A. Τhe European Day of Languages 

2025: Languages open hearts and minds!

Throughout Europe, 700 million Europeans are represented in the Council of Europe’s 46 member states and all are encouraged to discover more languages at any age, as part of or alongside their studies. This stems from the Council of Europe’s conviction that linguistic diversity is a tool for achieving greater intercultural understanding and a key element in the rich cultural heritage of our continent. The Council of Europe, therefore, promotes plurilingualism throughout Europe. 

At the Council of Europe’s initiative, the European Day of Languages has been celebrated every year since 2001 on 26 September – together with the European Commission.

In our school the pupils celebrated the European Day of Languages supported by the foreign language teachers in the school. Ms Sotiria Spirοpoulou (French), Ms Eleni Theofilopoulou and Ms Maria Louvari (English) along with the Art teacher, Ms Vasiliki Damianidou, helped the children to speak their Hearts and Minds. They thought of words that have to do with feelings and made posters in French and English. They also found how to say ‘Good morning’ in many different languages, said the words out loud  or at least, tried to and then wrote them done making a beautiful poster. The students of ST2 designed and painted two figures and wrote a verse of a poem of a famous Greek poet, Yiannis Ritsos, in Greek, English and French. All the kids’ work is being displayed on the big notice board in the entrance of the school for everyone to see and admire.

They also played games in the classroom, watched videos about the EDofL.

Many thanks to all the kids who worked hard this day but also had great fun.

Our D1 class paricipates in the project. The coordinator for the project in our school is Ms Maria Louvari, the teacher of English. The teachers working on the project are Ms Maria Karapouloutidou, their Primary Teacher, Ms Vasiliki Damianidou, the Art teacher and Ms Kiriaki Konti, the Music teacher.

This year our students celebrated the European day of Languages by saying ‘YES TO LANGUAGES‘. They drew pictures, made posters, wrote letters, sang songs in all 3 foreign languages taught in our school, English, French and German. The teachers who participated in our school are Maria Louvari & Eleni Theofilopoulou –English, Sotiria Spiropoulou-French, Panagiota Yiaggou-German.

e-twinning-projects

1. ” Friendship class Denmark/Greece”

This year we are starting a friendship class with a school in Denmark between the students of D’ Class / 4th Grade  in both schools. Let’s hope we have a fruitful relationship through the years and hope to meet in person some time in close future. It is a friendly communication between Ølgod in Denmark and Thessaloniki in Greece.

2. Shape your future

In these days the skills of 21st century are very important for our future. Most important ones of them are Creative Thinking ,Critical Thinking, Collaborative Thinking. Unfortunately, in the world we live in, children grow up closed to cooperation, unaware of critical thinking, far from creative thinking. Children do not want to produce anything, they want to reach everything easily. They want others to solve their problems instead of themselves. So these skills should be supported.

3. When I grow up

Encourage children’s curiosity, have kids enjoy role-playing games, organize local trips and invite people with experiments to introduce them to professions.

4. We are united against climate change

Linking sustainability to responsibility connects the present to the future and respects the heritage of our ancestors. With our project, we aim to raise world citizens who will raise awareness about world problems and have the knowledge, skills and responsibilities to contribute to the solution of current problems. As a result of the work we will do during the project, we aim to prevent the waste of natural resources by recycling waste, reduce the amount of waste and even reset it to zero if possible, increase our students’ environmental awareness, help them discover the causes and effects of waste, and learn how to deal with waste at a personal and social level.
