23rd Kindergarten of Larissa, Greece. Erasmus KA2 activities.

With the launch of this year’s 23rd Kindergarten in Larissa, it is going to implement a European Erasmus + School Education program. The school’s pedagogical team is the coordinator and creator of the program entitled “Prevention is better than Cure, as Hippocrates said.” The project was approved, after evaluation by the Greek State Scholarship Foundation (IKY), in co-operation with the European Union for the years 2019-2021 and is funded by the European Union. The activities were carefully designed to achieve the objectives of the program.

Overall coordination of the whole project is provided by the Head of the Kindergarten, Mrs. Anthony Elizabeth, and the contact person is kindergarten Ms. Nikolaidou Simela.

The project, entitled “Prevention is better than Cure, as Hippocrates said”, focuses on healthy eating, exercise and “wellbeing”. It is aimed at preschool and elementary school students and its main objective is to improve and promote the mental, physical health and social well-being of students. At the core of the program is the idea that in nature human beings can seek ways of prevention and treatment and form positive attitudes towards the environment and sustainability. This will be achieved by participating in actions with specific objectives, such as understanding the concept of “Health” and the value of healthy eating, through the exploration of Hippocratic theory.
It is a program that gives educators and students from Italy, Spain, Lithuania, Latvia and Greece (23rd Kindergarten – 5th Kindergarten) the opportunity to exchange views, share ideas and innovative teaching methods in common, interaction, contact with the culture and culture of the peoples of Europe but also acquaintance with different educational systems. A common vision of all partners is the adoption of standards, attitudes and habits that lead to well-being. In addition, fostering environmental awareness among students, and establishing their European identity are the primary goals of the project.
The results of the project will hopefully have long-term benefits for students to decide and act consciously on issues affecting their health, translating into practice the wise sayings of the ancient Greek healer and philosopher Hippocrates, “Kallion the Cure” “Your food is your medicine and your medicine is your food.”
They will learn about the habits and behaviors of children in each partner country, family nutrition (parents, grandparents) in the past, compared to those that are shaped today. Active participation and cooperation among partner school children will improve their social skills, promoting mutual respect, responsibility and interaction, while enhancing European identity.

There is an urgent need for the younger generation to recognize and assimilate beneficial patterns and attitudes that will positively affect the quality of life throughout its life. As early school age is best suited to assimilate habits and patterns, we believe this task will have a positive impact on students in this direction.

Η παιδαγωγική ομάδα του σχολείου είναι ο συντονιστής και δημιουργός του προγράμματος  με τίτλο «Prevention is better than Cure, as Hippocrates said».

Το έργο με τίτλο «Prevention is better than Cure, as Hippocrates said», έχει ως άξονα τη υγιεινή διατροφή,  την άσκηση και το «ευ ζην».

The children of the 23 kindergartens in Larissa created the title of the program, which is also a saying of Hippocrates.

The 23rd kindergarten is located in Larissa, Greece. There are 33 pupils aged 4-5 years old and it
consists of 3 teachers. It applies a multi-purpose curriculum, which is taught through modern
teaching methods. The Collaborative Teaching Method, the Interdisciplinary Approach to
Knowledge, the Experiential Learning and the Playful Method of Teaching are based on the childcentered
learning model, which places the child at the center of the educational process. It gives the
student the opportunity to develop, through play, his/her social, mental and sensory skills such as
communication, collaboration, movement and speech. ICT and the Art in Education also help kids to
develop on many fundamental levels. Our school has been awarded with the eTwinning School Label
2019-20. This is a great achievement by the eTwinning team in our school! We have dealt with
healthy eating in recent years, as the Hippocrates lived and died in Larissa. He dealt with herbs and
healthy eating habits. We also implement eΤwinning programs in relation to dietary habits and
exercise from antiquity to the present. There are 2 key teachers to run the project: the headmaster
named Antoniou Elisavet (MEd and Post-education) and the teacher named Samela Nikolaidou
(Post-education). Both are members of the association “The Hippocrates in Larissa”. They have
participated in the event organized by the Hippocrates Club: From Hippocrates to the famous sports
events. They have attended the seminar “Heritage of Taste”. The initiative aims at studying cultural
practices related to nutrition and health through interviews with the elderly. The 23rd Kindergarten
has been awarded twinners. Mrs Antoniou E. has been awarded with 2 quality labels and has
attended 115 hours of training sessions with topics: Nutrition and Particular Activity in Childhood and
Essential Nutrition Issues and implements T4Europe and eTwinning programs. Mrs Nikolaidou S.
has also been awarded with a quality label. Both of them are involved in healthy nutrition projects,
such as “The Hippocrates in Larissa”, 2015-16, ID 117888 and 2016-17 “Cultural Routes”, ID
133534. Students knew the effect of Hippocrates’ s work in modern medicine, the use of herbs,
nutrition, sport. In 2017-18 they participated in the project “From the Sculpture River to the
Hippocratic Monument in Larissa”, ID 166983. This year we are running 2 programs on healthy
lifestyle issues. The 1st is entitled “The Importance of Nutrition and Exercise from the Age of
Hippocrates to Today”, ID 180268. The aim is to understand the eating habits of the Ancient Greeks,
learning through Hippocrates’ theory, the importance of nutrition and exercise. The 2nd project is
entitled “We produce naturally, Consume in a healthy way”, ID 185475. It is a project that gives
children the opportunity to produce and consume their own organic foods.

