PRIMARY EDUCATION IN GREECE

The educational system in Greece is mainly characterized by its versatile character, which is ordained by the numerous laws and decrees of the Greek Ministry of Education and Religious Affairs.

Most students in Greece attend public schools of all levels, for which there are no tuition fees while, according to the Hellenic Statistical Authority, between 4 and 6.5% of the student population enrolls in private schools of all levels.(source: I Kathimerini daily newspaper- for further resources see The Greek Educational System)

Primary Schools welcome children of the age of 6. Some of these schools are termed “Experimental” or “Model” schools, as they carry out experimental education practices, and are supervised by university departments specializing in pedagogics and primary education. There are also primary schools which cater for students with physical or mental impairment, or special needs. In all three types of primary schools, students learn basic skills in a number of subjects, like Language Reading and Writing, Environmental Studies, Maths, and English. Primary Schools in Greece operate between 8:15am and 13:15pm, while the majority of those offer extra classes on Physical Education, Drama, Art, ICT and Music until 4pm.

LUNCHEON by CLAUDE MONET

lunch

The early large-scale works of Monet gave way to smaller pieces after 1870, but this work, a decorative panel entitled The Lunch, was one of the exceptions. It was exhibited in 1876 at the second Impressionist exhibition. It is possible that this work encouraged Ernest Hoschede to commission Monet to paint panels for his own estate.

The portrayal of this magnificent piece is tranquil and relaxed in its approach to everyday life. A small child (Jean Monet) sits and plays by the uncleared table in the picturesque garden. The house is partially hidden by the foliage in the garden,

The charm of the subject lies above all in the impression of spontaneity, in the simple evocation of family life, some traces of which remain. The table has not been cleared at the end of a meal. A hat, hanging on the branch of a tree, a bag and a parasol left on the bench seems to have been forgotten there. In the cool shade of the green foliage, little Jean Monet quietly plays with a few pieces of wood.

The ant and the cricket

Once there lived an ant and a grasshopper in the woods.

antAll day long the ant would work hard, collecting grains of wheat from the farmer’s field far away. She would put the grain of wheat carefully away in her cellar , and then hurry back to the field for another one. All day long she would work, without stopping or resting,  collecting the grains of wheat and storing them carefully .

The grasshopper would look at her and laugh. ‘Why do you work so hard, dear ant?’ he would say. ‘Come, rest awhile, listen to my song. Summer is here, the days are long and bright. Why waste the sunshine in work?’

grasshopperThe ant would ignore him but this would make the grasshopper laugh even louder. ‘What a silly little ant you are!’ he would call after her. ‘Come, come and dance with me! Forget about work! Enjoy the summer! Live a little!’ And the grasshopper would hop away in the woods, singing and dancing happily.

Summer faded into autumn, and autumn turned into winter. The sun was hardly seen, and the days were short and grey, the nights long and dark. It became freezing cold, and snow began to fall.

The grasshopper didn’t feel like singing any more. He was cold and hungry. He had nowhere to shelter from the snow, and nothing to eat. The forest was covered in snow, and there was no food to be had. ‘Oh what shall I do? Where shall I go?’ wondered  the grasshopper. Suddenly he remembered the ant. ‘Ah – I shall go to the ant and ask her for food and shelter!’ thought  the grasshopper, . So off he went to the ant’s house and knocked at her door. ‘Hello ant!’ he cried cheerfully. ‘Here I am, to sing for you, as I warm myself by your fire, while you get me some food from that cellar of yours!’

The ant looked at the grasshopper and said, ‘All summer long I worked hard while you made fun of me, and sang and danced. You should have thought of winter then! Find somewhere else to sing, grasshopper! There is no warmth or food for you here!’ And the ant shut the door in the grasshopper’s face.

The national symbols of England are things which are emblematic, representative or otherwise characteristic of England or English culture. Some are established, official symbols; for example, the Royal Arms of England, which has been codified in heraldry. Other symbols may not have official status, for one reason or another, but are likewise recognised at a national or international level.

Description

A traditional Greek Easter Bread (Tsoureki) recipe! Discover all the secrets behind making the fluffiest, tastiest traditional Tsoureki with this step by step, no fail recipe!

SCALE

Ingredients

  • 35g butter, from cow’s milk, at room temperature (4.7 oz.)
  • 135g milk, at room temperature (4.7 oz.)
  • 200g sugar (7 oz.)
  • 4 medium eggs, at room temperature
  • 870g bread flour (30 oz.)
  • 21g dry yeast (0.7 oz.)
  • 100g lukewarm water (3.5 0z.)
  • zest of 1 orange
  • 3g ground mastic (0.11 oz.)
  • 4g ground mahleb (0.14 oz.)
  • 1 egg and 1 tbsp water, for glazing the tsoureki
  • almond silvers for garnish

For the syrup

  • 150g sugar (3.5 oz.)
  • 150g water (3.5 oz.)

Instructions

  1. To prepare this tsoureki recipe (Greek Easter Bread), add in a bowl the lukewarm water, a pinch of sugar and yeast and stir. Wrap well with plastic wrap and set aside for about 6-7 minutes, until the yeast rises and starts bubbling. Be careful not do add hot water, as it will kill the yeast, nor cold, as it will take forever for the Greek Easter bread to rise. The water should be at the same temperature as your finger, so check it out sticking one finger in; you should feel no difference in temperature.
  2. Use a pestle or a blender to ground the masticha and mahlepi, along with a pinch of sugar and set aside. (These aromatic spices will give Greek Easter bread its distinctive taste and amazing smell. But be careful not to add any more mastic than this tsoureki recipe calls for, as it will leave a slightly bitter taste to your Greek Easter bread.)
  3. In a saucepan add the butter, sugar and milk. Place over very low heat and stir the mixture, until the butter has melted and the sugar has dissolved. The key is to melt the butter at very low heat, so that the temperature doesn’t ‘kill’ the yeast. Remove the pan from the stove and check the temperature. The mixture should be at the same temperature as your finger. If it is warmer, leave to cool down for a few minutes and check again.
  4. Pour the butter mixture in a large bowl and whisk in the eggs. Add the yeast mixture and whisk to combine.
  5. In the mixer’s bowl add the flour, the ground mastic and mahlepi, orange zest and the butter-egg-yeast mixture from step 4. Using the dough hook mix at first at low speed, until the ingredients start to combine and then mix at medium-high speed for about 15 minutes, until the dough doesn’t stick on the sides of the bowl. At this point the dough should be really soft, like seen in the picture and a little sticky. (Be careful not to add any more flour than this tsoureki recipe calls for, as the dough should be really soft and not firm).
