“Recycling clothes in your area”

Did you know that clothes are recyclable? Well, now you do! It is an unmistakable fact, that by recycling your old clothes, you help our planet stay green in numerous ways. This is exactly why, as a school with a progressive and eco friendly mindset, we should have bins for recycling garments.

Initially, recycling clothes is good for our planet. Needless to say, when clothes are thrown away, they end up in landfills or worse, the ocean. It takes years for the materials used in the fabrics to break down, causing methane to escape in our atmosphere. This results in harming our air quality and planet.

What is more, it appears that the ‘’recycling bin method’’ is by far the easiest and simplest way for one to assist in green activities regarding clothing. It goes without saying that, by installing these bins near our school, more students or even locals will have a chance in doing a good deed. Everyone in our small town knows where the school is located, so it will be easier to find the bins. There is little doubt that, us students will find it far more convenient because we will be going there every day.                                                                                    Afroditi K. Let’s make the difference

Dear students,

Our class has recently done a research on the recycling bins for clothes available in nearby places. After systematical investigation, we found out that the amount of the bins in Egaleo does not satisfy the environmental requirements.

Since we belong to the school committee, we can contribute to create a cleaner and healthier environment. More specifically, the appropriate bins should be placed in busy streets, such as Iera Odos and Thivon, so that everyone can easily have access to them. Red is a vibrant and indiscreet colour for our fair-sized bins. As for the finances, both our school and the government can take care of any additional charge fees imposed.

We wholeheartedly recommend we all take action and start donating clothes in the right place, so that we sustain a safer environment throughout the world.

With appreciation,

Paraskevi L. A2

Bins for a better future

It is obvious that nowadays  recycling is the fastest way to help the environment. Most counties have many recycling bins in most of the neighborhoods but only for everyday used materials like aluminum, glass and paper. One of today’s problem causing lots of pollution in the world is the over consumption of clothes and how hard it is to find a place to recycle them. So in today’s post I will suggest some reasons why our county should put more recycling bins for clothes in our neighborhoods.

First of all, those bins should be accessible to everyone so they should be placed not only in the center of our city, that being the town hall, but all over neighborhoods and small squares next to the other recycling bins. I believe that since people have a lot of clothes to dispose today, the bins should be big enough to hold at least 5 big bags and wide enough for more capacity. In my opinion the color should be red or a very bright blue in order to catch people’s attention.

Moreover, the municipality should be able to support all of those bins without asking much from people. It would not be cheap to have all those bins placed and maintained so the big supermarkets in our area can become sponsors to make a change in cities like ours.

All in all, placing recycling bins for clothes is a solution for everyone and is the small step to start doing something positive for the environment. In my opinion these bins will help a lot of people with a lot of clothes they want to dispose and I hope one day they actually prove to be useful.                                                  Filippa A4

Bins for recycling clothing

Have you ever thought about the impact our clothes have on the environment? Fast fashion is the reason why our planet is getting more polluted year by year increasingly, as the companies are forced to produce many clothes fast, in order to service the customers. Many countries around the world have come up with several ideas of what should be done to stop that, like the bins of recycling clothing.

However, our country lacks of such bins. Like in many countries, they should be put in every shop. They should be beautifully decorated and have a sign with information, so can customers understand what they are. Furthermore, they should be big and have plenty of space for people’s clothes.

The cost of the bins is high. The ministry of environment should work with the big clothing companies, in order to organize a plan and share the cost. Donations is also a good idea. Schools, like ours for example, can raise some money for that purpose.

To sum up, I believe everyone can see that the planet needs our help. It’s time to take action and change our habits.             It’s matter of life and death.

                                                                                                                                                                             Aggeliki A3

Recycle your clothes: It is doable!

Recently there has been a lot of debate regarding the issue of recycling our old clothes. Could something like that really be an option? If you ask me, then the answer is a sure and definite yes!

REDUCE

Undoubtedly, should we start recycling old clothes, the volume of garbage ending up on landfills will be reduced. It is a way to save resources and energy, thus, contributing to the creation of a cleaner and healthier environment.

REUSE

The state, in a combined effort with the Mayor of each town, should take steps for the implementation of this project on a large scale. When it comes to my city, the bins could be put outside of every school and church. Painting them a bright red color and making them large enough to accommodate the neighborhood’s needs would be ideal. Organizing campaigns in order to raise people’s awareness about the use of such bins is also a must.

RECYCLE

All in all, in our modern society we should address this recycling concern, not like a fashion trend, but with deep awareness of its necessity.                                                                                                               Evaggelia A1

Together we can make a difference

With the moto ‘together we can make a difference’ we treat recycling issues not as a blow to fashion, but with a deep awareness of its necessity. In a modern society, people must be aware of the priority of sustainable management of all raw materials and industrially processed materials, human care, environmental protection and sustainability.

Food for thought:

In Chania there is a partial management of used clothes by various bodies [metropolises, associations,] which collect them to vulnerable social groups. It is a commendable effort, but it covers part of the clothes and shoes that can be reused while at the same time all the useless clothes are thrown in the trash. In this light, there was an immediate need to find a solution through their cooperation with DEDISA and the company RECYCOM to create a network for the collection of clothing and footwear in order to reduce the percentage that leads to waste and consequently for landfill.

This company has borne all costs related to the purchase of bins, their installation, cleaning, maintenance and replacement. It also undertakes, at no cost to DEDISA or the municipality, the collection and transport of clothing to its facilities.                                                                                                                                                  Panoraia A2

What to put in the red bins:

           Clothes and shoes, men’s, women’s and children’s

Linen, such as curtains and sheets,

                 Bags

                 Belts

Special Clothing ‘Give-away’

Do you want to contribute to our world but don’t know how to do it being that young?

