Survival Story :worksheet
SURVIVAL STORY

Once when me and my friend were camping in Northern Ontario (Canada), we decided to follow a trail beside a river. We were stupid and foolish and (kind of) didn’t tell our moms where we were going (we were only 12/13). Being the nature freak I am, I wanted to keep going and see the rest of the forest, we ended up going past the campground boundaries and across a river. About 15 minutes after, I noticed wolf/coyote and bear tracks and got a little frightened. Then about 30 seconds later, it started raining and got me and my friend stuck in the mud. We decided to wait out until it stopped raining. Gladly it stopped about 2 minutes later, So we crawled out, crossed the river BACK to the original side we were on, climbed a rock wall about ten feet high(gladly it was slanted a bit), walked back to our bikes and biked back in the rain.It would have been a lot better if we had a cell phone or some kind of communication with our moms(or a tarp to stop the rain and a magnesium stick and dry tinder to keep us warm) and yes my “preparedness” level has been higher ever since.
Use the words below to fill in the gaps of the sentences that follow.

“My Skin” BY NATALIE MERCHANT
Take a look at my ……………
Look at my hands
There’s so much here that I don’t ………………
Your face-saving ………………
Whispered like prayers
I don’t need them
Because I’ve been treated so wrong
I’ve been treated so long
As if I’m becoming untouchable
Well, contempt loves the ……………..
It ……………in the dark
With fine winding tendrils
That ………………..the heart
They say that promises sweeten the blow
But I don’t need them, no
I don’t need them
I’ve been treated so wrong
I’ve been treated so long
As if I’m becoming untouchable
I’m the slow dying ……………
In the frost killing hour
Sweet turning …………….and untouchable
Oh, I need the darkness
The ………….
The sadness
The weakness
Oh, I need this
I need a ……………
A kiss good night
………………..sweet love of my life
Oh, I need this
I’m the slow dying ……………….
In the frost killing hour
Sweet turning …………..and untouchable
Do you remember the way that you touched me …………………..
All the trembling sweetness I loved and …………………..
Your face-saving ………………whispered like prayers
I don’t need them
Oh, I need the darkness

Oh, I need this
I need a ……………..
A kiss good night
……………..sweet love of my life
Oh, I need this
Well is it dark enough
Can you see me
Do you want me
Can you reach me
Oh, I’m leaving
You better shut your mouth
And hold your ………………..

And catch your ……………..
Oh, I mean this

Things to do………
1 Fill in the gaps while listening to the song .
2 The following are all interpretations of the lyrics of the song. Try to fill in the gaps with a suitable word.

