This is an idea for an Easter-themed lesson that combines language and computer skills, but mostly fun. The tasks that the students are asked to complete are both practical and intellectual in the form of a competition.

First they have to make a bunny napkin folding but find out how to do it on their own (by using the internet), second they have to put the written directions of what they did in order, and third solve a crossward puzzle. The teacher can set a prize for the wining team (I thought of little chocolate bunnies that the winners can gallantly share with everyone else!)

BEFORE THE CLASS

  • Ask your students to bring a square fabric napkin and some fine ribbon or plain string
  • The students can be seperated in groups of 4-5 in advance so that time is saved
  • The teacher prepares sets of cards with the instructions for the bunny napkin folding without any numbers

ON THE CLASS DAY

  • Have the students sit in groups in front of at least one computer
  • Brainstorm vocabulary relating to “Easter” and write it on the board
  • Present them with the bunny napkin and ask them what they see, where it is used, if they know how to do it etc
  • Explain the parts of the competition
  • Let the competition begin. Every time a group completes a task they present it to the teacher so they can move to the next one.

NOTES

  • The teacher is invited to modify the number/level of the tasks involved in this competition according to their students’ efficiency.
  • There are numerous videos and images on the internet displaying the stages of the bunny napkin folding. The students are not indicated with a specific resource but are let free to decide on their strategy.
  • Some suggestions for video and image instructions can be found in a previous article here
  • Suggestions for a variety of Easter puzzles can be found here
