In the English classroom, in the framework of the project “On War & Peace”, we watched Antonio Guterres, the UN Secretary General, stating his remarks on the situation in the Middle East, including the Palestinian question – Security Council, 9451st on 24th October, 2023. Within the same framework, “On War & Peace”, our sophomore students worked on the Greek version of the book ‘Monologues across the Aegean Sea’ which is published by the Greek National Network for Theatre in Education, under the auspices of UNHCR, and re-created some of these refugee stories of unaccompanied minors, as were narrated by them, in English.

A common repercussion of a war is poor education, if any, for school aged minors. Some students of the sophomore year did some research on the countries where the right to education is restricted as a direct aftermath of war or as a result of political decisions, religious ideologies or geographical restrictions. In the same framework, students responded with an Action Plan, as a group project work, on how to best integrate a group of refugees in our town or neighbourhood, referring to the number of people that can be successfully integrated, the kind of entrepreneurship that can be developed, the ways our school can help and the potential benefits for local community, following the model of Tilos island, as illustrated in the specific unit “A refugee’s dreamland”.
Within the same framework, in a simulation digital task, aiming at cultivating empathy, students were asked to imagine they are fleeing Syria for Europe as refugees, using the BBC interactive application Syrian Journey: Choose your own escape route – BBC News and describe their escape route.
