September 2017 – Monthly report

  • Our 6th grade pupils were introduced to the three-year KA2 Erasmus+ S.T.E.A.M. project which will be implemented by them and their teachers, throughout the school year 2017-18. They were informed of the STEAM lessons they will have, as well as the whole workshops which are to follow.
  • Furthermore, they were also informed about the mobility to Spain (April 2018) and their obligations and tasks to be completed, by then.
  • They were told to prepare the Erasmus+ corner informing all the pupils of the school of the project.

November 2017 – Monthly report

November started with the 6th grade pupils’ attempt to electronically discover the S.T.E.A.M. countries and their details. The kahoot web.2 tool was used and they really enjoyed the game. Photos can be seen underneath.

Nov’17-Pupils of the 6th grade were given the chance to learn and practice their knowledge of geography by making the STEAM countries poster and playing a MEMO game on which they memorized the STEAM countries, capitals and flags. Photos can be seen underneath.

1st T.P.M. (Transnational Project Meeting) Press Release 

 

ΥΛΟΠΟΙΗΣΗ ΕΥΡΩΠΑΪΚΟΥ ΠΡΟΓΡΑΜΜΑΤΟΣ

Στο πλαίσιο υλοποίησης του τριετούς ευρωπαϊκού προγράμματος KA2 Erasmus+/Strategic Partnerships με τίτλο:

S.T.E.A.M. Children Engineers Academy”,

αντιπροσωπεία του 6ου Δημοτικού Σχολείου Αιγάλεω, μετέβη στην Πολωνία από τις 7-9/11/2017 για την πρώτη συνάντηση των εταίρων και συμμετασχόντων στο πρόγραμμα.

Στο σχολείο του Czasław, Krakow, συναντήθηκαν εταίροι από την Ιταλία, Ισπανία, Εσθονία, Πολωνία και τη χώρα μας, προκειμένου να διευθετήσουν:

Α. τα καθήκοντα και τις αρμοδιότητες του κάθε εταίρου,

Β: να πληροφορηθούν σχετικά με τις οικονομικές και διαχειριστικές τους υποχρεώσεις και

Γ. να καθορίσουν τις κινητικότητες μαθητών κι εκπαιδευτικών που επίκεινται. Πιο συγκεκριμένα προσδιορίστηκε το ακριβές χρονοδιάγραμμα των μετακινήσεων μαθητών κι εκπαιδευτικών που θα λάβουν χώρα τα τρία επόμενα έτη.

IMPLEMENTATION OF AN Erasmus+ EUROPEAN PROGRAM

In the framework of the implementation of the three-year European program KA2 Erasmus + / Strategic Partnerships entitled:
“S.T.E.A.M. Children Engineers Academy “,
a delegation of the 6th Elementary School of Egaleo, went to Poland from 7-9/11/2017 for the first meeting of the partners and participants in the program.
At school in Czasław, Krakow, partners from Italy, Spain, Estonia, Poland and our country met in order to settle:
A. the tasks and responsibilities of each partner,
B: to be informed about their financial and management obligations and
C. to determine the mobilities of students and teachers who are affected. More specifically, the precise timetable for student and teacher travels to be carried out in the next three years was determined.

S.T.E.A.M. LESSON PLANS AND INSTRUCTIONS

The following S.T.E.A.M. instructions started in October 2017 and will be completed in 20 month lessons.

In each month one S.T.E.A.M. 90  minute-lesson will take place.

TITLE Meeting the kettle and the steam utensils

OBJECTIVES Through the lesson, pupils will be able:

 

1.     To observe what steam utensil actually are.

2.     To realize the names people in Greece use for this kind of utensils.

3.     Find out that all these utensils are based on the steam function.

4.     Search on their own for other forms of utensils that have the same function (e.g. steam iron, cauldron/central heating)

 

DESCRIPTION Pupils will be shown a Kettle, a pot and a skillet. They will touch them, recognize and speak about their use. Then they will see different images of the above utensils on the interactive board. Also, they will be asked for the names Greeks use for these steam utensils. Finally, they will compare these utensils to other ones of the same use and note down all their remarks, including the names we use in Greece. They will be assigned homework in order to find out and make a power point with all the steam uses they have found out.

