Are you looking for a fun way to introduce some seasonal vocabulary, customs and activities to spend this year’s last school day? Well, how about watching a Mr Bean episode with your class? That’s what I did last year with my Grade 6 pupils and it was great success because it seems they are never bored with Mr Bean. Moreover, they were really motivated to do the worksheet activities since they all enjoyed the story.

Below you can find the steps I followed and the links to the relevant video and worksheet. This is a 50 minutes lesson aimed for efl students and teachers.
- Ask the pupils what customs they like to follow during the Christmas Holiday and if they know of similar customs in the English-speaking countries. Elicit relevant vocabulary.
- Introduce worksheet-1 of seasonal vocabulary like presents, Christmas tree, wreath, carols, reindeer, etc. You can make a nice spaghetti worksheet with the vocabulary you prefer here . (This website -toolsforeducators.com- provides you with free vocabulary exercises, vocabulary worksheet templates with images, and printable picture dictionary for language classes that you can make and print online for free.) Alternatively, you can use crossword puzzles or word search worksheets which you can create online. Some site suggestions are: teach-nology.com puzzle-maker.com edupics.com worksheets.theteacherscorner.net
- Tell the pupils that they are going to watch Mr Bean prepare for Christmas and elicit some speculations on what he does. Then hand out worksheet-2 (you can find it below) and explain that exercise 1 should be done as they watch, while exercise 2 should be done after they have watched the episode.
- Play the episode “Merry Christmas, Mr Bean” which you can find here .
- Do the exercises.
- For follow-up activities you can have the pupils label and colour the pictures or assign them with the task to write the story of what they watched according to their level.
NOTE: you can easily adapt this lesson plan to a higher level by asking the students to produce more complicated language like:
“Mr Bean bought a gold ball after he had played with the Nativity figures”