There is an undisputable solution for this problem that is not going to cost a single penny!

I highly recommend that in every school there should be a recycling bin especially for clothes that students voluntarily will donate.

Initially a very convincing reason for doing this, is that these clothes could be donated to charities that give those clothes to very poor families.

Another place that will accept clothes is any factory of a clothing brand that will make new ones upcycling the old and useless clothes that a child doesn’t wear anymore.

Ultimately wearable or not clothing can be a helpful contribution. In addition, this will put a smile to everyone that will act in this positive way. There are no disadvantages in every school keeping a cloth recycling bin, so I believe action should be taken as soon as possible.                                                                                                Andy A2

RECYCLE CLOTHES

When you have clothes you no longer need and want to get rid of, the first thing you should do is sort them out and recycle them. So, in this case a very practical solution are the clothing recycling bins.

On one hand, these bins must be located outside each house, with different sizes especially for T-shirts, dresses, coats, pants, for example green for Small, red for Medium, yellow for Large and blue for XLarge sizes. On the other hand, shoes can be in other bins in black colour.

We can all raise money to help our society get improved. This will mean a better lifestyle and an eco-friendlier environment. Last but not least, as about their manufacture the city council or the school council can cooperate with organizations so as to find the appropriate amount of money for this purpose.                         Maria X A3

 An unexpected surprise

Last Friday night, while I was for a walk with my dog, I was thinking about what to write in our English blog on fast fashion. Unfortunately, I lack knowledge about that theme so I was trying to remember what our teacher was telling us about that. Then I remembered about some bins that instead of rubbish, you throw old or damaged clothes. I thought that it’d be an interesting post and I got excited out of nowhere.

Later, while me and my dog were turning back home I saw a huge red box. I go from the same route every night but that was the first time I had ever seen it. Some minutes later I realized that I passed by the bin my teacher was talking about. Then all of the sudden I rushed back to have a better look. I was right, it really was a recycling bin especially for clothes and shoes. I got more excited this time and my dog was looking at me disappointed.

After that we got back home I started looking for more information about these bins. Less than an hour later I had found more than enough information to write in my post (even though it turned out to be a whole story).

An interesting fact about the red bin is that after we throw our clothes there, people who work for that movement collect the garments and then they send them to the Recycom’s (the name of the company) storages. After that, the ones they are in good condition are sent to organizations and etc. who help people in need. The rest of them, that are in less good condition, are getting recycled.

While I was looking more and more at the company’s website I realized that there isn’t only one cloth bin in my city, but five. I was pretty surprised to be honest. It’s pretty odd for an area like ours.

But anyways, in conclusion since our city is starting to care more about recycling we should try too as long as we want a healthy planet without trash all over.                                                                                              Ari T A4

Social Media Survey

Δεκ 201817

Our class conducted a survey to find out more about the social media students use. All of the students of A’ class of our the 3rd Geniko Lykeio of Ano Liosia participated (79 students).

  • We were surprised to discover that one of us doesn’t own a smartphone! We have come to think of smartphones as essential tools for our everyday life.
  • We found out that the majority of students spends 2-4 hours on social media on a daily basis. More than a quarter of the students spend more than 6 hours every day absorbed in their social media. It seems to us that the appeal of social media for young people is intense and sometimes may lead to addiction.
  • Most of the time spent online by students is devoted to connecting with others on social networks. Students also enjoy watching films and TV series online and some of them enjoy playing online games. Few use the Internet to inform themselves about current affairs and to complete their homework.
  • About 80% of the students stated that their favourite social network is Instagram nowadays. We believe this is so because this is an app that was exclusively designed for smartphones which is the device mostly used by teens to access their social media accounts. Instagram is also a platform that provides a range of options and possibilities.
  • In the last question of this survey we asked students to answer what problems they believe can arise from the use of all these networks. We were not at all surprised to see that a lot of students believe that the daily use of social media can lead to addiction and we couldn’t agree more. The next most popular answer is personal information theft which is a very serious problem. Next, goes low marks at school and last is misunderstanding between friends.
You can see the responses to our survey here .

A Christmas cards contest and an exchange

Δεκ 20186

Merry Christmas!!!

We are a few countries who want to participate in an exchange of Christmas cards.
First step is to invite students to cooperate. Their task is to prepare handmade Christmas cards and give them in to a teacher. The teacher gathers all the cards, makes a kind of a contest, where evaluates cards and in the end gives prizes for the best Christmas card. Later on, we share the cards among the participating countries and send them by traditional post. In partner schools we have an eTwinning corner where we hang our cards so that the whole school community can see them. The cards are supposed to be in an English, Spanish, German and Russian language and at the same time  in our native language.

A.Reading Comprehension (35%)

Read this leaflet written by a group of high school students and answer the questions.

 (Text: Above & Beyond B1+, Hillside Press p. 122)

 1. Another common misconception is that bullying only occurs at school. In fact, when you’re being bullied it can feel like it’s impossible to escape. Bullying behavior can continue on the school bus, at the shops and at after-school clubs. Also, now that so many of us have internet access and smartphones, cyberbullying is on the rise. Rude or threatening emails or text messages can be sent to us at any hour of the day or night, even when we are safely at home.

2. If you aren’t the person being picked on, it’s tempting not to get involved. The victim might not be able to solve the problem on their own, and adults are often unaware of bullying because it typically goes on when they are not around. That’s why we all have to stick together and do what we can to stop bullying.

Questions:

  1. Match the headings with the appropriate paragraph. (5 points)                                                                                       a. Why is it our problem?   b. Bullying can happen anywhere.
  2. What kind of advice does the text give? (10 points)
