Ali and Laila Al Hassan are brother and sister from Syria. Their parents worked very hard, but their life was full of poverty and fear because of the war. One day, their father joined the army, and he never came back. Their mother decided they had to leave their country to find protection and a better future.

A man, a smuggler, said he could help them cross the borders. He asked their mother to sign a contract and give him money. It was part of smuggling and trafficking, but she didn’t know.
They went on a small dinghy with many other people. Everyone wore a life jacket, but the danger was great. The waves were strong, and that night, their mother fell into the sea and disappeared.

Ali and Laila were alone. They felt pain, fear, and suffered a lot, but they didn’t give up. The next morning, a rescue boat found them and took them to a detention centre.
