Our Carnival Time Weird Habits-Activity with Grade E

100_1579 100_1582

This is a simple, fun activity to do with pupils which came up to me thanks to my students’… annoyance at common homework!

There was a textbook assignment reading “Write about what you do during each day of the week”  which was dully received by my Grade E pupils. Then someone asked: “Should we write absolutely true facts about us?” Just then it struck me and I challenged them: “Not at all. In fact you should write absolutely untrue, weird things about your habits. Whoever writes anything sensible will get punished!” Why not, I thought, it’s carnival time!

That was it! Beautiful, funny, imaginative sentences were handed in the next day, which I had a great time checking! They definitely deserved extra recognition and display, so I thought of designing some “canvas”, have my pupils actually draw their favourite weird habit and then bind everything into a nice booklet. The whole activity took place on the last Friday before Monday of Lent holiday and it so much suited the festive carnival spirit. The final outcome entertained the whole class so greatly that they suggested handing their  booklet around the school for everyone to read.

You can find the canvas together with the booklet cover below (click on the pdf image). I designed two different covers; one for a carnival time activity (wait until the next year) and a neutral one which can be easily incorporated in lessons anytime. If you happen to like this activity, please remember to say a good word about this site!

The Zoo – Craft with the 1st Grade

100_1531100_1537

Moving on with the animal vocabulary learning, the 1st Grade pupils prepared their zoo animals, which they then placed in the zoo. There was some discussion about what the zoo should be like, so they proposed the layout and the areas it should include.

Ofcourse, there should be a tree for the monkeys, lots of grass for the elephants and zebras and a pond for the hippos. Great concern arised with the birds, because they should be kept in a cage, “otherwise they will fly away, miss!”

With that in mind, I started browsing the internet for some easy cage craft ideas and frankly, I found so many brilliant ones! I was thrilled with this particular one -as well as the full site itself- at dltk-kids.com  because it looked so nice, easy and neat. That’s how it proved to be!

Apart from the activities suggested in the curriculum, we also learned simple animal related action verbs like “run, eat, sleep, fly, swim, etc”, which we used to play Simon Says and charades. Enjoy the zoo crafts the A1 and A2 classes have made!

Pets Mini Book – Craft with 1st Grade

100_1488bl

Pets is one of the very first English vocabulary sets introduced to the 1st-graders here in Greece. Naming and coloring our pets and then hanging them on the classroom walls seemed to me meager, so I thought a mini book of pets would be a nice activity for the little ones. The motive was my wish to let my pupils create something they could connect to, use over and over, take home and show off and keep it as one of their first souvenirs from the English class.

100_1490bl

First, we learned the names of the six pets. Then the pupils colored them on a relevant worksheet. The next step was cutting and sticking the pets on the book sheets, which I collected and did some homework (!) with, by cutting the sheets into even pages and stapling them together.

Because I wasn’t able to find the mini book, that matched our pet vocabulary, on the internet for free, I designed it on my own. It was really a challenge! Arranging everything appropriately, so that the pages can be printed on both sides correctly, was like a puzzle,  but I really liked the adventure and so did the pupils. They couldn’t wait to take it home!

Since the pupils can’t read yet, I inserted a small picture of each pet on the right bottom of every page, as a guide for the pupils to stick their pets on the correct page, but I also added the word itself to encourage some silent reading skills. I also added numbers on the pages (1-6), so this came out handy, because we learned and practised the numbers as well.

You can see us in action below playing: “Show me the fish/the cat/etc” ,” what’s on page 1/2/3/etc” and miming. We can even use this mini book later on to “feed” our pets with new food vocabulary!

Make your Bingo Game Cards Reusable

reusable Bingo sheet

Bingo game is a fun activity that can be used to practise language bits ranging from beginners to advanced for all playful ages. It is also useful for large classes because it makes students focus and activate their auditory and visual senses, thus enhancing learning.

However, one  problem that usually arises is having to photocopy different Bingo Sheets for large classes. It is such waste of paper and time to produce a nice let’s say animal vocabulary template and use it just once, since the students are going to mark their answers or draw on their cards.

Christmas Lesson Plan with Grade E / Χριστουγεννιάτικο Σχέδιο Μαθήματος με την Πέμπτη Τάξη

roll paper wish-houses

Being motivated by the wonderful crafts site krokotak.com , (which I presented in an earlier article here), I came up with a two-days lesson plan that included various activities, culminating in the construction of these roll paper wish-houses.

The aim of the lessons was to create a relaxed Christmas mood, where the language skills would be practiced effortlessly and where pupils could demonstrate other skills like imagination, designing and crafting. The theme of the lessons was Christmas Wishes and some useful ideas and printables follow. Here’s the plan:

Marvellous Christmas Crafts for Kids

Once in a while an amazing site pops up when you didn’t really expect it, and makes you feel you have discovered a jewel! This is the case with krokotak.com from Bulgaria. The ideas are endless, cute and educational, published under a CC license  (CC BY-NC-SA 3.0)

I can’t really choose what to make with my pupils at school!

I loved, loved, loved these cute toilet paper roll reindeer and these toilet paper roll houses to which we can easily attach a ribbon to hang on our christmas tree. Not only are they easy to make, but their low cost and upcycling nature create a beautiful craft with an environmental message.

Let's make a house from toilet paper rolls

I also spotted these season themed paper doll crafts which are ideally easy and appealing for my Grade A pupils.

Christmas-themed paper dolls

I can already listen to us singing “Rudolph”, “Oh, little town of Bethlehem” and “Frosty, the Snowman” as we will be making our crafts.

There are also FOLD AND CUT printables, paper toys and so much more!

Thank you neighbours and Merry Christmas!
