Learning English Through Play

Teaching English to 4–5-year-olds is all about making language meaningful, fun and natural.

At this age, children learn best through play, movement, songs, stories and colorful material.

My kindergarten approach involves Total Physical Response (TPR), interactive storytelling, games, crafts and multi-sensory activities to create an immersive environment where very young learners can acquire language naturally, effortlessly and happily.

More specifically, great emphasis is placed on these key features:

• A  hand puppet (e.g. a friendly bear, tiger or monkey) as the class mascot that speaks only English (with the teacher’s help, of course!), as well as the mascot’s English friends, i.e. small finger puppets for pupils to use in role-plays so as to encourage low-anxiety practice. Hand and finger puppets are also useful for dramatising stories and songs.

• Flashcards and realia (toys, real fruit, classroom objects) as visual and/or kinaesthetic stimuli

• Sensory bins, boxes & craft supplies, such as playdough, stampers, and large crayons for exploration and fine-motor skill practice

• Interactive songs with actions (e.g. Super Simple Songs and nursery rhymes) for vocabulary, phonics and counting acquisition

• Picture books and storybooks with repetitive rhythm and vocabulary (e.g., Brown Bear, Brown Bear, Pete the Cat, The Very Hungry Caterpillar, Froggy Gets Dressed)

• Interactive read-alouds using varied vocal tones, gestures and facial expressions, as in the following video, as well as story dramatisation with props and masks for the different characters

• Movement games such as “Simon Says,” “Freeze Dance” or ‘I Spy With My Little eye” (eg for color-hunting) that get children moving while processing auditory commands

• Focus on listening and speaking rather than reading or writing
• Short, varied activities appropriate for young attention spans

The above key features provides kindergarten pupils with lots of opportunities to move, respond, imitate and participate in a safe, low-pressure environment thus learning while building confidence, vocabulary, listening skills and a positive attitude towards English!
