The fundamental purpose of the proposal is the defense, improvement and promotion of mental, physical health and social well-being of the students, by cultivating healthy eating habits, developing basic motor skills and fitness of infants and the development of social skills and critical thinking.
Additionally, we seek to denature in act the ancient Greek’s words therapist and philosopher Hippocrates, “Prevention is better then Cure”, “Your Food is your Medicine and your Medicine is your
Food”.
Hippocrates constitutes an integral part of the cultural heritage and history of our country since he lived for many years in Larissa, where he died. He has offered the most to healing and treatment of diseases and epidemics by using herbs. With his therapies he was recognized as “Father of Medicine” whilehe was using plants, because he deeply believed in the power of nature.
From the plants he had chosen, many of them constitute the basis of modern medicines. From antiquity to nowadays, different cultures have discovered many common points and various uses for herbs and essential oils. Myths, legends, tradition and medicine reflect this knowledge.
In a changing world, with a negative impact on health, the concept of Hippocratic words is a top priority. The main objective of the program is the students to understand that in nature human can look for alternative ways of prevention and treatment and to form positive attitudes towards the environment and sustainability.
In recent years, the European Union, the United States, the World Health Organization contribute to the wider dissemination of active programs for the improvement of the population’s nutrition. The
European Union seeks to achieve a high level of health protection through all European policies and activities. Community policy on health issues aims to improve public health, prevent diseases and
dangers against health, including the risks associated with the way of the Europeans’ living.
Research data suggest that adoption of the nutritional instructions depicted on the Mediterranean Diet Pyramid has as a result the reduction of the risk of developing diseases (such as cardiovascular
diseases, obesity, diabetes). Serious health problems that children face are related to poor nutritional habits and lack of exercise leading to obesity. Lastly our culture has changed, having as a result children to be involved more often in sedentary activities, such as television and static games. The school must cultivate in children basic motor skills and make them realize the value of exercise. It is very important to create healthy adults who love sports and have included it in the their life as an integral part (Ratliffe, 1994).

We are trying to use international resources, creative thinking and passion into action with our young students. We have more than 500 young students (from 1,5 till 7, years old), and more than 50 teachers. We are very “close” to our parents, we have every day communication. Parents help us to go sightseeing, make healthy picnics and attend swimming lessons. Nowadays we need to make a lot of changes in our (Latvian) educational system. We need to be more friendly to our students, parents and our environment. We need to learn more, than one language and we need to know more cultures, and teach culture differences to our young students. We like to have open air classes, have competitions (students vs parents or students vs teachers) and we need to find more ideas for that!
We strongly believe in the active aging and in the lifelong learning for all, because of it we want to participate in Erasmus project! To get new ideas and knowledge. To show our teachers how work kindergartens in Europe. We have 4 keys persons for the project: Ineta Aroniete – headteacher, healthy eating specialist. She is very positive and strong in IT. The Ave Maria Schools of Granada have been educating and training generations of students for more than 128 years. The illusion of our educational community is continue growing and adapting to the needs of our complex and actual society. Today we work in it almost 400 people between teachers and educational staff with a great vocation and commitment. From our platform www.amgr.es we want to show all the information and activities that are constantly being carried out
in our 8 schools. In addition to the stages of kindergarden, primary and secundary, we have two residences, a private language school, all VET degrees, Special Education. The mail goal of our School is: To develop all the human potential of each boy and girl, promoting their affective, social, intellectual, moral and religious growth, through a united effort of the whole school community; in an attitude of deep love and respect for the person, the family and society. This is the reason why we want our students to be trained to work for themselves, acquiring a personal method of study; we try to create a concern for culture, investigation, research and, through them, that they know how to resolve the problems that life poses them; we will promote the spirit of creativity, and we respect and cultivate the originality of each student who has to mature their personality in a differentiated way.
Our founder the priest Andres Manjón must be considered as one of the precursors of the “Active School”, along with other theorists such as Pestalozzi or María Montessori, in which the activity, movement and intuition of the student are essential for their physical and intellectual development. An essential characteristic of the Active School are its cheerful, dynamic and boisterous classrooms.
This is a consequence of the creative and productive work in which the students have as much participation like the teacher. In this type of school, deductive or inductive analytical procedures prevail for the cognitive development of children. Andrés Manjón carries out a methodology in which the teaching-learning process of the student is produced through play, outdoors and in interaction with nature. This type of school we have to understand it as a reaction to the classic school, memory and gloomy that lived in his home school. We can conclude that the pedagogy of the canon of Granada is summarized in four basic pillars: Education must be fun, teaching must be active,
teaching must be rural, teaching must be methodical.
Ave Maria Esparraguera school has 100 students and 23 teachers. It aims to be a quality academic and professional reference in Granada
that aspires to: Teamwork and coordination of all teachers and non-teaching staff seeking the quality of teaching. A coexistence characterized by trust, respect, dialogue and family atmosphere. An
individualized education that attends to the diversity of educational situations and to each student according to their needs, ability, motivation.

Project details

With the launch of this year’s 23rd Kindergarten in Larissa, it is going to implement a European Erasmus + School Education program. The school’s pedagogical team is the coordinator and creator of the program entitled “Prevention is better than Cure, as Hippocrates said.” Project ID: 2019-1-EL01-KA229-062931, The project was approved, after evaluation by the Greek State Scholarship Foundation (IKY), in co-operation with the European Union for the years 2019-2022 and is funded by the European Union. The activities were carefully designed to achieve the objectives of the program.
Overall coordination of the whole project is provided by the Head of the Kindergarten, Mrs. Antoniou Elisavet, and the contact person is kindergarten Mrs. Nikolaidou Samela.
The project, entitled “Prevention is better than Cure, as Hippocrates said”, Project ID: 2019-1-EL01-KA229-062931, focuses on healthy eating, exercise and “wellbeing”. It is aimed at preschool and elementary school students and its main objective is to improve and promote the mental, physical health and social well-being of students. At the core of the program is the idea that in nature human beings can seek ways of prevention and treatment and form positive attitudes towards the environment and sustainability. This will be achieved by participating in actions with specific objectives, such as understanding the concept of “Health” and the value of healthy eating, through the exploration of Hippocratic theory.
It is a program that gives educators and students from Italy, Spain, Lithuania, Latvia and Greece (23rd Kindergarten – 5th Kindergarten) the opportunity to exchange views, share ideas and innovative teaching methods in common, interaction, contact with the culture and culture of the peoples of Europe but also acquaintance with different educational systems. A common vision of all partners is the adoption of standards, attitudes and habits that lead to well-being. In addition, fostering environmental awareness among students, and establishing their European identity are the primary goals of the project.
The results of the project will hopefully have long-term benefits for students to decide and act consciously on issues affecting their health, translating into practice the wise sayings of the ancient Greek healer and philosopher Hippocrates, “Prevention is better than Cure” “Your food is your medicine and your medicine is your food.”
They will learn about the habits and behaviors of children in each partner country, family nutrition (parents, grandparents) in the past, compared to those that are shaped today. Active participation and cooperation among partner school children will improve their social skills, promoting mutual respect, responsibility and interaction, while enhancing European identity.
There is an urgent need for the younger generation to recognize and assimilate beneficial patterns and attitudes that will positively affect the quality of life throughout its life. As early school age is best suited to assimilate habits and patterns, we believe this task will have a positive impact on students in this direction.
Η παιδαγωγική ομάδα του σχολείου είναι ο συντονιστής και δημιουργός του προγράμματος με τίτλο «Prevention is better than Cure, as Hippocrates said».
Το έργο με τίτλο «Prevention is better than Cure, as Hippocrates said», Project ID: 2019-1-EL01-KA229-062931 έχει ως άξονα τη υγιεινή διατροφή, την άσκηση και το «ευ ζην».

The children of the 23 kindergartens in Larissa created the title of the program, which is also a saying of Hippocrates.
The 23rd kindergarten is located in Larissa, Greece. There are 33 pupils aged 4-5 years old and it
consists of 3 teachers. It applies a multi-purpose curriculum, which is taught through modern
teaching methods. The Collaborative Teaching Method, the Interdisciplinary Approach to
Knowledge, the Experiential Learning and the Playful Method of Teaching are based on the childcentered
learning model, which places the child at the center of the educational process. It gives the
student the opportunity to develop, through play, his/her social, mental and sensory skills such as
communication, collaboration, movement and speech. ICT and the Art in Education also help kids to
develop on many fundamental levels. Our school has been awarded with the eTwinning School Label
2019-20. This is a great achievement by the eTwinning team in our school! We have dealt with
healthy eating in recent years, as the Hippocrates lived and died in Larissa. He dealt with herbs and
healthy eating habits. We also implement eΤwinning programs in relation to dietary habits and
exercise from antiquity to the present. There are 2 key teachers to run the project: the headmaster
named Antoniou Elisavet (MEd and Post-education) and the teacher named Samela Nikolaidou
(Post-education). Both are members of the association “The Hippocrates in Larissa”. They have
participated in the event organized by the Hippocrates Club: From Hippocrates to the famous sports
events. They have attended the seminar “Heritage of Taste”. The initiative aims at studying cultural
practices related to nutrition and health through interviews with the elderly. The 23rd Kindergarten
has been awarded twinners. Mrs Antoniou E. has been awarded with 2 quality labels and has
attended 115 hours of training sessions with topics: Nutrition and Particular Activity in Childhood and
Essential Nutrition Issues and implements T4Europe and eTwinning programs. Mrs Nikolaidou S.
has also been awarded with a quality label. Both of them are involved in healthy nutrition projects,
such as “The Hippocrates in Larissa”, 2015-16, ID 117888 and 2016-17 “Cultural Routes”, ID
133534. Students knew the effect of Hippocrates’ s work in modern medicine, the use of herbs,
nutrition, sport. In 2017-18 they participated in the project “From the Sculpture River to the
Hippocratic Monument in Larissa”, ID 166983. This year we are running 2 programs on healthy
lifestyle issues. The 1st is entitled “The Importance of Nutrition and Exercise from the Age of
Hippocrates to Today”, ID 180268. The aim is to understand the eating habits of the Ancient Greeks,
learning through Hippocrates’ theory, the importance of nutrition and exercise. The 2nd project is
entitled “We produce naturally, Consume in a healthy way”, ID 185475. It is a project that gives
children the opportunity to produce and consume their own organic foods.
Learning by playing like the Ancient Greeks
As part of the Erasmus + KA2 program «Prevention is better than cure, as Hippocrates said» we visited the amazing and interactive exhibition of the Museum of Ancient Greek Technology Costas Kotsani.
The children of the 23rd Kindergarten of Larissa and the 5th Kindergarten of Farsalos had the unique opportunity to get acquainted with a relatively unknown aspect of ancient Greek culture through the exhibition «Hi-Tech Inventions of Ancient Greeks» which includes about 100 selected exhibits and the selected artist Filonos’ cinema to the Iron Puppet Theater and from Ktibi’s automatic hydraulic watch to the Antikythera Mechanism.
The toddlers became familiar with the games of the Ancient Greeks and did sport activities in the Museum’s courtyard.

Creating our botanical garden
As part of the Erasmus 2019-21 program “Prevention is better than Cure, as Hippocrates said” we made flower beds in our school yard in a triangle, a square and a rectangle. We smelled the herbs, learned the names, separated them into batches, sculpted the soil and planted them. Then we watered them, wrote down their names and their healing properties in Greek and English and await their development ……

Today we boiled chamomile and had a party with herbs. Our school smelled of chamomile, which we drank with pleasure, but also to soften our throats and protect us from the cold.
We observed the steam coming out of the pan and wondered where all this steam was going. The children responded to the clouds, to the sky, it falls with the rain …. It was followed by a play with rain and clouds. We learn about the evaporation of liquids.
Medicinal and aromatic herbs.
We initially detect children’s knowledge and tell us what herbs they know. Then we decide to bring information from some herbs and a bag with that particular herb.
Then we present them with the help of Hippocrates and learn their healing properties. We do herbal paintings.
We play and smell the herbs.
We paint the herbs on paper and on the computer.
“The Shop of Nature”
We made the price list, we wrote and painted the sign, we created the backdrop and our shop is ready…
We make olive oil cake with herbs
Today we mixed, weighed, kneaded, and wrote the ingredients and steps of the recipe to make a herbal cake with olives.
Our actions continue, providing new knowledge and experiences to our students.
Our school was visited today by Mrs Anastasia, an agronomist who spoke to the children about the herbal and bee relationship, about Hippocrates’ herbs and their healing properties. Great presentation and valuable knowledge we gained!

Then she helped the children prepare herbal and candle wax while observing the phenomenon of melting and setting.

How have people used herbs in the old days? where did they find them? what diseases did they cure? what herbs did they know? These and many other questions from the children were answered by Ms. Maria, our school’s grandmother, who visited the kindergarten and told the children of her childhood experiences of herbal use. He talked to the students about how they were collected in Kissavos, the herbalists who were collecting herbs in the mountains, even about ” Zarapuni ”, a herb growing in Kissavos and used in cooking. The children listened with great interest to the story , and thanked Mrs Maria for giving her a beautiful poster.
In the end they enjoyed a delicious home made pie, made by Mrs Maria, because as Hippocrates has taught us, healthy eating is very important !!! Thank you very much Mrs Maria for the nice story she gave us and of course for offering the pie to the kids!
