Platoni or Dama dama is a species of deer that lives in the South Aegean.
The Rhodes deer, which is a protected species, has been the symbol of the island since ancient times. Today, there is a large population of deer on the island of Rhodes. Due to the increase in their number and the destruction of its natural habitat by the devastating fires of 2023, many deer descend into residential areas and cross the road network. Due to this fact, 215 dead deer were recorded in traffic accidents in the 2021-2023.
In this project, our school’s STEM team designed a prototype using Arduino UNO and an AI camera that detects deer when they approach the road network. When this happens, LED lights are activated at the edge of the road in order to alert passing drivers to the risk of deer on the roadway. This way, drivers and animals are protected. The camera could also be used for other animals that may be near the road, such as sheep/goats, dogs and cats, which often cause traffic accidents.
The deer models were designed by our team members and printed on the school’s 3D printer.
