Based on Unit 1 –Lesson 1 –Our multicultural class, my 6th grade students wrote reports for nine different European countries.(you can find the lesson plan here).

It was no easy task since they had to work in teams, search for information and decide which of the information would impress their classmates.

After they had written their reports they were asked  to prepare a presentation using Google Docs presentations. Our ICT teacher Mrs Agathi Dova helped the students learn how  to use the tool. The students had to choose the right pictures to accompany their reports .They worked at school during  ICT lesson while some of them chose to work at home as well using their own computer.

In the process, I had the chance to monitor their work through my drive and even write notes with suggestions or corrections under their slides.

Finally each group shared their work with the other teams and had the chance to comment and evaluate the work of their classmates in our

 Country reports padlet.

• You are invited to leave your comments and evaluate my students’ work , giving them feedback so their future presentations will be even better.

I thought it would be a good idea to adapt the specific text,so that it can be read more easily by my students. It is especially adapted to suit the needs of students with learning disabilities, but it also helps the rest of the students understand the content as well as the vocabulary better. It is accompanied by pictures as well as the text fragmented so as to make presentation for the teachers and comprehension for the students easier.I hope you will find it useful.

Ukraine

I come from Ukraine, the second largest country in Europe. It is between Poland and Moldavia in the west and Russia in the east. I don’t come from the capital Kiev. My hometown is Odessa, on the coast of the Black Sea. Ukraine has got large plains but also high mountains, such as the Carpathians. The River Dnipo flows across the country splitting it in two parts.

In winter the weather gets very cold. Summers are warm across the greater part of the country and cool along the Black Sea, so we spend much more time outdoors.

A nuclear power plant accident in Chernobyl, in 1986, is still causing serious environmental problems which worry Ukrainian people. Today we don’t have enough drinking water supplies because of that accident.

Despite these problems, I believe Ukraine is a beautiful country with outgoing and brave people. I love it very much.

Sasha

Albania

Albania, the ancient Illyria, is where I come from. My hometown is Tirana, the capital of Albania. Albania shares borders with Serbia, Montenegro and Greece. On the west, it is bordering the Andriatic Sea  and the Ionian Sea.

The beaches are beautiful and during the hot, dry summers we swim in the clear sea, but in winter the temperature usually drops and it often rains heavily, so there are a lot of forests. We often have problems with natural disasters, such as earthquakes or tsunamis that happen along the South coast.

Mother Teresa , the popular nun and humanitarian Nobel Prize winner, is of Albanian origin.

My country is not very rich and our parents sometimes go to other countries, such as Italy, France or Greece, and work there. However, we miss our homeland.

Christina

Georgia

Do you remember the ancient Colchis and the myth of Jason and the Golden Fleece? That is where I come from, Georgia! It is in the West Asia, bordering the Black Sea, which the Greeks called Pontus Euxinos, Turkey and Russia. The temperature is mild and it is usually sunny and warm. The country is mountainous, but along the coast we grow vines, tea and citrus fruit. In this area the temperature rarely drops below zero. Many people work in copper and coal mines, or in oil wells. Others sometimes leave their hometown to find work. My uncle works in T’blisi, the capital of Georgia.

Using the school website

Συγγραφέας: Δημητρακοπούλου Μαρία | Κατηγορία 3rd Grade, 4th grade, 5th Grade, lesson plan | , στις 05-03-2018

Using the school website to offer some extra digital material for my students has been on my mind since last year when I participated in Andriani Rigoutsou’s  project on Flipped Classroom.I was also influenced by Vivi Hamilou and her excellent work in her blog and by a recent seminar we had with Mrs Kotadaki about dyslexia.

I have been thinking that it would be nice if I could provide my students with additional practice on the various vocabulary and grammatical patterns presented in the coursebooks.I also thought it would be nice to combine it with padlet platform in order to publish certain project work that my students create.

So I have started adding material  for each class in the school website, where students and parents have easy access to.

The material is available for my students for revision or further practice at home .It is designed in accordance to their coursebooks and is constantly updated by me as we move on from one unit to the other.

However , it turned out to be very useful for classroom use too. Whenever we have some free time in class we can always use the material to practice in class. After all it’s all gathered in one place!

This extra material is drawn from various websites .Below you can see some of them.