“when you love with your hands and love with your………………., you give it your all. Your worth and your being encrusted into one single instrument of life. Then the promises are ………………and you don’t know what to think. You look at yourself and nothing seems to make …………….anymore. You’re on the ……………..of non-existence. Reality as you knew it ……………………..and nothing seems true anymore. You are………………….., you are dying away.”
Everytime I hear this song, I think of the ……………………………on Animal Planet.
I can relate this song to animal …………………………….and how animals are so innocent. And all they want is love. And mean people trick them into thinking they are going to be safe in the beginning and over time that changes to the point the animal becomes so afraid. But the animal still holds onto the thought of how it used to be when it was loved.
Honestly, I think this is a song that mostly only women will be able to relate to.
When a woman goes through many emotional…………………, particularly in the area of …………………..relationships, she is often seen as being ………………..damaged, cold, and even frigid.
I think the song explores this idea, and also the idea that the narrator wants to feel the warmth of love–……………… and emotionally.
this song makes me cry.
i think its about a woman who has some kind of disease, but its…………………. she wants her lover to love her like he used to, and she wants him to make love to her one last time (the last…………………), but he cant do it. It’s haunting. This song implies a parallel between physical illness and a dying love, ………………by false promises and haunted by memories of a happier time. It deeply regards the potency of human emotion: the speaker loses her sense of ……………………and faith in love due to the loss of her partner’s intimacy, becoming untouchable and cold in the process.
I tend more to think of this as a ……………..up song for people that just want to go deeper into their……………………. the darkness in the pain, the sweetness in the memories and the sadness of life without your love… It’s about how confused you are, wondering what went……………………., wondering if you go any deeper into the darkness your loved one will be able to come and bring you back to life once again…
I would say this describes a marriage or relationship that has lost its physical……………… The sexual passion has died. Her lover makes polite “face-saving” promises that it will get back on track, but she wants him to “remember the way you touched me before.” The loss of physical love is why she feels “…………………….”
3 After reading the interpretations , do you side with any of the above? What is your personal comment?
A MINI BIO…
Natalie Anne Merchant was born on October 26, 1963 in Jamestown, New York, USA. The third of four children, Natalie displayed a love for music at an early age, though she never thought of it as a career choice. Natalie originally wanted to become a teacher, but that changed when she met Robert Buck in 1981 and became the lead singer for 10,000 Maniacs. The band release eight albums together.
Determined to do things her way, Natalie wrote and produced the album “Tigerlily” (1995). The album, highlighted by Natalie’s beautiful vocals and piano playing, sold over 5 million copies worldwide. Even though Natalie was tearing up the charts, she released “Ophelia” in 1998 and proved that musical integrity is more important than record sales.
Though best known for her music, Natalie has volunteered as a children’s arts and crafts teacher at numerous homeless shelters in Harlem, and has donated money for various women’s and children’s causes.
The year 2003 proved to be a great milestone for Natalie — she turned forty, got married for the first time, and gave birth to her first child all in the same year. In the summer, she and her personal photographer-husband Daniel de la Calle and their daughter Lucia live in a small mountainside village outside Malaga in Southern Spain where her husband is from, winter is spent in Hawaii, and springtime is spent in Japan appreciating the blossoms in Kyoto – Merchant’s “favorite city in the world”. They spend the rest of the year in Upstate New York where Merchant grew up.
Hope You enjoyed the Song!

Law-Order-Crime-Punishment
A PRISONER DIARY
TUESDAY, MAY 17, 2005
All stories have beginning, my blog shall not be an exception. The beginning of this Blog is sorrow. Simple word, “Sorrow“, yet the most painful feeling. Sorrow is sadness. Sorrow is when u r sad, alone & emptiness. The worse thing is, it is silent. U will suffer without anyone knowing. U suffer in this emotion prison alone. U will shout, no man will hear. U will speak, no man will understand. This is the sorrow I am toking abt.
It had been days, weeks or months? I forgotten. Everyday in the prison seems the same. Same 4 walls wif all ur happy moment craved on it. Same bars tat have words of sad moment on it. It is dark and there is no different between day & night. I will lie on the hard cold bed, facing the walls. I will laugh when i saw tat happy times. I saw tat beautiful smile when he is playing wif his younger brother. I saw his back, full of confidence when he receive awards on stage. I heard the voice of a leader tat teaches and guides ppl. I saw the him happily deeply in love wif his lover. He enjoys every stages of his life. Since his birth he leads a life full of joy, pride, confidence, love. and I wispered softly …Matthias.. It is me. I noe tat voice, tat face. It is me….
I stood up. Walked right to the bars. thinking to break free yet I saw… my sad moment. Broken relationships. Shattered Family. Unforsee future. I am lost. Emptiness haunts me. Friends who had left me. My love tat had forsaken me. My family tat broke and shattered like glass. My future which is so dark and unknown. It is saddness, disappointment, emptiness & lost became a voice… tat echoed among the 4 walls. In my mind. I teared. Run back to my bed and hid my face. I shouted. I lunged out all my despair. Yet all tat is wif me is tears.
I hid to one corner and turn my face away. But each day, I will still see the 4 walls and the cycle repeats itself… No one noes… No one hears the cry for my soul is imprisoned in the mind…

