The White Tower
The White Tower is the most famous landmark of Thessaloniki, located on the city’s waterfront. It was built in the 15th century by the Ottomans as part of the city’s fortifications. Today, it serves as a museum and offers a stunning view of the Thermaic Gulf.
The White Tower hides many stories! Imagine that a long, long time ago, they didn’t call it that. It had various names, such as “Tower of the Lion” or even… “Red Tower “! That was because it functioned as a prison inside.
It is said that once upon a time, a prisoner asked to be set free, and in exchange, he painted the whole Tower with white paint! That’s how, from then on, it got the name White Tower, as if it had washed away its old, dark history and started a new, brighter one!
The Umbrellas of Zongolopoulos
These giant, shiny umbrellas also on the waterfront of Thessaloniki were made by a Greek artist named George Zongolopoulos. They look like they are dancing happily by the sea, and they love to catch the sunlight and the wind!