I have also used quizlet, to create flashcards and quizzes easily. Quizlet has been particularly appealing to students with dyslexia or other learning disabilities as it combines images with sound.

I still have a long way to go as I’m planning to create material for each unit  and each level separately. It’s a longterm project but from the feedback I got from the “experts”, my students that is, I believe it’s worth trying.

Hungry anyone? (6th grade-Unit 2)

If you’re hungry I’ve got the solution for you! Try one of the recipes that my 6th graders wrote . Traditional greek dishes and dessert recipes written for you to try.For the past two weeks my little chefs frizzled, boiled, baked ,mixed using not only the food vocabulary we learned in Unit 2,but also the cooking verbs video from our Unit 2 padlet and finally published their Recipes in our padlet.

First I thought that writing a recipe would be too challenging for them. I am really impressed and thankful that they embraced this challenge and responded willingly. Writing their recipes was no easy task, but it really paid off. They learned a lot of new words, they familiarised more with the use of padlet, they read their classmates’ works and commented on them, while in the process we enjoyed ourselves and talked about our favourite tastes and smells that filled our classroom. I want to thank my dear colleague Vivi Hamilou  for the idea to use padlet as a tool to publish their work.I also want to thank her for leaving her comments under their recipes!

I’m waiting for some more recipes and next week I’m planning to upload the recipes on our school website for anyone interested to leave a comment or rank the recipes ! My students will really  appreciate it and feel proud of their work.

Teaching through padlet

Using padlet last year for applying Flipped Classroom Lessons in 6th grade, gave me a lot of ideas about how I can use this tool in many other ways too. So this year , since my timetable doesn’t allow me to use our computer lab, I’ve decided to use padlet in order to :

  • provide  my students with  digital material on each unit (that we won’t have the chance or time to watch in  our computer lab)

  • familiarize them with the use of padlet so as to prepare them for some flipped lessons later on

  • make study , revision and practice more appealing to them

  • save precious time for practicing in class

  • communicate with them through messages on my padlet wall

  • give them time and space to work at their own pace

  • make them active learners

My first attempt was to prepare and upload material for Unit 2 – Going shopping-6th bgrade and my goal is to give them extra material for each unit. Most of the material is taken from photodendro. However you can upload any material (ppt presentations for grammar, links to on line games, videos etc)that serves the linguistic and communicative purposes of each unit.

My dear colleague Vivi Hamilou has recently used padlet to publish her students’writing homework, which is an excellent idea. She has also used the website of her school to upload extra material. There’s  a great amount of digital material to enrich our coursebooks but not enough time to do it at school, so technology may be  the answer.

I hope it all goes well! I’ll be back with my students’ impressions and comments as well as material for the next units.

How can I get to…..? (Asking and giving directions)

Συγγραφέας: Δημητρακοπούλου Μαρία | Κατηγορία 5th Grade | , στις 09-03-2017

Last year ,while I was working on a seminar by Mrs Marianthi Kotadaki on Reflective Teaching , I created  an Action Plan for Unit 3 -Lesson 2 -Asking and Giving Directions , which had always been a headache for me since the material offered in the school coursebook was rather difficult for my students to deal with! So I had to reflect on an Action Plan that would motivate my students ,help them assimilate the relative vocabulary and finally enable them to produce a set of directions (oral and written). The results last year were more than satisfying ,so with a few adjustments I implemented this action plan this year too.I really enjoyed it once again so I thought of sharing it with you.

You can find all the details, comments and material used in the following link:  https://penzu.com/p/9e4ec35c

Below you can see some of my students’ final products this year! It was quite difficult for them to design a small map with the route from their school to their house, so we discussed some of their mistakes but I thought it would be better not to use… my red pen on their final project. IMG_20170309_094413IMG_20170309_090745IMG_20170309_090720IMG_20170309_090703IMG_20170309_090714IMG_20170309_090657IMG_20170307_133300IMG_20170307_133255IMG_20170307_133251IMG_20170307_133237

My «smart cookies»- Food idioms

6

Συγγραφέας: Δημητρακοπούλου Μαρία | Κατηγορία 6th Grade | , στις 29-11-2016

Exploring food idioms , in Unit 2 with my 6th grade students, turned out to be an enjoyable experience.First we did some research on the Internet on food idioms and the meaning they convey. Then the students watched a power point presentation on the same subject and did a matching activity on the most common food idioms.