Ex-Convicts: Life After Prison
When a person is convicted of committing a crime in the United States, depending on the crime’s nature, he or she may serve prison time. Life during prison can be difficult, but for many inmates, life after prison is even more challenging.
How Many People are Incarcerated at Any Given Time?
At any given time, there are approximately 2.3 million men and women incarcerated in the United States. Prison sentences for inmates range from a few days to multiple life sentences. Often, prisoners are not required to serve their entire sentence if they are able to accept a plea deal, win an appeals case, or be released early for good behavior.
What Services Exist to Help Ex-Convicts Assimilate into Society After Prison?
There are a number of incentives for private businesses to hire ex-convicts after they are released. These incentives include government-funded training for those recently released from prison and tax breaks for the private companies that hire them. According to the Bureau of Justice, approximately half of all of those released who cannot find employment in the first month after will be rearrested. According to the same source, approximately 93 percent of all who are able to find employment within the first month of release are not rearrested and are able to successfully assimilate back into society.
What is Project Hope?
Project Hope is a public organization that brings members of the community and ex-convicts together to talk about issues facing those recently released from prison and how the community can overcome them. The organization also works to break down the barrier of stereotypes that often exist between the general public and those who have been incarcerated. It is also the hope of the program that ex-convicts will be able to make connections with people who will help them find a job or put them in touch with someone who can. Project Hope aims to help those recently released from prison develop a solid and positive base of friends willing to help them through the difficult times ahead.
The vocabulary items below have been taken from the above article. Use them to fill in the gaps of the sentences that follow.

Finally, a quote to bear in mind….
Most people are prisoners, thinking only about the future or living in the past. They are not in the present , and the present is where everything begins. (Carlos Santana)

Animal testing cons
Animal testing statistics show many creatures lose their lives during the course of experiments. Some lose their limbs, eyesight, hearing ability, etc. All in the name of saving human lives.
Animals have to put up with poking needles, cuts and poisonous chemicals being injected into their system and being caged in a really small space for what seems to be an eternity with the smell of disinfectants.
Animal testing in cosmetic industry as well as household products is not worth the life of a poor animal , not to mention, the cost of housing, feeding, caring which is very high. Also the controlled environment may take toll on their minds.
Most animal experiments are misleading as animal response to a drug cannot be absolutely similar to human’s. In fact , 92% of drugs that claim to pass the animal trials fail when tested on humans.
With stem research and genetics getting a push, animals are subjected to further animal cruelty. Hybrid animals and cloning is carried out on poor animals who are injected with genes of other animals , the resultant being a cross. Do we therefore have the right to reduce the dignity of animals by forcing mutations on them???
- What are some things that animals have to put up with during animal testing?
- Animal testing for medical purposes is not so strongly opposed to by people . Which kind of animal testing is considered unethical?
- What makes genetics even more unethical compared to other forms of animal testing?

Macaca mulatta rhesus monkey Worksheet
Macaca mulatta
rhesus monkey
1)———————–
Populations of rhesus monkeys (Macaca mulatta) are most commonly found in western Afghanistan, through India to northern Thailand. This species was abundant historically in southern China and Tibet, but humans have caused drastic decline of populations in these areas over the last sixty years. Because M. mulatta is often used for research, today populations are kept in captivity world wide.
2)——————————————–
Macaca mulatta lives in a wide range of habitats, and shows a great deal of adaptability. Some populations live in flatlands, while others, in northern India and Pakistan, live in the Himalayas at elevations up to 3,000 m. These primates are able to aclimate to a variety of climatic extremes, from the hot, dry temperatures found in deserts, to cold winter temperatures which fall to well below the freezing point.
3)——————————————————
These smallish monkeys have grizzled-brown fur dorsally, with the fur on the ventral being slightly lighter in color. The hair is short on the head. The face and buttocks of adults are red.
4)——————————————————-
Although rhesus monkeys show mate preferences, in general they are highly promiscuous. As they live in multi-male, multifemale groups, there are ample opportunities for individuals to copulate with multiple partners.
Males attract mates either by having high dominance status within the social group, or sometimes by being friendly (grooming, carrying infants, etc) to females.
5)——————————————————-
Rhesus monkeys are highly active and very loud. They enjoy being in water and are good swimmers. They live in groups of up to two hundred individuals. When a group’s size reaches 80 to 100 members, a subgroup of females may split off to form a new group.
Dominance hierarchies exist in both sexes. This is far more evident in males, where competition for mates may occur regularly. The female members of a group usually live in complete harmony and rarely have violent interactions with one another.
Although rhesus monkeys live in groups, they are not territorial. Each group of individuals usually has its own sleeping space, but the territories of neighboring groups may overlap considerably. Confrontations between groups are rare. Usually when groups meet, the weaker group will avoid the stronger group. Any confrontations that arise are because of an uncertainty concerning strength and dominance.
6)——————————————————-
The dietary habits of rhesus monkeys can vary greatly depending upon where they live. Macaca mulatta is omnivorous, and often eat roots, herbs, fruits, insects, crops, and small animals. The diet can also vary with the season. For example, rhesus that live in the mountain forests of northern Pakistan feed primarily on clovers during the summer, but during winter when snow covers the ground they are forced to switch to foods with lower nutritional values and higher fiber contents, such as pine needles and oak leaves. These monkeys seem to choose their environments carefully with respect to food resources. Even when they are forced to switch to lower quality food sources during the winter months they do not exhibit higher mortality rates, although they may lose a considerable percentage of their body weight.
7)——————————————————-
Macaca mulatta is a popular zoo animal because of its innate curiosity and active lifestyle. These monkeys are also used extensively for research. They are especially useful in biological, medicinal, and psychological research. Macaca mulatta is most often used in psychological research when the emphasis is on perception, learning, or behavior.
Rh factor is also called “Rhesus factor” because it was first discovered in the blood of Rhesus monkeys (small monkeys from India often used for experimentation). Rh factor is an antigen, a substance which stimulates the production of antibodies to fight foreign invaders, such as viruses, bacteria and transplanted organs. A given individual either has the antigen already in their blood (they are Rh positive), or they don’t (they are Rh negative). A patient’s Rh status effects how he or she handles blood transfusions or organ transplants.
8)————————————————————
Rhesus monkeys can live up to 30 years.

