The fundamental purpose of the proposal is the defense, improvement and promotion of mental, physical health and social well-being of the students, by cultivating healthy eating habits, developing basic motor skills and fitness of infants and the development of social skills and critical thinking. Additionally, we seek to denature in act the ancient Greek’s words therapist and philosopher Hippocrates, “Prevention is better then Cure”, “Your Food is your Medicine and your Medicine is your Food”. The project «Prevention is better than Cure», addressed to early years education students, is on healthy eating, exercise and well-being. Its innovation is based on the philosophy of the ancient Greek therapist Hippocrates, who acknowedged the significance of exercise – in combination with diet and other factors- for the preservation of good physical condition. In a world constantly changing causing negative effects on health, the meaning of the Hippocratic sayings is a priority.
Main purpose of this project is the improvement and promotion of mental, physical health and the social well-being of the students by participating in activities so as to understand the importance of Health and the value of healthy eating through the investigation of the Hippocratic theory. Secondary objectives are the students’ learning about herbs and to realize that Nature is the best «pharmacy»; also to understand the benefits of exercise as a means of prevention in combination with diet, the interaction with European people and the development of social skills; finally to obtain environmental consciousness and inspire students to become active European citizens.

Hippocrates constitutes an integral part of the cultural heritage and history of our country since he lived for many years in Larissa, where he died. He has offered the most to healing and treatment of diseases and epidemics by using herbs. With his therapies he was recognized as “Father of Medicine” whilehe was using plants, because he deeply believed in the power of nature.
From the plants he had chosen, many of them constitute the basis of modern medicines. From antiquity to nowadays, different cultures have discovered many common points and various uses for herbs and essential oils. Myths, legends, tradition and medicine reflect this knowledge.
In a changing world, with a negative impact on health, the concept of Hippocratic words is a top priority. The main objective of the program is the students to understand that in nature human can look for alternative ways of prevention and treatment and to form positive attitudes towards the environment and sustainability.
In recent years, the European Union, the United States, the World Health Organization contribute to the wider dissemination of active programs for the improvement of the population’s nutrition. The
European Union seeks to achieve a high level of health protection through all European policies and activities. Community policy on health issues aims to improve public health, prevent diseases and
dangers against health, including the risks associated with the way of the Europeans’ living.
Research data suggest that adoption of the nutritional instructions depicted on the Mediterranean Diet Pyramid has as a result the reduction of the risk of developing diseases (such as cardiovascular
diseases, obesity, diabetes). Serious health problems that children face are related to poor nutritional habits and lack of exercise leading to obesity. Lastly our culture has changed, having as a result children to be involved more often in sedentary activities, such as television and static games. The school must cultivate in children basic motor skills and make them realize the value of exercise. It is very important to create healthy adults who love sports and have included it in the their life as an integral part (Ratliffe, 1994).