During the process we had the chance to compare and contrast the english food idoms with  the greek ones.We found differences (as cool as a cucumber) and similarities (butterfinger) and decided to decorate our class with some of them.

It was quite funny and my students had the chance to view food words from a totally different perspective, using the language to tease each other.

Exchanging e-mails

0

Συγγραφέας: Δημητρακοπούλου Μαρία | Κατηγορία 5th Grade | , στις 30-10-2016

Most of our students are usually reluctant when it comes to writing. Reflecting on that problem I thought that writing should most of the times be connected to real life tasks and have a specific purpose. So when I had to teach my 5th graders how to write an e-mail (Unit 1) I thought that it would be a nice idea to use their parents’ e-mail addresses and actually send me an e-mail.
First we talked about the format of an e-mail and showed them the basic technical details using my e-mail. Then I asked them to write to me about their free time activities using the grammar taught in Unit 1(that is the verbs like ,enjoy ,love, prefer, hate ,dislike +verb+-ing),in order to express their likes and dislikes. Next I gave them my e-mail address and a week’s deadline to send me their e-mails. Each student received a different answer depending on the content of their e-mail. I also explained that the words or phrase written in red colour in my replies would mean that they had used these words or phrases in the wrong way in their e-mails. That was my way of correcting their homework and highlighting their mistakes. In addition correcting their «homework in disguise» as I call it from my home ,in my own time ,was quite convenient for me too.
The majority of my students ,even those who are usually unwilling to bring me their homework, participated in the activity. They were enthousiastic about communicating with me personally and they were looking forward to receiving my reply. Most of them had never sent an e-mail before, so this was a brand new experience for them, that motivated them to write and use the FL for a specific purpose. Finally, my students asked me if they could use my e-mail some other time to ask me any questions concerning our lesson and I gladly accepted.
Below you can read some of my students’ e-mails and my replies to them.

a.)Dear Mrs Mary

I’m sending you this e-mail to tell you about my freetime activities.
How are you?

In my free time I do many things but I have favourites and some activities which I don’t like.In my freetime I play with my friends and we do many things. I love playing basketball in my rim ,I prefer playing table tennis to biliards.I enjoy doing trick shots and videos with my friends for bottle fliping.
The activities which I dont’ like doing are few : I dislike help with the housework,I hate climbing and I dont’ like sailing.
That’s all. What about you? What do you like doing in your free time?

THOMAS

Dear Tommy,
I was happy to receive your e-mail and see that you have a lot of interesting hobbies! In fact some of them I knew nothing about like bottle flipping!I also don’t understand the trick shots! What exactly is that?
I agree that most children dislike helping with the housework! Unfortunately I dislike doing the housework as well, but I don’t have a choice you see! I’m the mum!
Anyway, when I find some free time I enjoy going out with my friends and family! I also prefer surfing on the Internet to watching T.V and relaxing on my couch watching movies!
Well that’s all for now! See you at school!
Mrs Mary

I write water bottle flip trick shots. TRICK SHOTS means when you do something difficult with tricks and you do it very very good .

THOMAS

Thank you Thomas for letting me know! Maybe you can teach me some of your tricks! or play with you and your friends sometime in the future!
Bye!

b.)Dear Mrs Maria,

I’m sending you this e-mail to tell you about free times activities.

At the weekends,I love playing football in Amaliadas sports centre.I enjoy playing bottle flipping with my friends Thomas and Jim in the afternoon.I prefer reading subjects English to reading subjects France.I hate climbing because I’m scare the heights.

See you tomorrow.

Goodnight

George

Dear George ,
thank you for sending me your e-mail.I see that you have a lot of things that you like doing with your friends!
I also have some free time only at weekends because during the week I am very busy!
My son unlike you (αντιθετα με σενα) prefers studying French to English! I love listening to people speaking French!
I don’t like climbing too for two reasons! I’m afraid of heights like you and it’s quite tiring for me! I enjoy relaxing at home or going out with my friends and family!
That’s all for now! I have to answer some more e- mails!
See you tomorrow!
Mrs Mary
