On 21st December, 2017, our school advisor, Ms Marianthi Kotadaki, asked me to present creative activities that I have included in the lessons, as part of the day event entitled “Teaching English in the Technical School. Designing activities that foster learners’ motivation for all skills”.

My presentation was mainly about 3 activities, one per sector: Economics, Agriculture and Health

It was a great chance to exchange ideas with dear colleagues!

On June 25th, 2015, another interesting Day Event took place in Pyrgos, “Good Practices Dissemination”, organised by our school advisor, Ms Marianthi Kotadaki.

It was an honour to participate for the second time in such an event! My presentation was entitled “Creative Writing, Theatre and use of online tools in Senior High School”.

I met online Christina Chorianopoulou, a colleague of mine, about a year ago and she was interested in interviewing me, as part of the 30 goals challenge. To be honest, I was surprised, as I have never been interviewed about the way I teach! It was a great honour and I would like to thank her once more! Here is Christina’s article.

Theodora Papapanagiotou, who used to be my teacher of German and now is my colleague and dear friend, a highly active person in teaching, body exercise and blogging, organised a blog challenge: “How was your first time in the classroom?”

It was a pleasure to take part in such a challenge! Here is my contribution.

Presenting for the 1st time!

Today was the first time I presented my work to a large group of colleagues!

Invited to the event “Creative Teaching in the Foreign Language Classroom” by our school advisor, Ms Marianthi Kotadaki, whom I truly appreciate for her support and recognition of my work, I took part with my own presentation, called “Activities that motivate my teenage learners.” It was a prezi, which you can see here. It would be unkind not to mention my principal as well, Mr Konstantoulas, who was even willing to advise me on my prezi presentation.

Although I felt nervous, I had rehearsed several times at home and that helped me keep a good pace. Now that it’s over, I realise I’d love to do it again! It was rewarding to see colleagues I’ve never met, approach me during the break to tell me how much they enjoyed the presentation!

Hopefully, the other presenters’ and my work will inspire our colleagues to do even more creative activities in class!

I chose to become a teacher mainly because. . .

. . . I was inspired by . . . the bad teachers I had as a pupil. When a teacher was unfair, I thought: “If I become a teacher, I won’t discriminate against my pupils.” When I found the lesson boring (which was often the case), I would think of ways s/he could have made the lesson more interesting. As a teenager, I decided that I would like to become a teacher in order to improve education (the common belief of teenagers, that they can change the world..). I achieved my goal in becoming a teacher of English, but was disappointed to see that things were not that easy after all. In most Greek state schools, you keep trying to overcome obstacles: very few good colleagues, big and mixed ability classes, limited use of technology and resources and the list goes on. I have a clear conscience, though. Despite the difficulties, I always do my best in the classroom and have reached so far without being unfair to anyone. . .

Why have I called the blog “Austria”?

During my studies at the Aristotle University of Thessaloniki (English Department), I took part in the Socrates-Erasmus student exchange programme and spent my 6th semester at the Karl-Franzens-University of Graz, Austria. I had a wonderful time there and consider Austria as my second favourite country. The word “Grazsüchtig” (addicted to Graz) describes me best…Even though this is a blog about teaching foreign languages, I wanted to be reminded of the good time I spent in Austria…