 

 

EVALUATION Evaluation indicators:

 

At the end of this two-hour presentation, pupils should be able to easily recognize any kind of steam utensil. Also they should have written all the results of their observation on their note pads. Furthermore, they should be able to provide examples of similar to the kettle utensils, on a power point presentation, they will have made at home.

OBJECTIVES Through the lesson, pupils will be able:

 

1.     To learn how to correctly use the steam kettles.

2.     Understand their different way of function.

DESCRIPTION Pupils will be shown two kinds of kettles, the traditional and the electric one, as well as the skillet. Then they will watch the three videos to realize their different function. They will be assigned homework in order to find out operation manuals of kettles/skillets and present them to class.

 

 

EVALUATION Evaluation indicators:

 

At the end of this two-hour presentation, pupils should be able to easily describe the basic function difference between these two kinds of kettles/skillets. They should also learn how important is to study the operation manual, before use. They will be given empty images of the kettle parts in order to fill them in.

OBJECTIVES Through the lesson, pupils will be able:

 

1.     To notice the boiling procedure while watching the experiment of water in a kettle and a small pot.

2.     To learn that there are two scales of temperature measurement. (Celsius and Fahrenheit)

3.     To compare these two scales and see some countries that use different temperature scales.

4.     To convert a random temperature from the Celsius scale to Fahrenheit.

5.     To learn that not all liquids have got the same boiling point.

 

DESCRIPTION Pupils will be shown boiling procedure while watching the experiment of water in a kettle and a small pot.

 

Then, they will watch a video on boiling. Afterwards they will watch a second video in order to understand the molecules motion and the different boiling point of the liquids.

Furthermore they will be told about the different scale temperature measurement and watch a video of how we can convert the one scale into the other and vice versa.

Finally, they will try to convert a random Celsius temperature into the correspond Fahrenheit one, based on a mathematical equation.

 

EVALUATION At the end of this two-hour presentation, pupils should be able to  describe the boiling procedure, in details. They should also be able to recognize the boiling point in the two different temperature measurement scales. Afterwards, they should definitely be able to convert temperature from the one scale to the other. Finally, they will be assigned to find which temperature scale measurement is used in d the European countries.

OBJECTIVES Through the lesson, pupils will be able:

DESCRIPTION Pupils will be shown the Evaporation procedure while watching the experiment of water boiling in a beaker or a pot.

 

Then, they will watch a video on the Evaporation through boiling. Afterwards they will watch a second video on the natural evaporation, that takes place all over the planet, above liquid surfaces. They will talk and compare about the differences between these two kinds of evaporation and they will also discuss on the topic of the Laws of Evaporation.

Furthermore they will be shown a video on the water Cycle, referring to the natural phenomena, included in it.

EVALUATION At the end of this two-hour presentation, pupils should be able to  comprehend the Evaporation procedure. They should also know that there are two kinds of evaporation. Furthermore they should be able to describe the different stages of the Water Cycle.  Finally, they will be assigned to write down and set examples, showing the Laws of Evaporation. Apart from that, they will be asked to write in a diagram the different stages of the Water Cycle.

OBJECTIVES Through the lesson, pupils will be able:

 

1.     To review the boiling evaporation procedure. They then will watch the phenomenon of condensation and will remember the desalinization procedure.

2.     To review the two kinds of evaporation. The one that comes through boiling and the natural one that takes place above seas, lakes, rivers etc. (Natural Evaporation Laws)

3.     To learn how to avoid condensation inside the house, applying and following some practical advice.

4.     To review the change of the natural condition (water into vapor and back to water).

5.       To finally comprehend the phenomenon of condensation.

DESCRIPTION Pupils will be shown the two first review videos on the Evaporation procedure and the Condensation as well as the desalinization.

 

Then, they will be asked to execute an experiment on condensation through boiling. Afterwards, they will also execute another experiment on natural condensation. In addition, they will watch the 5th video which is the same one as the experiment, they executed. After that, they will learn about the Natural Condensation Consequences and how they affect the house and its humidity. They will also watch (3rd video) some practical ways to avoid it. Finally they will watch the 4th video, in order to remember the change of the natural condition, in relation to the energy increase (liquid to vapor) and the energy decrease (vapor to liquid). EVALUATION At the end of this two-hour presentation, pupils should be able to  comprehend all the procedures so far:

They should also know that the natural condensation plays an important role in the humidity of the house and they should follow some steps in order to decrease it, in their own houses.

