Schools all over Europe are celebrating a very special day on September 26, the European Day of Languages. Did you know that there are more than 200 languages spoken in Europe? That is a lot of different ways to talk, sing and share stories!

This year, our big motto is: “Languages unite!” and highlights the role of communication in building bridges. This means that even if we use different words, languages bring us closer together. They help us support each other, understand, respect and include one another in an interconnected world.

Learning a new language is like getting a key to a secret world and it is amazing because you can make friends everywhere. You can talk to children from different countries and play together. It also makes your brain strong. Every time you learn a new word, your brain gets bigger and smarter!

Every language represents a unique wealth of human knowledge. No matter what language you speak at home or at school, your voice is special. Multilingualism enriches our global community. Let’s celebrate all the beautiful languages that make our world a colourful place!

Mother’s Day is an annual celebration honouring mothers and everything they do for us throughout the year. However, it is much more than that and is not limited to celebrating only mothers.

Mother’s Day is also an opportunity to celebrate all the maternal bonds and the strong women in our lives who have influenced us and who mean everything to us. It is a day to honour grandmothers, aunts, sisters, stepmothers, teachers, caregivers and many other inspiring role models and female figures.

American Mother’s Day was established in 1908 by Anna Jarvis in West Virginia. She campaigned for a special day to celebrate mothers following the death of her own mother, Ann Reeves Jarvis, who had long wished for mothers’ work to be recognized.

Mother’s Day is celebrated on different dates each year around the world—usually due to religious traditions or national holidays that have been observed for generations. Some celebrate it on the same day as the United Kingdom, the fourth Sunday of Lent—three weeks before Easter Sunday—which usually falls in March or early April. However, different cultures and countries also celebrate Mother’s Day and have their own traditions on different dates.

International Mother’s Day is widely celebrated on the second Sunday in May by countries such as Australia, the United States, Canada, Germany, China and Japan. In the United Kingdom and around the world, Mother’s Day typically involves exchanging gifts and cards and gathering with family to mark the occasion.

Easter Day is always a Sunday and is celebrated in the spring. There are many traditions associated with Easter Sunday.

EASTER EGGS

Easter eggs symbolize new life, while chocolate eggs are the most popular tradition, with over 80 million consumed each year.

EASTER BUNNY and EASTER EGG HUNT

The Easter Bunny is a cheerful rabbit with a basket full of chocolate eggs. He hides these eggs in the garden or inside the house, and the children have to find them. On Easter Sunday morning, the children search for the eggs and have a basket to collect them during the Easter Egg Hunt.

EGG PAINTING

In England, children love to paint and decorate eggs for Easter! Eggs are the main symbol of Easter, as they represent new life and rebirth.

EGG ROLLING

A traditional game in which hard – boiled, decorated eggs are rolled down steep hills. This symbolizes the stone being rolled away from Christ’s tomb.

EASTER EGG TREE

At Easter, children and their parents put branches in a vase and hang plastic or cotton eggs from them. It is a very pretty decoration!

EASTER BONNET

At Easter, people usually wear special hats called “bonnets.” These hats are always new, as they symbolize new life and spiritual renewal. In some British elementary schools, parades are held with Easter bonnets, and the best bonnet wins a prize.

GOOD FRIDAY and HOT CROSS BUNS

Good Friday is the Friday before Easter Sunday. On this day, people eat hot cross buns. These are sweet, spiced buns that usually contain fruit and have a cross on top, symbolizing the Crucifixion.

EASTER MEAL

On Easter Sunday, people enjoy a traditional meal, usually roast lamb, with their family and friends.

SIMNEL CAKE

This is a traditional dessert, a fruit cake with marzipan. Typically, 11 marzipan balls are used to decorate the cake, symbolizing the 12 apostles, excluding Judas Iscariot.

MAYPOLE DANCING

Dancing around the maypole is another Easter tradition in Britain and other European countries. The dancers hold colorful ribbons tied to the top of a large pole and dance in specific patterns while a band plays live music.

April Fools’ Day is celebrated on April 1st. Some people believe it originated in France when the country switched from the Julian to the Gregorian calendar in 1582. With the new calendar, New Year’s Day fell on January 1^st, instead of April 1st! Those who continued to celebrate on April 1st were called “April Fools”! April Fools’ Day is celebrated in many different ways around the world and is full of funny traditions! Many famous pranks have happened on April Fools’ Day! In 1957, the BBC aired a report about Swiss farmers who grew spaghetti on trees! People were so amazed that they called the station to ask how they could grow their own spaghetti trees.

In many countries, people play friendly, harmless and simple pranks on their relatives and friends. For example, in the United States, popular pranks include fake insects or noise-making pillows! In France, children love to stick a cardboard fish on someone’s back without them noticing. This is called “Poisson d’ Avril,” which means “April Fish.” In India, many people play pranks on others and shout “April Fools!” at them. In England and Canada, people usually play pranks until noon, and if you joke after that, you’re the “fool”! In Scotland, pranks can last two days and are called “Hunt the Gowk Day,” where people send others on silly errands. Every country has exciting traditions to share, making April 1st a truly global celebration!