Give it Back! The Ethics of Repatriation
Give it Back! The Ethics of Repatriation
Lord Elgin used saws to hack off the famous Elgin Marbles from the Parthenon to move them to Britain. Giovani Belzoni , in the early 19th century, took more artifacts from Egypt than Napoleon’s armies did.
Today most governments have laws that prevent these activities from taking place. To keep artifacts from leaving their country, and encourage their return, governments have designed antiquities laws to curtail exports and regulate the way archaeology is done. It is also common for governments now to ask foreign museums to repatriate artifacts that have already been taken.
In these laws artifacts cannot be exported from the country without special permission-something that is rarely given. Digs must be approved and monitored by a government authority, such as the Supreme Council for Antiquities (SCA) . The people who conduct digs or investigations must have the proper qualifications, such as a PhD in archaeology.
They must also report their findings to the state and turn over artifacts that are found.
In their laws China,Greece and Egypt make clear that artifacts found at a dig site are property of the state, regardless of whether they are found on private property.
Even with the absence of antiquity laws archaeologists are encouraged to follow certain ethical beliefs : record site diligently, report all findings, publish as much as possible, don’t sell or steal artifacts, don’t publicly release information that will help looters, and so on. These are all principles that are taught in archaeology schools from Cambridge to Tokyo. Any student today who suggests dynamite as an excavation method would likely get a failing grade.

There are numerous attempts by countries to reclaim artifacts that were taken out in earlier times. Greece wants the Elgin Marbles back, Ethiopia got the Obelisk of Axum back in 2005 and Egypt wants several of its treasures back including the Rosetta Stone and the bust of Nefertiti.
This is only the tip of the iceberg of requests to return antiquities. There are several arguments made for repatriating artifacts. Sometimes there is a legal argument or an ethical one. Even in cases where permission is granted , sometimes it was by a government that was not representative of the people. For example permission for the removal of the Elgin Marbles was granted by the Sultan of the Ottoman Empire , who forcibly ruled over Greece at the time.
The strongest argument is nationalistic; antiquities are the property of the people if the country of origin and should be recallable by the state. James Cuno ,the president of the Art Institute of Chicago ,disagrees by saying that artifacts “are the cultural property of all humankind…evidence of the world’s ancient past and not that of a particular modern nation, they comprise antiquity , and antiquity knows no borders.
Other arguments include claims that permission was granted by the proper authority, as is occasionally put forward by opponents to the return of the Elgin Marbles , and the general claim that if every museum repatriated all their artifacts they would have little left to exhibit.
The priceless artifacts of antiquity may have been taken recklessly in the first instance, but their repatriation will be a hotly -debated and lengthy process indeed.
