China coronavirus heightens global alarm (24th January, 2020)

Nations around the world are preparing for a possible major outbreak of a new deadly virus. The coronavirus, which started in the Chinese city of Wuhan, has already killed 17 people. It has spread to the USA, Japan, Korea and Thailand. More than 540 people have caught the virus and are in hospital. The World Health Organization (WHO) is meeting to decide whether the outbreak is a global health emergency. China is urging people not to panic ahead of the Chinese New Year next week. Millions of Chinese will be travelling across the country to spend the holiday season with their families. Meanwhile, the city of Wuhan has suspended its public transport systems to help stop the spread of the virus.

 

The new coronavirus is suspected to have come from illegally traded animals in a Wuhan market. The virus mutated and spread from an animal to a human. There are fears it could mutate and spread further. Scientists say the virus is contagious and can be passed from person to person through the air. Dr Linfa Wang, a virologist at the Duke-National University of Singapore, said the new coronavirus is in the same family as SARS, but it’s different from SARS. He said people needed to look for pneumonia-like symptoms, such as fever, cough and difficulty breathing. Fu Ning, a 36-year-old woman from Beijing, said: “I feel fearful because there’s no cure for the virus.”

10 things you can do to improve your English

Have a read of the below list and we are sure you will find a lot of helpful tips to improve your English!

  1. Don’t be afraid to make mistakes. Be confident. People can only correct your mistakes when they hear you make them.
  2. Surround yourself in English. Put yourself in an all English speaking environment where you can learn passively. The best way to learn is through speaking.
  3. Practise every day. Make yourself a study plan. Decide how much time a week you are going to spend studying and stick to it. Establish a routine.
  4. Tell your family and friends about your study plan. Get them to push you to study and also don’t let them interrupt you.
  5. Practise the 4 core skills: reading, writing, speaking and listening. They all need to be worked on for you to improve.
  6. Keep a notebook of new words you learn. Use them in sentences and try to say them at least 3 times when you speak.
  7. Do a lesson at least once a day.
  8. Memorisation of lists is one of the most common ways of learning vocabulary for a test. It’s only a good exercise for short term studying because you often do not retain the information that you have learned for a test.
  9. Use your body clock. If you’re not a morning person, study in the afternoon.
  10. You will find words easier to remember if you try to remember an example sentence using that word rather the word on its own.

TREAT OR TRICK?

Με αφορμή το Ηalloween οι μαθητές και οι μαθήτριες της της  Α’ και Β’ Λυκείου  σκάλισαν κολοκύθα (Jack o’ lantern) και  έδωσαν τρομακτικά χαρακτηριστικά όπως επιβάλλει το έθιμο  που αφορούσαν αυτή την ημέρα. Στόχος αυτής της δράσης ήταν αφενός να γνωρίσουν οι μαθητές την ευρωπαϊκή παράδοση και αφετέρου να καλλιεργήσουν την αγγλική γλώσσα μέσα από βιωματικές διαδικασίες.

Trick or Treat? Φάρσα ή κέρασμα; Εσείς διαλέγετε!!!!

Το Halloween είναι μια γιορτή που δε γιορτάζεται στη χώρα μας αλλά σε άλλες χώρες του κόσμου, την νύχτα της 31ης Οκτωβρίου. Τα μικρά παιδιά μεταμφιέζονται κατά κανόνα σε κάτι «τρομακτικό», σε μάγισσες και ξωτικά και γυρνούν από σπίτι σε σπίτι λέγοντας «Trick Or Treat?» (φάρσα ή κέρασμα;). Oι ιδιοκτήτες τους προσφέρουν γλυκίσματα και καραμέλες. Αν αυτό δεν συμβεί, τότε τα παιδιά τους κάνουν μια φάρσα (πχ. βάζουν αφρό στην πόρτα τους, πετούνε αυγά ή γεμίζουν τον κήπο με χαρτιά).

Οι ρίζες του Halloween λέγεται πως ξεκινούν από τη γιορτή Samhain, η οποία γιορταζόταν αρχικά από τους Κέλτες στην Ιρλανδία και στη Βρετανία, και έπειτα έφτασε στην Αμερική. Σήμερα γιορτάζεται κυρίως στις ΗΠΑ και στον Καναδά, ενώ πάρτι γίνονται σε πολλές χώρες  μέχρι και στην Ελλάδα τα τελευταία χρόνια γίνονται σχετικά πάρτι.

Ετυμολογικά η λέξη Halloween προέρχεται από το All-hallow-even και δηλώνει την παραμονή (eve) της γιορτής των Αγίων Πάντων (All Hallows Day – All Saints Day). που είναι 1η Νοεμβρίου.  Οι ρίζες της γιορτής λέγεται ότι βρίσκονται σε κέλτικες παραδόσεις, και συγκεκριμένα στους εορτασμούς του Samhain, που στα παλιά ιρλανδικά σημαίνει «τέλος του καλοκαιριού». Οι Κέλτες την 31η Οκτωβρίου γιόρταζαν το τέλος της περιόδου της συγκομιδής και την αρχή του χειμώνα.

Η παράδοση λέει ότι τη συγκεκριμένη μέρα ερχόμαστε πιο κοντά με τον «άλλο κόσμο», ότι μπορούμε να έρθουμε σε επαφή με πνεύματα και νεκρούς.   Τα χρώματα που συνδέονται με τη γιορτή είναι το πορτοκαλί και το μαύρο. Το πορτοκαλί συμβολίζει τη φθινοπωρινή σοδειά και το μαύρο τον θάνατο και γενικά, τον «άλλο κόσμο».

