April Fool’s Day In Artistic Lies

Σχετική εικόνα

This quote by Pablo Picaso is a perfect match to the Day!

Celebrate the annual tradition of April Fools’ Day in a completely different way. Instead of playing practical jokes on each other, explore how “lies” and deception can create art, op art! Op art is short for ‘optical art’. The word optical is used to describe things that relate to how we see. Op art works like an optical Illusion. Artists use shapes, colours and patterns in special ways to create images that look as if they are moving, curving or blurring. When looking at Op art, our brain is deceived into believing a complete lie! The Op art movement was inspired by advances in computing, aerospace, and television in the 60’s.

Find a selection of Op art worksheets below to get creative and talk about shapes, lines and the feelings you receive. A list of descriptive words to critique art may come handy!

Browsing around for new school year first day ideas, I came upon some activities that would be interesting to try out. I also found some classroom posters that are really cool. So here they are:

1] TeamExercises is a youtube channel full of team games that can be used throughout the school year. You can absolutely find a game to start the day!

2] A first day lesson proposal that uses poetry and can match all levels.

3] Just a reminder for Categories, the classic vocabulary game that most students love playing and can be adapted to match a first day by asking for classroom objects or school subjects or school routine verbs!

4] Free download colourful icebreakers along with suggestions on how to use them.

5] 10 Motivational Posters for Your Classroom to brighten up the space and also generate discussion about classroom rules and moods!

6] Finally, an article on how to be kind to ESL learners!

If crafting sounds as a more appealing first day activity, here’s an older entry with some ideas: last-minute-new-school-year-crafts

Two Poems About Rain

P5041960 -A

Rain In Summer

How beautiful is the rain!
After the dust and heat,
In the broad and fiery street,
In the narrow lane,
How beautiful is the rain!
How it clatters along the roofs
Like the tramp of hoofs!
How it gushes and struggles out
From the throat of the overflowing spout!
Across the window-pane
It pours and pours;
And swift and wide,
With a muddy tide,
Like a river down the gutter roars
The rain, the welcome rain!

Henry Wadsworth Longfellow (1807-1882)

April Rain Song

Let the rain kiss you.
Let the rain beat upon your head with silver liquid drops.
Let the rain sing you a lullaby.
The rain makes still pools on the sidewalk.
The rain makes running pools in the gutter.
The rain plays a little sleep-song on our roof at night –
And I love the rain.

Langston Hughes (1902-1967)

Read the poems. List all the verbs that the poets use for the rain. Describe the images of the rain in each poem. Are there any similes in the poems? Compare the two poems: how are they similar/different? What feelings do you get from them?

You can copy these poems on a template or write your own and create some art. Get inspired!

Model Holiday Postcard and Worksheet for Elementary EFL Students-Υπόδειγμα Κάρτας Διακοπών και Φύλλο Εργασίας για την Ε Δημοτικού

postcard phrases worksheet

Working in Primary Education last year gave me the chance to create various worksheets which I’d like to share in the hope they will help more students and teachers out there.

The worksheet I developed is based on the Coursebook that Greek students follow in Grade E. There is a model postcard text providing a few phrase choices and a lined space where students can write their own postcard.

I hope you’ll find the Model Holiday Postcard and Worksheet to be as useful a resource as I did!  If this is the case, please share the link back to my site rather than give the document away. Happy postcard writing!

Merry Christmas With Mr Bean-Lesson Plan and Worksheet

Are you looking for a fun way to introduce some seasonal vocabulary, customs and activities to spend this year’s last school day? Well, how about watching a Mr Bean episode with your class? That’s what I did last year with my Grade 6 pupils and it was great success because it seems they are never bored with Mr Bean. Moreover, they were really motivated to do the worksheet activities since they all enjoyed the story.

Weekly Progress Report In EFL-Εβδομαδιαία Ενημέρωση Προόδου Για EFL

my-weekly-progress-report

Here’s a weekly-progress-report template I created and used with both students and parents last year. This template was especially designed for students with problematic performance, because I needed to record and monitor the student’s specific tactics and behaviour in every class. I didn’t want to just tick on ready-made progress reports, but rather describe the exact performance.

End of School Year Activity-Δραστηριότητα για το τέλος της σχολικής χρονιάς

kitties patternhappy pattern
Simple, Free Image and File Hosting at MediaFire
There are so many creative people out there and I’m thankful that I am able to reach their work and ideas, especially when these are kindly offered and can really inspire me and  my work! Such is the case with  patternsforcolouring (the first two pictures) and doodle-art-alley  (the third picture belongs to this site), where amazing colouring pages can be spotted. All you need to do is choose a pattern you like, download it, print it out and start colouring. The colouring pages in  patternsforcolouring are offered under a Creative Commons licence (CC BY-NC-SA 2.0 UK).

I particularly like these sites, because there are artistic colouring pages, like the ones above, that can generate writing activities.  I am thinking of using the “kitties” one as a prompt for a cartoon-like dialogue among the kitties, after the pupils colour, cut and stick their figures on a seperate sheet of paper. I will ask my pupils to write summer themed dialogues and this is going to be a cute activity for the last days of this school year.

I can do something similar with the “Happy” one. The children can assort their colouring with sentence completion:

In summer I am happy because…

Summer makes me happy because…

In summer there are a lot of happy moments. I like…I usually…

As for the underwater scene, it is a game itself since it belongs in the Blopper category, where the colouring pages hide irrelevant figures. When the students have spotted them, they can simply label them or even create a story according to their level.

Great! I have new activities for this year’s last class! What are you planning to do?
