Take advantage of these two unexpected snow days and have fun, relax and, maybe, learn some English vocabulary related to snow!
A snow day is a day when children do not have to go to school because there is a lot of snow.
On a snow day we go out to play in the snow. We can make a snowman, have a snowball fight or make snow angels in fresh snow. We can also go sledging (= κάνω έλκηθρο)!
Before we go out to play in the snow, we have to wrap up warm (= ντύνομαι ζεστά) – put on very warm clothes: hats (= καπέλα/σκουφιά), scarves (= κασκόλ), earmuffs (= γούνινα αυτάκια), gloves (= γάντια), turtleneck woollies (= μάλλινα ζιβάγκο), leg warmers (= γκέτες), boots (= μπότες), woollen socks (= μάλλινες κάλτσες).
It can be really cold on a snow day. We can say that it is freezing cold, biting cold or bone chilling (= κάνει παγωνιά, ψοφόκρυο)!
When we go back inside, we need a hot beverage (= ζεστό ρόφημα) to warm us up, like a hot cocoa or tea.
In some places where it snows quite heavily (= χιονίζει πολύ), people can be snowed in (= μπορεί να αποκλειστούν), that is, they cannot leave the place they are, because of very heavy snowfall (= ισχυρή χιονόπτωση). Or, we may find the driveway in front of our house to be snowed up – blocked with snow (= μπλοκαρισμένος από το χιόνι).
When the snow starts to melt it is called slush (= χιόνι που λιώνει) and it can be very slippery (= γλιστράει) and ugly! So be careful!
So, have fun with snow and remember to keep warm!