OBJECTIVES Through the lesson, pupils will be able:

 

1.     To compare the water boiling time between a beaker and a kettle, by watching the above video and running an experiment in class.

2.     To find out that there is a difference in the final water temperature between the water boiled in the beaker and the one in the kettle.

3.     To learn how to calculate the Energy Efficiency of both the beaker and the kettle.

4.     To learn how much energy (Joules) is needed for 1kg of water to raise its temperature by 1 degree Celsius.

5.     To learn to compare the amount of Useful Energy and the Energy supplied.

6.       Finally, to learn how to solve the Energy Efficiency equation for every boiling utensil.

DESCRIPTION Pupils will be shown a video in order to compare the water boiling time between a beaker and a kettle. They will also find out the difference in the final water temperature between the water boiled in the beaker and the one in the kettle immediately after the boiling point. They will be given a data table, so as to note down their remarks along with the experiment. After the end of the experiment they will see the Energy needed for the water to boil in these two different utensils. They will have to calculate the amount of useful energy and the energy supplied in both cases, concurrently realizing the Energy losses. Finally, they must understand that the quotation of this division can never be above 100% because if something like this happened, our planet wouldn’t have an energy problem.

 

At the end of the lesson, there is going to be a discussion on the importance of using Low Energy Efficiency Utensils.

EVALUATION At the end of this two-hour presentation, pupils should be able to

 

·        Solve the Energy Efficiency Equation

·        Comprehend that the more quantity of a liquid to be boiled demands more time, more temperature and of course more amount of Energy.  Evaporation through boiling

OBJECTIVES Through the lesson, pupils will:

 

1.     Pupils will select their teams and every team will select “their chief” for the Treasure Hunt game.

2.     They will then be informed of the obligations and the duties of each team member.

3.     They will collaboratively work in teams using the tablets, in order to take part in the treasure hunt game.

4.     They will follow commands-steps in order to run the recipe.

5.     They will “read” the QR codes using their tablets for the recipe running and finally share it on their Google Keep profile.

6.     They will apply the instructions-comments of the recipe.

7.     They will hear a recorded Google Keep command and apply it.

8.     They will make the sweets working in a collaborative way.

9.     They will take photos and store them on their Google Keep profiles, where they will be also visible by the Collaborator-Instructor.

 

DESCRIPTION Pupils will select their teams, which is something that will prepare them for a collaborative cooperation. Then will also select their chief and be informed of the Treasure Hunt. They will “play” the Treasure Hunt using their tablets (Mobile Learning) and QR codes, in order to find the hidden ingredients for making a recipe. Through a game playing and an enjoyable way, they will try to solve the QR code riddles and find the recipe ingredients. Using their tablets and ICT will read the riddles hidden in the QR codes.

 

Following specific commands and instructions, they will work in teams and be taught in a game playing way, using at the same time technology, the basic fundamentals of the algorithms and the programming (Computational Thinking). Furthermore, they will use the Google Keep app and “upload” photos so there will be a direct feedback between the teacher and the pupils themselves

EVALUATION Evaluation indicators:

 

At the end of this two-hour lessons teaching procedure, pupils will have comprehended the collaboration procedure through a PC (Computer Supported Collaborative Learning), and will participate in the Treasure Hunt game through Mobile Learning, following particular steps and achieving in this way their introduction into the meaning of the algorithms.

They will also have comprehended the basic fundamentals of the  rule programming and will have their first aspect of the basic commands/instructions of repetition and choice. They will have been acquainted with the QR codes technology and will simultaneously learn the Google Keep and Google Docs applications. Pupils will have worked in teams, using their mobile devices in a funny and innovative way discovering the Mobile Learning, in the context of CSCL (Computer Supported Collaborative Learning) which has been proven to offer multiple benefits to the teaching procedure, both at a cognitive level and at a collaboration quality level, among the pupils.

Finally, pupils will have collaboratively worked in a funny and innovative way.

2.     They will create a presentation on the Google Docs, using key words of the basic programming commands, seen on the interactive board.

