Apokries in Greece : Customs & Food

Αποτέλεσμα εικόνας για greek carnival

Greece’s Carnival season, known as “Apokries,” is a period of ten weeks but it culminates on the weekend before “Clean Monday,” (Ash Monday).

Task

Imagine that you are working for a tourist agency and want to make a brochure for a trip that you organise in Greece during this weekend.

The secret ingredients you have to include are:

-emphasise to it as a forbidden festival full of loud music, masqueraders and colourful costumes;

-associate it with the Orthodox traditions

-develop its roots in ancient times

-search for the tastes of Clean Monday

Process

Step one – Apokries as a forbidden festival

Students will use Prezi or Powerpoint, in teams of 3 persons, in order to present the most popular carnival festivals in Greece, giving some extra info. They will take their info from the URLs:

At the end each team will present their work.

Step two -Apokries as Orthodox tradition

Nowadays the Greek carnival is divided in 3 weeks, all preparing for the fasting period, called “Triodio”  Students have to be divided in 3 teams. Each team has to find costumes and tradition for each week.

Try to include the answers in the following questions:

  • How is this week called?
  • With whom is this week associated?
  • Which are the customs of this week?

Make a small audiovisual presentation by using Screencast-o-Matic.

You can find some extra info in the following links:

Step three – Apokries as the worship of Dionysos

Many traditions around Greece have their roots in ancient times. Try to develop Apokries’ roots in ancient times….How it is associated with the God of wine and feast? Use the above links and write an group essay of 150 words on this topic.

Step Four – Apokries as a gastronomy trip

Students have to search for the tastes of Tsiknopebti and Clean Monday and to present them. Take a look at the URL https://www.xpatathens.com/living-in-athens/survival-guide/greek-traditions/item/1278-the-tradition-of-tsiknopempti you will find some useful info for Tsiknopebti.

Step five- Brochure time

You are ready to make your brochure!! All the brochures will be shared with students of other classes. Maybe some will be kept to the library of the school.