 Τα φαναράκια, τα οποία λέγονται «jack-o-lanterns», είναι αναπόσπαστο στοιχείο των εορτασμών και χρησιμοποιούνται για να διώχνουν, υποτίθεται, μακριά τα κακά πνεύματα που, όπως είπαμε, πιστεύεται πως τη συγκεκριμένη ημέρα είναι ιδιαίτερα ενεργά.

Πολλές παραδόσεις θεωρούν την ημέρα αυτή μία από τις ελάχιστες μέρες που μπορεί να επιτευχθεί επαφή με τον… κόσμο των πνευμάτων και αυτήν τη μέρα η μαγεία… πιάνει! Το έθιμο της κολοκύθας έχει ρίζες από έναν παλιό Ιρλανδικό μύθο, αυτόν του τσιγγούνη Τζακ.

Black Friday

Black Friday is the day following Thanksgiving Day in the United States (the fourth Thursday of November).it has been regarded as the beginning of the Christmas shopping season in the US, and most major retailers open very early (and more recently during overnight hours) and offer promotional sales.

Black Friday also occurs in the United Kingdom. One of the UK’s first black Friday events took place in 2003 in Staples Corner London, hosted by UK retailer Currys.

ΚΛΕΙΩ, ΜΙΑ ΥΠΕΡΟΧΗ ΤΑΙΝΙΑ ΜΙΚΡΟΥ ΜΗΚΟΥΣ ΑΠΟ ΤΟ ΓΥΜΝΑΣΙΟ ΟΙΧΑΛΙΑΣ ΤΡΙΚΑΛΩΝ. ΒΓΑΛΤΕ ΠΡΟΧΕΙΡΑ ΚΑΙ …ΧΑΡΤΟΜΑΝΤΗΛΑ.

Το βραβείο καλύτερης ταινίας στη δευτεροβάθμια εκπαίδευση απέσπασε το 2ο Γυμνάσιο Οιχαλίας Τρικάλων με την ταινία “Κλειώ”.

Πρόσφατα μάλιστα το συγκεκριμένο σχολείο είχε τιμηθεί και με το Α’ βραβείο στο 5ο Νεανικό Φεστιβάλ Ταινιών Μικρού Μήκους Λάρισας Artfools (Ελληνικό – Διεθνές).

Η εκδήλωση της απονομής των βραβείων έγινε την Τετάρτη στο υπουργείο Παιδείας, όπου βραβεύτηκαν τα σχολεία που διακρίθηκαν στον 3ο Πανελλήνιο Μαθητικό Διαγωνισμό Ταινιών Μικρού Μήκους.

“Δεν είμαστε τεμπέληδες, είμαστε δημιουργικοί και αυτό το απέδειξε η ποιοτική ταινία μας, που με ελάχιστα μέσα και μία δανική κάμερα καταφέραμε να τη δημιουργήσουμε αποσπώντας τον θαυμασμό. Τα πουλιά δεν κελαηδούν σε σπηλιές” είπε κατά τη διάρκεια της απονομής η μαθήτρια Άννα – Μαρία Σακελλαρίου, μία από τους συντελεστές της ταινίας “Κλειώ” του γυμνασίου Οιχαλίας Τρικάλων.

Στη τελετή βράβευσης, παρουσία του υπουργού Παιδείας Κωνσταντίνου Αρβανιτόπουλου, του αναπληρωτή υπουργού Πολιτισμού Κώστα Τζαβάρα και του υφυπουργού Παιδείας Θόδωρου Παπαθεοδώρου, η “Κλειώ” συγκίνησε το κοινό και απέσπασε ένα θερμότατο χειροκρότημα.

Όλα ξεκίνησαν όταν ο καθηγητής, Θωμάς Φωτόπουλος, έδωσε το έναυσμα.

Η Άννα-Μαρία Σακελλαρίου (μαθήτρια) έγραψε το σενάριο και …μετονομάζεται σε “Κλειώ”.

Η παρέα συγκεντρώνεται. Όλοι ενθουσιάζονται με το ενδεχόμενο. Δύο ερασιτεχνικές κάμερες, ένα μπουμ (μικρόφωνο) και τα γυρίσματα αρχίζουν.

Η σκηνοθετική επιμέλεια του κ. Φωτόπουλου και η καθοδήγησή του, αλλά και το μεράκι των μαθητών δίνουν ένα ιδιαίτερο καλλιτεχνικό αποτέλεσμα.

Οι καθηγητές και οι μαθητές που συμμετείχαν σε αυτό το εγχείρημα κατάφεραν, με πενιχρά μέσα, να γυρίσουν την ταινία και να αναδείξουν, μέσα από αυτήν, θέματα όπως η μετανάστευση, η φιλία, η τρίτη ηλικία.

Η ταινία πραγματεύεται τη ζωή μιας μαθήτριας, της Κλειούς, που ζει με τη γιαγιά της, καθώς οι γονείς της είναι μετανάστες στη Γερμανία. Αν και πρόκειται για ταινία μικρής διάρκειας, ζεις έντονα τις συναισθηματικές διακυμάνσεις που βιώνει η Κλειώ στο σχολικό περιβάλλον, αλλά και στην καθημερινότητά της, το δυνατό συναίσθημα της φιλίας, τη μοναξιά, την εγκατάλειψη, την αγάπη.

Η καταπληκτική φυσιογνωμία της γιαγιάς Βαγγελιώς “ξεδιπλώνει” συναισθήματα, ενώ περνάει και το μήνυμα της στοργής προς την τρίτη ηλικία.

Η ταινία, με αγγλικούς και γερμανικούς υπότιτλους, θα συμμετάσχει σε διεθνή φεστιβάλ σε χώρες του εξωτερικού.
