Christmas in England
Christmas in England
In England, families celebrate Christmas together, so they can watch each other open their presents.
Most families decorate a Christmas tree in their house. They use holly, ivy and mistletoe to decorate their homes or other buildings.
They also decorate their city with Christmas lights. A famous person usually switches them on in November. The most famous Christmas lights in the UK are in Oxford Street in London. Every year they get bigger and better.
In England the traditional Christmas dinner, eaten at midday, is roast turkey with vegetables and sauces. For dessert it is rich, fruity Christmas pudding with brandy sauce. Mince pies, pastry cases filled with a mixture of chopped dried fruit.
Father Christmas delivers presents to the children during the night before Christmas. The children leave an empty stocking or pillowcase hanging at the end of the bed. In the morning they hope it will be full of presents.
Carol singing, or Caroling, is singing carols in the streets or public places. It is one of the oldest customs in Great Britain, going back to the Middle Ages when beggars wandered the streets singing holiday songs seeking food, money or drink. People today still go carol singing from house to house to collect money for Charity.
The book “A Christmas Carol” was written by Charles Dickens. It is the tale of a miser called Ebeneezer Scrooge who is visited by four ghosts (Jacob Marley, The Ghost of Christmas Past, The Ghost of Christmas Present and the Ghost of Christmas Future). He was made to see the error of his ways and became a reformed character.
The day after Christmas is called Boxing Day because boys used to go round collecting money in clay boxes. When the boxes were full, they broke them open.
Bullying
Bullying is the activity of repeated aggressive behaviour intended to hurt another person physically, mentally or emotionally. Bullies want to gain power over another person.
The victim must stand up for himself or herself. The best way to deal with such a situation is to walk away, hang out with others and tell an adult.
Bystanders should be involved and help the victim. Bullying must stop. Treat the others with respect and kindness.
STOP BULLYING!