3.     Every team will prepare the presentation they made during the third lesson.

4.     They will be assessed by the Kahoot application using their tablets.

 

DESCRIPTION During the third lesson pupils will be at the ICT lab and using the PCs, will create a Google Slide presentation, including the steps-commands of the recipe they made. Simultaneously, they will use particular key words seen on the interactive board, such as (if..then…otherwise…for so many times….begin….end…).

 

They will once more use the tablets to upload and insert photos in their presentations, taken by themselves during the recipe running.

 

EVALUATION Evaluation indicators:

 

At the end of the third lesson pupils will have comprehended the meaning of the algorithms and the basic fundamentals that rule programming. They will know programming key-words, like begin/end, as well as choice commands: if/then/else and repetition ones like while or for. They will have learnt the Google Keep and Google Docs applications. They will experience that technologies such as the above ones, communicate and will see the utility of such communication.

At the end of this four-hour lesson (the one before and this one), pupils will also have comprehended the basic fundamentals of the rule programming and will have their first aspect of the basic commands/instructions of repetition and choice.

They will have been acquainted with the QR codes technology and will simultaneously learn the Google Keep and Google Docs applications.

European project “S.T.E.A.M. – Children Engineers Academy “

1st Transnational Learning Activity in Spain

 

In the context of the implementation of the European Erasmus + KA2 Strategic Partnerships program entitled “S.T.E.A.M. Children Engineers Academy “, a delegation of the 6th Primary School of Egaleo, consisting of three teachers and four students of the 6th grade, went to Colegio Jaby, SL in Torrejon De Ardoz, Spain for the first Learning Teaching Training Activity of all partners and participants in the program .

The students of our school attended the Spanish school on a daily basis and participated in workshops that involved the implementation of the above program.

An important activity took place in the central square of the city with the participation of all students of the Spanish College and students from all countries in the presence of Local Authorities. Actions, related to S (Science) T (Technology) E (Engineering) A (Art) and M (Mathematics) were presented.

In time after school, they were given the opportunity to take a guided tour of the city with all the school children.

They were also given the opportunity – after parents’ initiative to host students – to visit the Real Madrid Bernabeu Stadium.

They also visited one of Spain’s oldest and most historic cities, Alcala De Henares, the birthplace of Miguel Cervantes, author of Don Quixote, as well as Patones De Arriba, a village that remained free throughout Frankish occupation.

Finally, they found themselves in Madrid where they travelled to the most important monuments of the city.

The visit was completed with a presentation of the first six activities of the 1st year that our students had prepared in Greece. The results were creative. It is worth noting that our students have distinguished themselves for their ability to communicate in foreign languages ​​and their ethos.

OBJECTIVES Through the lesson, pupils will be able:

DESCRIPTION Pupils will be shown a fairy tale in the English language, entitled “The Magic Kettle” on the interactive board while simultaneously will be listening to its narration. Afterwards a pupil will repeat and narrate the same fairy tale in Greek. Finally, pupils will have to answer comprehension questions based on the fairy tale, in their working sheets. Then, they will be given several teapot images and they will be asked to paint and decorate them in their favorite pattern.

 

Afterwards, they will be given tablets on which – working in teams- will also paint teapots using downloaded a special on painting application.

 

EVALUATION At the end of this two-hour lesson, pupils should be able to:

 

·        Realize that Art has been inspired by the teapot over the years.

·        Teapots have been decorated or painted by artists

·        Fairy tales have included teapot and become very successful.

STEAM Skype teleconference between the Italian and the Greek school

In the context of the celebration of the Erasmus+ day in Italy, a skype teleconference took place between our STEAM partner school in Monterotondo, Italy and ours (6th Primary School) in Egaleo, on the 12th of October’2018. It was nice to see pupils and teachers focused on the completion of our project. We would very much like to thank Italy for this initiative!!

Afterwards, they will be asked about the answers they gave and their different perspectives. There will be a transformation of their answers in real life (parents and children). The fairy tale will be given to them in Greek, so they will be asked to draw and color it, depicting the fairy tale on their drawing papers. Then they will solve an electronic  puzzle on the interactive board.

DESCRIPTION Over these two lessons, an introduction to the concept of programming takes place, and then pupils, helped by their teacher, simulate themselves a robot which receives orders for the preparation of a simple recipe.

