti.com) and will input their answers to the following questions:

What is the meaning of herbs and spices ?

What’s the difference between herbs and spices?

Why it is important to add herbs in your dishes?

Then we’ll discuss the opinions. After we’ll ask students to watch the following video and complete the list of herbs and spices (worksheet1: https://docs.google.com/document/d/1kdPNAAftbFiWg3-KmjfNc2mfZSxcLbZSUE-3DT1XSHU/edit?usp=sharing) by adding those mentioned to the video and some other they know and use to their dishes.

Step two

How do we know which herb fits in each dish? How do we use them in our cooking?

Students, divided into teams, will search the internet in order to fill the shared presentation, with information on the uses of each herb they have added to their lists, pairing them with some food.

Herbs’ preservation

Using the PowerPoint presentation (https://docs.google.com/presentation/d/1kC-l4kO93yW9knsTFw3Sn_10-p8auQckjUz1LkqTCJ4/edit?usp=sharing) we’ll discuss on their preservation. At the end of the presentation there is a video that students have to watch and then they will describe each method used for basil’s preservation in one paragraph.

Step four

Final project

Students, by using easely.ly (https://www.easel.ly/) are visualizing all their information.to an infographic.

This is how your work will be evaluated.

There is one person doing all the work, and the team is NOT working together.

The team is working individually on their own role, and using limited talked with others in a group

The team is working together, but not using the inflammation to connect with one another.

The whole team is working together, helping each other out, and connecting information with one another.

Research / Understanding

Don’t use sources given & information is not factual. Student lacked knowledge

Use sources were given. Students understood information but couldn’t apply it to their projects

Use sources are given, and students understood information but lacked creativity and informational facts

Use sources, get all information asked and goes beyond to get and applied extra information to give to their classmates a better idea on the subject

No creativity to their presentation, such a little information that classmates aren’t able to understand

Students created a presentation with only text and nothing else.
