Five Unexpected Benefits of Robotics in the Classroom

Student with Robot

By Aaron Maurer

As teachers, we’re well aware that STEM education is essential in preparing students for today’s world of non-stop innovation.
In my 13 years of teaching I’ve seen many curriculum fads come and go, but the use of robotics in the classroom has proven to be a consistent and surefire way to teach students the STEM skills needed to prepare them for the future job market. I’ve seen firsthand how it teaches students 21st-century skills including coding, engineering and the scientific method in a fun and engaging way.
However, there are so many other incredible things that I’ve watched my students learn in addition to STEM curriculum. Here are the top five unexpected benefits I’ve seen in students who use robotics in the classroom:
1. Robotics can be a launching pad for students to realize their passions.
By going through the process of building a robot in the classroom, students explore many different learning pathways. It’s amazing to watch students’ passions grow in subjects that they never knew they would love.
Some of my students have cultivated an interest in 3D printing and coding, and have even gone as far as to take apart household appliances because they have a new-found interest in mechanics. You can watch these students build their own learning pathways because robotics offers them an open platform where they can decide where to go with their experimentations. For teachers, a robotics curriculum naturally allows us to take an individualized approach to each student’s learning, helping to nurture their passions even further. (περισσότερα…)

Students of the 2nd daily high school of Kalymnos made this app with the humanoid robot NAO. NAO recognises in the photos (NAOmarks) the kind of the sponge and tells some general information about them.

The Emergence of Robotics in Education Education World

The learning theory of constructionism asserts that people construct mental models to understand the world around them, and that this can be achieved through activities like building, tinkering, playing with components of machines and other systems, and watching how they interact. Seymore Papert introduced this theory in the early 1980’s, and around that time, the first educational robotics program emerged, called LOGO, which he also developed. LOGO is actually a programming language he developed that was used to control robot “turtles”—to move them forward and backward a specified distance, turn right or left a specified degree, drop a pen, and draw. Summary

It was observed by all our partners during education and training that rapidly growing robotic applications in education attracted the interest and attention of the students and helped them to participate classes more effectively and more enthusiastically. Preparing today’s students requires educational systems to provide a core body of knowledge as well as a set of skills needed. At the same time the rapid growth of digital tools available increase the challenges of nowadays. The high exposure of 21st century students in web 2.0 tools, devices, and environments opens a window of new affordances, challenges, opportunities, and skills for learning/teaching and assessment. At present, „Vasile Goldiş” National College has 48 classrooms, four laboratories of informatics, one of chemistry, two of physics and two of biology, which are equipped with materials necessary for the good development of the educational act, an amphitheater , a library with over 32,000 volumes, seven cabinets for different disciplines, an area for the educational counselor, another for the computer scientist, two medical offices and one dental. The school also has two chancelleries, a student broadcasting station and a festive hall. Currently, in our school, 1342 students learn in the following structure:

  • Kindergarten – 2 groups
  • Primary education – 14 classes
  • Secondary – 12 classes
  • High school – 20 classes.