 

They are then given explanations and instructions on how to play Lightbot. In Lightbot there is also the concept of Procedures and more detailed explanations are given by the teacher as this concept is a bit more complicated for primary school pupils.

EVALUATION Evaluation indicators:

 

Pupils divided into groups will enter the computers of the computer lab to play the “Minecraft” game, on the www.hourofcode.com, which actually requires these commands to be used. There will be an ICT teacher observing and supporting the whole process. Finally, students will respond on a Kahoot quiz!

1.     Locate the basic elements of a map (title, memorandum, scale and orientation)

2.     Recognize what the map scale is and mention its importance.

3.     Compare the map scales of two different maps.

4.     Estimate and calculate the real distance between two points on the map, at a straight line, based on the map scale.

5.       Collaborate in teams in order to solve problems/Verbally communicate talking about the results of their tasks

DESCRIPTION 1st Activity

 

Pupils divided into teams search different maps in order to find out if every map contains all elements necessary and fill their findings in their worksheets.

2nd Activity

All pupils are asked to work on the google map, focusing on the map of Greece. Pupils will find out that the more focus we have on a small area the most scale length increases. Pupils fill in their findings in their worksheets.

 

 

3rd Activity

Afterwards, a group of pupils will work on the geography book map, another group will do the same on the Greek wall map and the last one on their Geography school map book (ATLAS). Pupils will find out that the denominator of the scale fraction increases/decreases according to the kind of the map.

4th Activity

Pupils notice that the map scale is written in two different ways, as follows:

Scale=1: 250.000

Scale= 1/1.200.000

 

5th Activity

Pupils calculate real distances using their rulers on their geography maps. They write down the distance in centimeters then convert into meters and then into kilometers, according to the following equation:

In the same activity, pupils will be given the real distance between two cities and they will have to find how it is depicted on the map, solving the same equation, and converting kms into meters, centimeters etc.

March 2019

In the context of S.T.E.A.M. project on the 17/03/2019, the Szkola Podstawowa im. M. Kopernika w Czaslawiu, Poland and the 6th Primary School of Egaleo, Athens ,Greece) had a SKYPE teleconference and both schools pupils had the chance to play a kahoot game on their tablets. The game was based on St Patrick and his life. Both school pupils enjoyed it and the Greek ones learned a lot about a Saint who is not known in Greece. We would like to thank the Polish school pupils for their participation and the nice song and dance they did for us!!!!

DESCRIPTION During the course, pupils will be given a problematic situation to find a solution and implement it. The problem-situation is the high temperature and the solution of creating a fan. Step by step students, divided into groups of two or three, will create a fan with Lego Blocks and then with the help of tablets will try to program commands in order to turn the fan on. Then they will test changes in the fan power while they incorporate a sensor that will command a start or pause depending on whether it detects motion or not.

At the end of this two-hour course pupils will have faced and resolved a problematic situation with the help of technology, IT and robotics.

They will experience the concept of wind energy and some forms of use.

They will install a sensor and create artificial objects so that when the sensor detects them to respond by sending a message. Then they will experience changes in robot speed and response to the new findings according to the instructor’s instructions.

  1. Pupils participated in a Treasure Hunt game. Separated in teams, used their tablets/mobile phones in order to „read“ the QR codes and their secret messages. Following the instructions, they used kitchen utensils in order to prepare truffles. The whole procedure included Coding/Algorithm/Basic Technology terms.
  2. Pupils assembled the teapot robots for next day, following the LegoWedo Edu8 instructions

Wednesday,the 13th of November, 2019.

Steam pupils programmed their teapot-robots to serve tea to the attendees along with the truffles, they made the previous day. Hot water was prepared by them in special thermo containers in order to perform their presentation. University Professors and students from the I.C.T. University of Athens /Mayor/Education Authorities/National Agency Authorities attended the event.

STEAM – ENGINEERING/18th century ENGINEERING ACHIEVEMENTS

ALL DAY OUTING

All pupils travelled to Kalavryta. They had the chance to see a miraculous achievement of the 19th century (the Cog railway train). They then travelled to the Corinth Canal which is regarded as one of the most spectacular engineering constructions of the 19th century.
