LESSON PLAN: ‘Ready for Action-Recycling’

*Recommending an alternative to  unit 5 of the E’ class coursebook entitled ‘Ready for action’ which is thematically related to the Environment (cross-curricular link: Environmental Studies).

PRE-LISTENING STAGE (5-10 min):

The teacher

– activates Ls’ content schemata by pointing to the recycling logo and asking questions, e.g. Do you know this item? What is this for? in order to familiarize Ls with this item telling them that it is environmentally friendly and is used to mark/label objects or materials that can be recycled (that is, reused)

– pre-teaches new vocabulary related to the topic of recycling attracting Ls attention by showing them relevant flash cards / pictures (e.g. rubbish, recycling bins, etc) , realia, that is objects made of recycled material (e.g. a carton of milk, a glass bottle, a can of cola, etc) and objects labeled with the recycling logo (e.g. notebooks, bags, etc.)

– writes the key vocabulary on the blackboard (e.g. recycling, rubbish, litter, bins, reuse, reduce, project, environment, save, protect, etc).

WHILE-LISTENING STAGE (5 min):

Ls listen to the CD (twice) and take notes on a piece of paper working with a partner (pairwork). The teacher monitors their work telling them to note down the central idea, the key words and the main points of the dialogue they hear.

POST-LISTENING STAGE (30 min):

A) GAP FILLING ACTIVITY-PAIRWORK

Ls work in pairs and fill in the gaps choosing the suitable word from the box.

B) LISTENING PROJECT-GROUPWORK

Ls are asked to form three groups

–  each group is assigned a different topic related to recycling

1st group: How to recycle at home

2nd group: How to recycle at school

3rd group: Why recycling is important

– group members carry out different tasks on behalf of their group (that is work allocation, e.g.  note making, constructing the dialogue, acting out the dialogue)

–  each group produces a dialogue to be acted out in the classroom

–  two representatives of each group act out the dialogue on behalf of their group

– each group makes notes re-structuring what they hear from other groups

– a plenary discussion follows engaging all Ls of all three groups to consolidate the acquired new language/vocabulary and knowledge on recycling further.

HOMEWORK ASSIGNMENT

As a follow-up activity, there would be a homework assignment asking Ls to work again in their groups to produce a brochure, a leaflet or a poster relevant to their previous task on recycling. Ls are also provided with a list of useful websites and sources related to the key word ‘recycling’ to get further support and relevant information by exploring and exploiting internet at home:
