Below, we present the phonetic analogies between the greek alphabet and the latin one, in order to help our visitors from all the world  to read at least the names of ours and, why not, to learn something more.

The Greek (Hellenic) Alphabet has 24 letters, that are:

Α, α  ( alpha) – (read  A, a  as in the word cut )

Β, β  (Vita) – (read V, v)

Γ, γ  (γama) – (read as in the words you, yes, etc)

Δ, δ  (δelta) – (read as in the words though, that, etc)

Ε, ε   (epsilon) – (read as in the words effort, energy, etc)

Ζ, ζ  (zita) – (read as Z, z)

Η, η (ηta) – (read as /i/ e.g. this)

Θ, θ  (θita) – (read as in the words thorough, theoretical, etc)

I, i  (yiota) – (read as /i/ e.g. this)

Κ, κ (kapa) – (read as /k/ e.g. kind)

Λ, λ (lamvδa) – (read as L, l)

Μ, μ (mi) – (read as M, m)

Ν, ν (ni) – (read as N, n)

Ξ, ξ (ksi) – (read as /ks/ e.g. expedition, ecstasy, etc) 

O, o (omikron) – (read as /o/ O,o)

Π, π (pi) – (read as /p/ P,p)

Ρ, ρ (ro) – (read as /r/ R, r)

Σ, σ, ς (siγma) – (read as /s/ S, s) (ς in the ending of the words)

Τ, τ (taf) – (read as /t/ T, t)

Υ, υ (ipsilon) – (read as /i/ e.g. this)

Φ, φ (fi) – (read as /f/ e.g. fear, fossil, fat, etc)

Χ, χ (hi) – (read as in the words hint, how, hence, etc)

Ψ, ψ (psi) – (read as in the words epsilon, capsule, etc)

Ω, ω (omeγα) – (read as /o/)

We also use the following diphthongs (or two-digit vowels):

Ει, ει (read as /i/ the same as Ι, ι – Η, η – Υ, υ )

Οι, οι (read as /i/ the same as Ι, ι – Η, η – Υ, υ )

Υι, υι (read as /i/the same as Ι, ι – Η, η – Υ, υ , but it’s not used any more- old-fashioned)

Αι, αι (read as /e/ the same as Ε,ε)

Ου, ου (read as in the words out, you, how, etc)

Αυ, αυ (read as either /af/ or /av/)

Ευ, ευ (read as either /ef/ or /ev/

Ηυ, ηυ (read as either /if/ or /iv/ – not so used/old-fashioned)

When we want to read them separately, we use diaeresis marks ¨, e.g αϊ=ai not e, etc)

All the other phthongs are formed with letter combinations, e.g. στρ=str, φθ=phth, σπ=sp, etc
