Gizani is an endangered endemic fish species that lives only in Rhodes. It is the only freshwater fish on the island of Rhodes and is an important indicator of the health of the ecosystem. It is small in size, reaching 10-12 centimeters. Its habitats are found in most lakes, springs and streams of the island. It is protected by Greek and European legislation.
Its main enemy is drought. It is also at risk from the degradation of the quality of the water it lives in due to the pollution of the water of streams and water bodies with urban and agricultural wastewater, and from the dangerous introduction of foreign fish species into the water systems (e.g. carp).
Our school’s STEM team designed a mechanism using Arduino UNO and includes an AI camera that detects alien fish species that threaten the gizani either by having it as prey or by polluting the waters in which it lives (especially in closed water reservoirs, such as the Eleousa fountain).
The Hydrobiological Station of Rhodes in collaboration with other agencies monitors the populations of the fish. Our mechanism, using Bluetooth and the Serial Bluetooth Terminal application, can send a message regarding the existence of alien species present at a control point.
