“My Skin” BY NATALIE MERCHANT

Take a look at my ……………

Look at my hands
There’s so much here that I don’t ………………
Your face-saving ………………
Whispered like prayers
I don’t need them

Because I’ve been treated so wrong
I’ve been treated so long
As if I’m becoming untouchable
Well, contempt loves the ……………..
It ……………in the dark
With fine winding tendrils
That ………………..the heart
They say that promises sweeten the blow
But I don’t need them, no
I don’t need them

I’ve been treated so wrong
I’ve been treated so long
As if I’m becoming untouchable
I’m the slow dying ……………

In the frost killing hour
Sweet turning …………….and untouchable

Oh, I need the darkness
The ………….

The sadness
The weakness
Oh, I need this
I need a ……………

A kiss good night
………………..sweet love of my life
Oh, I need this

I’m the slow dying ……………….
In the frost killing hour
Sweet turning …………..and untouchable
Do you remember the way that you touched me …………………..
All the trembling sweetness I loved and …………………..
Your face-saving ………………whispered like prayers
I don’t need them

Oh, I need the darkness
The ………………..

The sadness
The weakness
Oh, I need this
I need a ……………..

A kiss good night
……………..sweet love of my life
Oh, I need this

Well is it dark enough
Can you see me
Do you want me
Can you reach me
Oh, I’m leaving
You better shut your mouth
And hold your ………………..
And kiss me now
And catch your ……………..

Oh, I mean this
Oh, I mean this

Things to do………

1 Fill in the gaps while listening to the song .

2 The following are all interpretations of the lyrics of the song.  Try to fill in the gaps with a suitable word.

irrevocable  – sense – terminal – intimacy – cease –  commercial  -physically   – abuse-  break  -struggles  –   body – romantic –  verse  -tainted-  brink –   wilt-  self worth  -sadness  -untouchable-   broken – wrong

“when you love with your hands and love with your………………., you give it your all. Your worth and your being encrusted into one single instrument of life. Then the promises are ………………and you don’t know what to think. You look at yourself and nothing seems to make …………….anymore. You’re on the ……………..of non-existence. Reality as you knew it ……………………..and nothing seems true anymore. You are………………….., you are dying away.”

Everytime I hear this song, I think of the ……………………………on Animal Planet.
I can relate  this song to animal …………………………….and how animals are so innocent. And all they want is love. And mean people trick them into thinking they are going to be safe in the beginning and over time that changes to the point the animal becomes so afraid. But the animal still holds onto the thought of how it used to be when it was loved.

Honestly, I think this is a song that mostly only women will be able to relate to.

When a woman goes through many emotional…………………, particularly in the area of …………………..relationships, she is often seen as being ………………..damaged, cold, and even frigid.

I think the song explores this idea, and also the idea that the narrator wants to feel the warmth of love–……………… and emotionally.

this song makes me cry.
i think its about a woman who has some kind of disease, but its…………………. she wants her lover to love her like he used to, and she wants him to make love to her one last time (the last…………………), but he cant do it.  It’s haunting. This song implies a parallel between physical illness and a dying love, ………………by false promises and haunted by memories of a happier time. It deeply regards the potency of human emotion: the speaker loses her sense of ……………………and faith in love due to the loss of her partner’s intimacy, becoming untouchable and cold in the process.

I tend more to think of this as a ……………..up song for people that just want to go deeper into their……………………. the darkness in the pain, the sweetness in the memories and the sadness of life without your love… It’s about how confused you are, wondering what went……………………., wondering if you go any deeper into the darkness your loved one will be able to come and bring you back to life once again…

I would say this describes a marriage or relationship that has lost its physical……………… The sexual passion has died. Her lover makes polite “face-saving” promises that it will get back on track, but she wants him to “remember the way you touched me before.” The loss of physical love is why she feels “…………………….”

3 After reading the interpretations , do you side with any of the above? What is your personal comment?

A MINI BIO…

Natalie Anne Merchant was born on October 26, 1963 in Jamestown, New York, USA. The third of four children, Natalie displayed a love for music at an early age, though she never thought of it as a career choice. Natalie originally wanted to become a teacher, but that changed when she met Robert Buck in 1981 and became the lead singer for 10,000 Maniacs. The band release eight albums together.

Determined to do things her way, Natalie wrote and produced the album “Tigerlily” (1995). The album, highlighted by Natalie’s beautiful vocals and piano playing, sold over 5 million copies worldwide. Even though Natalie was tearing up the charts, she released “Ophelia” in 1998 and proved that musical integrity is more important than record sales.

Though best known for her music, Natalie has volunteered as a children’s arts and crafts teacher at numerous homeless shelters in Harlem, and has donated money for various women’s and children’s causes.

The year 2003 proved to be a great milestone for Natalie — she turned forty, got married for the first time, and gave birth to her first child all in the same year. In the summer, she and her personal photographer-husband Daniel de la Calle and their daughter Lucia live in a small mountainside village outside Malaga in Southern Spain where her husband is from, winter is spent in Hawaii, and springtime is spent in Japan appreciating the blossoms in Kyoto – Merchant’s “favorite city in the world”. They spend the rest of the year in Upstate New York where Merchant grew up.
