The story of the Nutcracker
In 1816, a fairy tale was written by the German author Ernst Hoffmann entitled “The Nutcracker and the Mouse King”, which was adapted by one of the most widely read French authors, Alexandre Dumas. It is a very sweet magical tale about a toy doll that is given to little Clara by her godfather Drosselmeier in a small German town. The Nutcracker, or as it is called in Russian, Stchelkunchik, was an animated little soldier who acted as a Nutcracker. Little Clara dreamed of a story with the Nutcracker as a hero and herself that Christmas Eve.
Tchaikovsky took this story and turned it into a ballet in two acts. In the first act, when the feast is over and the guests have left, Clara enters the quiet drawing room to put the Nutcracker to sleep. As the clock struck midnight, the girl fell asleep and was transported to a fairytale world. The Christmas tree magically grew, all the toys, including the Nutcracker, came to life and were thrown into battle with large mice that invaded the room. Finally the nutcracker won the battle and was transformed into a handsome prince.
In the second act, Clara and the Nutcracker prince embark on a magical journey. They pass through the Snow Queen and also through the land of the Sugarloafs with the fairy Sugary. Clara does not want to part with her Nutcracker, but on Christmas day as she wakes up near her family, all she holds in her hands is the Nutcracker, the doll her godfather had given her.
The first premiere was given on December 18, 1892 at the Mariinsky Theater in St. Petersburg, while abroad 42 years later, in London. Since then, many performances have been held every year, with several adaptations in the choreography, always in the context of the original text.
