Exploring European Countries (Crossword projects)

Unit 1 – Our multicultural class – Lesson 1 (Meeting the newcomers).

After teaching Lesson 1, I used to assign to my students writing a report about a country similar to the ones in the book.

For this purpose, over the years, I have used posters ,google slides presentations and/or making videos. These last two years I found out that making a crossword – presentation  about a european country in groups, is an easier and more enjoyable way to research and present information about a country. In fact such a project offers numerous benefits for my students.

Cognitive and academic benefits
  • Enhances vocabulary and spelling:

Students learn and reinforce new words by encountering and spelling them correctly, which improves retention and comprehension.

  • Improves critical thinking:

Puzzles stimulate problem-solving, require students to think creatively, and encourage them to analyze information to find the correct answers.

  • Reinforces learning:

Crosswords offer a dynamic and interactive way to review material and check for understanding, helping students apply learned concepts in a new context.

  • Helps identify knowledge gaps:

Puzzles can reveal areas where students are struggling, allowing teachers to better address specific weaknesses.

Engagement and motivational benefits
  • Increases interest and motivation:

The game-like nature of crosswords makes learning more enjoyable and can boost student interest in a subject.

  • Promotes persistence:

Solving puzzles requires students to persevere through challenges, fostering a growth mindset and resilience.

  • Boosts confidence:

Successfully completing puzzles gives students a sense of accomplishment and increases their confidence in their knowledge.

Collaborative and social benefits
  • Encourages teamwork:
Working on puzzles in groups promotes communication, collaboration, and social bonding.
  • Fosters curiosity:
When students find an interesting answer, it can spark a desire to learn more about that topic, encouraging them to seek out new information.
  • Encourages self-sufficiency:
Students may become more reliant on their own abilities to solve problems, motivating them to try without immediately asking for help.

So I created the worksheet below for my students to create crosswords. This year students used the crossword created by my 6th graders last year in order to revise the material taught about Ukraine , Albania and Georgia.
