Τον Δεκέμβριο του 2009 ο Sting αποτέλεσε το θέμα ενός ωριαίου ντοκιμαντέρ του BBC που αφιερωνόταν στο πρότζεκτ του με τον τίτλο Winter Song. Κατά την διάρκεια του ντοκιμαντέρ μίλησε για το υπόβαθρο του τραγουδιού που όπως είπε ήταν ένα τραγούδι ικεσίας, ένα πολύ παλιό Αγγλικό τραγούδι που είχε τις ρίζες του στο εθιμοτυπικό του ψησίματος soul cakes. Αυτά τα έφτιαχνα για να «ταΐσουν» τους νεκρούς στο Halloween με την ελπίδα ότι αυτή η κίνηση θα κατεύναζε την πείνας τους μέχρι την επόμενη χρονιά. Και , όπως είναι φυσικό, οι νεκροί δεν είχαν και πολλή όρεξη οι φτωχοί και οι πεινασμένοι πήραν την ιδέα να ικετεύσουν εκ μέρους αυτών.
