THE 3 R’S: REDUCE, REUSE, RECYCLE
“The 3 R’s” song by Jack Johnson is a great way to to make students remember the 3 correct steps to deal with rubbish and protect the environment from pollution. You can also ‘recycle’ some vocabulary of Unit 5 of the textbook (Αγγλικά, 5th grade), like, ‘waste, trash, reduce, reuse, recycle’ ! I attach a gap-filling exercise of the song.
LINKING WORDS
When you teach linking words (adverbs of sequence), the hilarious scene of “Mr. Bean making a sandwich” at the park during his lunch break can be a really fun way for your students. First, they will get some background ifnormation about the origin of ‘sandwich’ and then, they will be motivated to narrate the episode using linking words of sequence in the worksheet that follows.
ART TIME:STARRY NIGHT
In the Workbook of “MAGIC BOOK 1”, Unit 3, you can inspire pupils’ creativity and encourage them to express their feelings through art by supplementing the activities of the workbook with the following videos and powerpoint presentations about Vincent Van Gogh and his works.
TEACHING COLOURS AND ANIMALS
“Brown Bear, Brown Bear, What Do You See?” by Bill Martin Jr. and Eric Carle is a perfect book to use to teach or revise colours and animals. I first used it in an eTwinning project, “Let’s Read Together” , and the pupils loved it!
First, you can teach/revise colours using a presentation, like this one: COLOURS PRESENTATION- WORDS. Then, you can show a video-reading of the book : Smartkids E-library _Brown Bear Brown Bear_ by Eric Carle, followed up by the same story as a song and oral exercise.
Next, you can hand out to the pupils worksheets, such as this one: BROWN BEAR!
You can even make a hand puppet and role play the story. Have fun!
HOW TO MOTIVATE YOUR STUDENTS
Nowadays children are bombarded by numerous digital sources of information and entertainment, such as:
- TV
- iphones
- internet
So, teachers are constantly seeking for new forms of teaching methods or approaches in order to keep up to date their educational tools and to capture their students’ interest. A significant amount of teaching ideas can be found in many educatonal websites.
Some helpful online communities for educators:
(especially for English teachers) are http://www.eslprintables.com/, http://195.134.73.193/xenesglossesedu/ and http://www.education.com/ .
