Is Your Relationship With Technology A Bad Romance?
Ajit Johnson, a Ph.D. student working in cancer genetics and genomics uses art posters to comment on “the invasion of tech addiction without even being aware of it”. He has created a series of “some minimal posters describing our present generation and tech addiction”. Read more about it at boredpanda.com and discuss his posters.
What is the message in every poster? Which do you like best? In which poster do you recognise yourself? How well does Ajit Johnson depict the issue of tech addiction?

Happy or not, the new school year is starting soon and all kinds of tips and advice on how to prepare best for it swarm in mind. From back-to-school essentials to organizational skills or strengthening of social life all contribute to a hopeful and exciting school year.
The following USNews article, 3-Back-To-School-Resolutions-for-High-School-Students by Alexandra Pannoni focuses on just three essential resolutions that can prompt speculation and discussion in the EFL classroom during the first days. Read the article and find out what these resolutions are. Then use the extra links to formulate a wider view on the issues involved so you can state your personal opinion.
The whole activity could also generate various writing tasks like opinion essays or a collaborative table of Best Tips For A Successful School Year.

Train Your Students To Be Responsible And Safe On Line With These Google Lesson Plans
If you are preoccupied with digital citizenship and safety and how to train your students to be smart and responsible on line, then the Google Digital Literacy and Citizenship Curriculum lesson plans will be of great help. These lesson plans have been created in collaboration with child safety experts at iKeepSafe, and educators, too. They provide advice and tips so that students will be able to think critically and evaluate online sources, understand how to protect themselves from online threats, and be good digital citizens.
Poster Prompt for Teenagers About Digital Responsibility
This poster is so capturing! It’s not just the message, but its clever illustration as well, which generate ideas for the teenager ESL/EFL classroom.
So here are a few suggestions on how to use it. Students can
- EXPLAIN what the poster is about
- DESCRIBE any personal experiences, their thoughts and practice when it comes to social networks
- CREATE/COMPLETE a list of action verbs related to social networks
- WRITE questions to survey their classmates’ habits in connection to social networks
- TRANSFORM the prompts into full sentences of advice using relevant structures (should/shouldn’t/had better/etc)
- MAKE a new poster with ideas on how to react to online malice (could be used in a bullying themed lesson)
The creator of this poster, Shannon of technologyrocksseriously.com, has also made it into a page of bookmarks so they can be easily shared with the students! Isn’t it a nice idea? You can find them here.
Aid Spatial Intelligence In Your Class: Make A Digital Collage
I came across this resourceful article about creating digital collages in the classroom at technokids.com and I thought how beautifully this idea can promote spatial intelligence, one of the neglected intelligences as we move up towards higher school grades. If we wish to implement Gardner’s theory in our classroom and enhance the opportunities for our students’ competences, creative ways of teaching and learning should be tried.
So, next time there is a project, consider suggesting a digital collage, too.

Visual Webpage Search Engine/Μηχανή Αναζήτησης με Οπτικά Αποτελέσματα
“A picture is worth a thousand words” may have been the idea behind oolone , the visual website search engine, that results into web previews instead of text. Inspecting the actual image of a site before selecting it, makes searching easier and more effective.

Where Can I Find Free Public Domain Images?
Either creating worksheets, constructing games, enriching presentations or writing in blogs teachers and students need to use images for their projects.Today there are numerous public domain image galleries online that offer royalty free digital pictures. Here are some which I have often found handy when I need free copyright images for educational purposes. I cite them in two categories:
A for more general interest images and B for education oriented ones.
A. general interest image galleries
- Office Microsoft gallery is always my starting point but if I don’t manage to spot what I am looking for, I know there are other resources too.
- Pixabay Photographs and clip art of great variety. Be careful though: the first row images are sponsored images and these are not free. Only the images on Pixabay -the second row onwards- are free and bound to Creative Commons Deed CC0
- Public Domain Pictures.net is a repository for free public domain images. Some photos do require a model or property release if they are meant for commercial use
- 4freephotos I like the architecture and textures categories. Be careful again: the last row images are sponsored images from Shutterstock.com and these are not free.
- Wikimedia Commons – nearly 19 million freely usable media files(sounds and videos too), although some media files require the owner to be cited
- Public domain images Not copyrighted, no rights reserved
- Public domain photos free photos and clip art images
- picdrome.com a Public Domain digital photography collection, free of copyright and licensed under Creative Commons CC0 1.0 Public Domain Dedication.
- clker.com The online royalty free public domain clip art
- morguefile.com Check the free photos archive
B. education oriented image galleries
- Pics4Learning A rich gallery specifically oriented towards teachers and students
- Teachersfiles.com free educational clip art for teachers among other resources

- Classroomclipart.com a Source for Free Clipart, Clip Art Pictures and Illustrations. Images in the Classroom Clipart collection may be used for Personal Use and also for Educational Use by Students, Teachers, Parents in print, multimedia, and video productions. Uses include school projects, web pages, newsletters, bulletin boards, posters and presentations. When using the full size of the image or the thumbnail size of an image on a web site, a link must appear near the image.
IMPORTANT
Although most of the above sites do not require a link back to their home page, there are some which do, so always check the site for appropriate attribution, if any is needed. In any case a reference to any source site would be nice.
Be aware that pictures featuring products should be used with care.
Attribute CC Photos Properly
According to a survey that foter.com conducted the vast majority of Creative Commons photos are not attributed at all, while a very small portion of the photos that do credit the original work are attributed properly. Because of this, the following infographic was created showing the research findings, details of Creative Commons licenses and guidelines on how to properly attribute CC photos.
