Make light sensing a focus of your code lessons with the BBC micro:bit. A light sensor responds to the level of light, and depending on the level detected, can be used to turn lights on or off.

Light up fishing nets
Fishing nets can sometimes trap unwanted sea creatures in them. Use your micro:bit to create a prototype that can stop this. The program turns on LED lights when light levels are low as they would be in deep water.

Sunlight sensor
The LEDs on your micro:bit can work as a light sensor measuring the amount of light falling on them. The sunlight sensor project uses an ‘if… else’ statement to show a sun image only if the light sensed is greater than a certain level.

Energy light meter

This project allows you to find out how much energy you use. Your students will learn how to take readings from the micro:bit’s sensors and store them in a variable so that they can be read again, even after lighting conditions have changed.
