March 21st
March 21st is International Day for the Elimination of Racial Discrimination and World Poetry Day.
Here is a poem written by an anonymous child from Africa that was nominated by the U.N. as The Best Poem of 2006:
When I born, I black
When I grow up, I black
When I go in Sun, I black
When I scared, I black
When I sick, I black
And when I die, I still black
And you white fellow
When you born, you pink
When you grow up, you white
When you go in sun, you red
When you cold, you blue
When you scared, you yellow
When you sick, you green
And when you die, you grey
And you calling me colored??
A Lesson in Art: “Guernica”
B Class students got the chance to take a look at Picasso’s famous painting. They were awe-stricken at the pain and despair that overflows the painting. Some were able to discern that small flower at the bottom of the painting – a ray of hope?!
Guernica is a mural-sized oil painting on canvas by Spanish artist Pablo Picasso completed by June 1937. The painting, which uses a palette of gray, black, and white, is regarded by many art critics as one of the most moving and powerful anti-war paintings in history. The large mural shows the suffering of people, animals, and buildings wrenched by violence and chaos. The painting is believed to be a response to the bombing of Guernica, a Basque Country village in northern Spain, by German and Italian warplanes at the request of the Spanish Nationalists. Upon completion, Guernica was displayed around the world in a brief tour, becoming famous and widely acclaimed, and believed to have helped bring worldwide attention to the Spanish Civil War.
