‘Let’s celebrate’, the end

Happy day today!

We celebrated the end of our ‘Let’s celebrate’cultural project at school!

The families of the pupils, who participated at the project, attended the school event and had the opportunity to watch their kids explaining everything about the project. There were presentations (pupils’ output, videos, photos) and songs. However, the highlight was the Shrove Tuesday play! Everyone enjoyed it and especially the kids who really wanted to share the fruits of their labor with their families!

At the end, each pupil was awarded a certificate of attendance by the Department of Cultural Affairs of Primary Education of Achaia and recieved a booklet that contained all the material gathered during the project.

Our play in Patra!

Today we participated in the Cultural Projects Event in Patra. The event was hosted by Dr A. Koufou, head of the Department of Cultural Affairs of Primary Education of Achaia, and was held in the Agora Argiri conference hall . Many Primary schools from all over Achaia attended and shared their cultural projects. We presented our Shrove Tuesday play and the pupils were both great actors AND and an amazing audience. We all had a great time!

Getting ready

Today the kids cooperated in preparing a power point presentation about Easter customs in the UK, based on the information they have gathered so far from the minibook, the internet and the video they watched last week.

They also decided to make a poster and an invitation to invite their classmates and the teachers to the Easter customs event they’re organizing next Friday.

Mix a pancake

Class C’ made some pancakes in class today! Yesterday, they learned how to sing the ‘Mix a pancake‘ rhyme.

Today, they watched the famous British chef Jamie Oliver making pancakes with his daughters and learned the ingredients in English. Then, it was their turn to ‘Mix a pancake, stir a pancake…’ !

They all did really well, they learned the ingredients in English, understood and acted out the English instructions and they were all very helpful!

A rising playwright

Anna (class ST’) came with a wonderful surprise today at school. During the last two weeks she and her classmates have been researching what is ‘Shrove Tuesday’ and how it’s celebrated in the UK. Having all the information at hand and a lot of inspiration apparently, she wrote a play about Shrove Tuesday on her own! Copies were made for the other pupils, so that they can contribute with their ideas and also think all about the scenery, casting and costumes. Something tells me that we’ll have a real play performance at school soon!

Researching again

Ιt’s research time again! After learning all about Christmas in the UK, the pupils in All Day school are now looking for information on Shrove Tuesday. They’re searching in british websites for safer information and they’re using dictionairies to make meaning out of them.

Christmas cards – the British way!

Today class C’ made Christmas cards. Some of the pupils who attend All Day School told the rest of the class about how the British hang their cards on a string. So when the wishes were written, each pupil hung his/her card on a piece of string in the English room and wished Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year.

We made a really loooooooooooong traditional British Christmas decoration today, piece by piece, helping each other. That’s the Christmas spirit!

Taking a crack at Christmas crackers!

Today during All Day School the pupils got creative once again and made use of the video they watched last week! They came prepared with all the material: paper rolls, paper, small gifts and jokes. Then, they watched the video again and got down to making them while listening to Christmas songs!

The oldest pupils were in charge of making the crackers, wereas the youngest ones were in charge of writing the jokes and filling the crackers. They liked making them so much that they’re going to make some at home, too, as they said. Each kid will take a handmade cracker home, put it on the Christmas table and explain their families all about this British custom!However, they were so anxious about it, that C and G pulled one in class!

Last week the kids involved in the British Customs project decided to decorate a tree in the English room. And so they did today. It’s a bit small, but cute!

Today classes C’, D’ , E’ and ST’ discussed their notes they took during the last lesson,while watching how Mr Bean (and all British people for that matter) celebrates Christmas. They also saw and discussed photos of British Christmas. They loved the British customs and they decided which ones they would like to bring to life in class.

So, they wrote down that they want to:

decorate a Christmas tree

make crackers

make Christmas chains

learn English carols

Next week they’ll begin with their most favourite custom, making crackers, and making christmas chains! So, here’s the video the older pupils watched in order to be prepared for the next lesson:

In the crackers there’s usually a Christmas hat. This is a great video on how to make it!

We can’t wait to try out ours!

A taste of Halloween and a taste of Christmas

Today it was the day to try the pumpkin cake the kids made yesterday! And the most proper way to do this was to complement it with a nice, funny video. To get a glimpse of what the British do during Christmas, they watched the episode ‘Merry Christmas Mr. Bean’. They had a good laugh, but they also had to focus their attention as they searched for info to fill a table about Bristish Christmas. So, today we had both a taste of Halloween AND Christmas in class.

Well done kids! Your cake was delicious!
