Easter is a spring festival. In the Christian festival, it celebrates the resurrection of Christ. In the European pre-Christian tradition, it celebrates the return of nature and greenery after the cold, snowy winter. Both the Christian and pagan versions of Easter celebrate life and rebirth. The Easter chick symbolises new life, the rabbit represents fertility and the egg symbolises both. That is why painted eggs or chocolate eggs are given as gifts at Easter.

The symbols of Easter are eggs, rabbits, chickens and spring flowers . On Easter Sunday people give coloured eggs to children and friends. Eggs come to the breakfast tables on Easter Day or are hidden about the house and garden for the children to find. This is the Easter egg hunt. Now children usually get chocolate eggs.
People have a good time with egg-rolling. They roll coloured, hard-boiled eggs down a hillock until the eggs break.
Dying the Easter eggs is one of the most important symbols of Greek Easter. People dye them on Holy Thursday – usually red but other colours are possible, too. Red eggs symbolise the blood and sacrifice of Christ. The tradition of cracking the Greek Easter eggs after ‘Christ has risen’, symbolises the resurrection from the dead and the new life. Why don’t you help your parents dye the Easter eggs this year? You will need
- 12 eggs
- 1 package red egg dye powder
- 6 cups warm water
- 1/3 of a cup vinegar
- olive oil, for shinning