Learning by playing like the Ancient Greeks

As part of the Erasmus + KA2 program «Prevention is better than cure, as Hippocrates said» we visited the amazing and interactive exhibition of the Museum of Ancient Greek Technology Costas Kotsani.
The children of the 23rd Kindergarten of Larissa and the 5th Kindergarten of Farsalos had the unique opportunity to get acquainted with a relatively unknown aspect of ancient Greek culture through the exhibition «Hi-Tech Inventions of Ancient Greeks» which includes about 100 selected exhibits and the selected artist Filonos’ cinema to the Iron Puppet Theater and from Ktibi’s automatic hydraulic watch to the Antikythera Mechanism.
The toddlers became familiar with the games of the Ancient Greeks and did sport activities in the Museum’s courtyard.

“A painting….a story”

Creating our botanical garden

As part of the Erasmus 2019-21 program “Prevention is better than Cure, as Hippocrates said” we made flower beds in our school yard in a triangle, a square and a rectangle. We smelled the herbs, learned the names, separated them into batches, sculpted the soil and planted them. Then we watered them, wrote down their names and their healing properties in Greek and English and await their development ……

ERASMUS KA229. 23rd Kindergarten of Larisa,Greece -“The Nature Shop”

Chamomile party

Today we boiled chamomile and had a party with herbs. Our school smelled of chamomile, which we drank with pleasure, but also to soften our throats and protect us from the cold.

We observed the steam coming out of the pan and wondered where all this steam was going. The children responded to the clouds, to the sky, it falls with the rain …. It was followed by a play with rain and clouds. We learn about the evaporation of liquids.

Medicinal and aromatic herbs.

We initially detect children’s knowledge and tell us what herbs they know. Then we decide to bring information from some herbs and a bag with that particular herb.

Then we present them with the help of Hippocrates and learn their healing properties. We do herbal paintings.

We play and smell the herbs.

We paint the herbs on paper and on the computer.

“The Shop of Nature”

We made the price list, we wrote and painted the sign, we created the backdrop and our shop is ready…

We make olive oil cake with herbs

Today we mixed, weighed, kneaded, and wrote the ingredients and steps of the recipe to make a herbal cake with olives.

Our actions continue, providing new knowledge and experiences to our students.

Our school was visited today by Mrs Anastasia, an agronomist who spoke to the children about the herbal and bee relationship, about Hippocrates’ herbs and their healing properties. Great presentation and valuable knowledge we gained!

Then she helped the children prepare herbal and candle wax while observing the phenomenon of melting and setting.

“Herbs many years old”

How have people used herbs in the old days? where did they find them? what diseases did they cure? what herbs did they know? These and many other questions from the children were answered by Ms. Maria, our school’s grandmother, who visited the kindergarten and told the children of her childhood experiences of herbal use. He talked to the students about how they were collected in Kissavos, the herbalists who were collecting herbs in the mountains, even about ” Zarapuni ”, a herb growing in Kissavos and used in cooking. The children listened with great interest to the story , and thanked Mrs Maria for giving her a beautiful poster.

In the end they enjoyed a delicious home made pie, made by Mrs Maria, because as Hippocrates has taught us, healthy eating is very important !!! Thank you very much Mrs Maria for the nice story she gave us and of course for offering the pie to the kids!

The 23rd Kindergarten in the Medical School of the city
As part of the Erasmus + program “Prevention is better than cure, as Hippocrates said,” young students in the 23rd kindergarten continue their experiential activities, this time with their parents. They visited the Medical School of our city where they had the opportunity to watch the fossils of prehistoric animals found on the banks of the Pinios and to be exposed on campus and to attend the library and the patio where they watched the film for the first doctors. Then, along with the parents, the herbs were planted in a specially designed outdoor area. The plants have been carved and watered by teachers and children, an energy that fills everyone with joy and has proven that parent-teacher collaboration can be very creative!

“Riddles with herbsErasmus + KA229”
